who grows 'em? I'm thinking about it, but I tried about 2 years ago and I suck at growing a beard. Maybe this year will be different? If it sucks it's coming off, but that's if I decide to try it. Do girls dig beards? Oh, I'm talking big burly lumberjack beards, none of that perfectly shaped metrosexual prissypants beards, well except for down the neck, I'm trying to look like Coy Detmer.

I'm growing one now. I stopped shaving Thursday. It's almost time to go to the beard ranch.

Give me two more weeks and I'll look like Forrest Gump again.

Here's what I looked like at the end of marathon season last year.

Oh my goodness- your beard is huge!  I don't dig beards all that much- unless you save my some grumbs for when I get hungry   But goaties are kinda cool.   Having a "soul patch" is the best if you ask me!

I have to agree, a full bushy beard is probably the worst thing a guy could do! haha. I dont mind the scruff it can look sexy if kept up, and a nicely trimmed goatie. Now mustaches, those should be banned!

How can you be advocating goatees over beards?!?! I would so have a handlebar mustache if certain regulations didn't forbid them.

I thought of growing a beard when I retired so I stopped shaving.  That lasted all of 3 days ...  I looked like an old wino.  So I shaved and now I look like a clean shaven old retired guy!

I've went with a crew cut (#1 on the sides, #2 on the top, faded together), and it's just BEGGING for a beard to go with it. I mean, just BEGGING.

The only problem is now, at 32 w/ two young kids, there's some "blond" (hey, if I say they're blond, then darnit, they're blond) hairs in my dark brown beard.

My wife has always denied my request to grow a beard. This year, she's not getting asked. *Man sounds*

I started growing mine in 1987.  I keep threatening to shave it just to scare the kids.  It doesn't look very triathlon-ish, but, then again, neither does the rest of me.

A third string QB?! Don't you want to look like Faris al-Sultan?

I've been growing mine for the past two weeks. I plan on shaving after the holidays when I get back in the pool. Nothing like seeing your relative's shock when you show up to dinner looking like a cave man.

Not happening here. There's a 1"x2" patch on my left jaw that's just barren. It looks pretty sad when I try.

I haven't had a soul patch for a few years, since I cut all my hair off. I may have to try one again.

I think it is the Cherokee way back in my family history, but I can't grow a lot of facial hair to save my life. I really only have to shave every three to five days not to look lightly scruffy, and that's more to not pi$$ my wife off!

Makes it easy for leg shaving though! Only have to do that every two weeks or so to keep it decent.

That's why ya gotta go to the beard ranch.  Days 3-9 are totally unappealing.

I keep a neetly trimmed goatie all year long... I am fixin to shave my mellon though. My hairline seems to be "advancing in a new direction" and I cant handle that any more. 8-) I think I will keep the beard though.

I'm pretty sure that I've already pointed out that only weirdos do the whole goatee and shaved head thing.

I resemble that remark! Although my goatee is pretty weak compared to yours. And I don't know about you, but I shave the head out of necessity.

basic rule of thumb for facial hair is: the cooler you think it is (and you're male), the LESS chicks will dig it.

i had a friend years ago who could grow facial hair like crazy. and so he did. Wyatt Earp? done. funky muttonchops? done. A "funk patch" I was always just itching to WIPE OFF HIS FACE? Oh, yeah. He'd switch it around as the mood suited him. Funny thing, this guy was crazy unbelievably naturally handsome. I mean, dip-him-in-mud-and-hang-him-upside-down-and-he-still-looks-great handsome. So every now and then he'd go clean shaven for some event or other and MAN, he was all that and didn't even know it. too busy planning his next adventure in facial hair.

the one exception to the general rule is the goatee. looks good on many guys. a neatly trimmed beard looks good on some; women differ as to whether they want to deal with kissing it though.

ALL THAT BEING SAID, find a decent woman who likes you for who you are and she'd pro'ly rather see you with your beard than freezing your face off on the bike all winter. Okay maybe I'm biased b/c of tri, but I TOTALLY sympathize with anyone growing a beard for that reason.

I shaved mine out of boredom, but it does accentuate any receding hairline you might have when you let it grow out for a week or so.  I've told people for years that I was getting my dad's hairline, and people either didn't believe me or just lied to me.  They believe me now.

Oh, and I think my goatee looks a little bigger because I'm smiling.

Started one last week, but shaved it off when I determined that I was going to have to buy a new electric razor to trim the thing. My last one died while trying to shave my chest, legs I mean face.....
