New user 89 Burlington, Vermont | Subject: Burlington Area Triathletes Hello Everyone! This Vermont thread seems to be awfully quiet. I have been doing triathlons for about three years now and have been getting more and more competitive each year. You cant beat the awesome people you meet and all the fun on race day. Let alone the sense of accomplishment and the feeling of being more healthy from training and racing. I grew up in Glens Falls NY where they have the Adirondack Triathlon Club. In the Burlington area the only club I have been able to find is the Green Mountain Multisport club which has expensive dues and seems almost elitist about new members joining. I did not get a warm feeling from their website about being able to join, especially if you need to be referred by someone. The Adirondack Tri Club has minimal yearly dues and is open to athletes of all experience and skill levels. I would be interested in either starting or joining a club along those lines up here in Vermont. Even if it is not established as a so called "club" I would love to meet up and train with fellow triathletes. I believe it would be a great way to stay motivated and get the most from workouts. If anyone has similar feelings please post here or send a PM. As we head in the to offseason I plan on having a lazy few weeks with occasional workouts but then would like to hit the training hard. I look forward to talking with you!! |

Pro 3804 Seacoast, NH! | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes I actually grew up in the Champlain Islands/South Burlington. I never did get into tris until after college, but a few of my friends do them back home. I honestly didn't even know about that club you speak of. I will ask them if they know of another one. Unfortunately they are an ER doctor and a surgeon, both in residency, so they don't have ideal training hours right now. If you head down to the ski rack, they may have some info. for you. I know some of the people in there are not as friendly, but you're apt to find someone to give you a hand. OR! Move to the seacoast of NH. We are more friendly! haha! |

Master 1460 Burlington, Vermont | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes Hello! I just created my account here today and was happy to see some Vermont specific conversations. I volunteered for the National Age Group champs in August and the bug bit me hard. I'd love to get in shape for that final Oly at Lake Dunmore in early August and hopefully qualify for the Nationals, seeing as we're hosting again, but I fear that the Nationals will already be full by the time that Lake Dunmore Oly has occurred. best Andrew I'm in Essex. I usually do a long ride on Sunday mornings. You're more than welcome to come along. What is your current fitness level? Have you ridden on the roads much? What has your long ride mileage been like? |

Member 35 Davidson , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes Hey thanks for the offer, I am embarrassed to say I just saw the response now. I did have a grew ride with another newbie on such a beautiful day. Hard not to gaze at the beautiful landscapes. As far as my ability.. boy I really don't know how or what the correct biking terms are. I bike 2-3 times a week depending on my schedule and the weather last weeks rain i only got out once. this weeks sun I am looking to get out 3-4 times with 2 long rides 40+ my avg speeds cadence heart rate etc well my computer was left at my folks house over the holiday so I still waiting for the mail. I am also still trying to figure out my Garmin and really get it to start working for me. I would like to think I am in good shape ran a half about a month ago with a 7:30 avg pace. I feel in better shape now and would hope to do better I really just stared training a month ago on a "this could be challenging" and now I am finding the three sports craze! Running is my background. I am a beginner biker maybe 10 rides and 3 months swimming. Any tips Any gear you might be selling Basically any advice to a newbie I am all ears.
Thanks again Andrew |

Master 1793 Essex Jct, VT | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes As far as tips, I would just say ride lots, mostly hard, and then ride some more. There are some amazing roads around here that are good for cycling. Good luck. |

Master 1793 Essex Jct, VT | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes I will be at Colchester for a few friends that are racing and have done Lake Dunmore a few times. In fact my daughter, she's 8, just finished her first tri there last month. Did you race there this past weekend? I'm doing Challenge Maine at the end of August and IMLou in October. I will probably be doing more local stuff next year. |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes Nice! I'm doing Colchester and probably Dunmore in August (Oly?), then Big George on Labor Day. I'd love to hear how Maine goes for you - thinking about that one for next year. It reads pretty flat (by our standards) and I'll be curious if that holds true. |

Master 1793 Essex Jct, VT | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes I did Lake George last year. The bike is rolling and quite fast. The run course last year was horrendous. It was a 4 loop course that felt like it was constantly going up. I did hear the run course changed for this year. Hopefully it will be a bit better for you. I just finished up with HITS half in Hague, NY. Talk about climbing. Holy Moly there was a lot of climbing on that course. |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes Nice on The Hague race!!! I did Little George last year and we had the same run - just 2 loops. It was awful, I felt so bad for you guys!! I'm going to do the ride soon to get a lay of the land. I did hear the run has changed back to 2 out and backs on the bike path. |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes I've ridden it a couple of times last year, but not this year. I just went to Fit Werx for an updated fitting, new saddle, and new shoes so this will be sort of a trial race for me with the new setup. I've been training more for HIM distances so not nearly the speed work I'd need to be competitive, but it will be fun and good transition practice. Do you ever swim at Indian Brook in Essex? |

Master 1793 Essex Jct, VT | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes Quite often actually. A group of us get together and swim at 6am on Mondays. I was swimming with a group that meets at 5am on Fridays. The loop that they do is 30 minutes long and they usually do 3 loops. So a group leaves at 5, 5:30, and 6. I am in and out with them. I prefer to do more speedwork in the pool on fridays, so that one is a bit sporadic for me. How bout you? Also if you are looking for a great team to swim with, our masters program at williston is fantastic with an amazing coach. She has transformed my swimming, and she primarily writes my swimming workouts all year long. Let me know if you want to come and meet the group. We swim at the edge on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:45-7am. |

We swim at the edge on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:45-7am. I think I talked with her this past winter! She seems great! She was trying to convince me to join. I have a tough time with early mid-week, husband travels and I have fairly young kids to leave alone at that hour. I would probably have to do the midday group unless my husband was around that week. I will definitely look into this fall if not sooner. I'd love to tweak my form, I know I have more to give. I'm planning to swim Friday at IB but probably not until about 8:00 (hoping my friend doesn't bag). I would absolutely love to go more - I just don't know anyone to swim with and hesitate to swim on my own. Are you with GMM - I think that's one of the groups that goes there. I've never just jumped in with a group as I don't know how they'd feel about it. I had a nice swim at Essex Monday - about 3,800 yards and a s/b/r combo yesterday, run today, going to b/r the Colchester course tomorrow morning early. |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes I also just realized you're the same person I chatted with about the Stowe triathlon. How did that go? Unfortunately there was no way I could make it this year but I will put it on my radar for next year. |

Master 1793 Essex Jct, VT | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes Stowe was great. We had gorgeous weather. It definitely is not your typical tri, but it's a great one because it is early in the season and it kicks off the racing season really nicely. I am not familiar with GMM. I hear that the afternoon group at The Edge is great as well. Even if you hook up with Kim for some private lessons, I'm sure that you would get some great benefit from it. Like I said, she writes my workouts all year long (really affordable btw) and I try to get with her once or twice a year privately to tweak things. Getting close to Colchester!!! |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes Just rode and ran the course this morning then came home for another 3 mile run. I think that's brilliant - maybe I'll go back and talk with Kim. I feel like I've plateaued on speed. I can go forever but clearly my technique needs some fine tuning (and I'm only okay at bilateral breathing). I'm trying to focus on reach and roll and building obliques. I think I let my head ride a bit high too sometimes. Anyway, great idea, I'll have see what I can work out with her. Thanks! |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Burlington Area Triathletes I will give my 100% that this Sunday will allow! I've had a knee injury I've been working through so I'm trying to manage my expectations on the run in terms of speed. Focus will be technique/form on swim, cadence on bike and transitions. The run will be what it will be. But I will crush it as best I can! Swimming tomorrow at IB at about 7:00 with a couple of friends. Are your friends ready to crush it?! |
