Subject: Need Gas Grill Help...

Okay, so there is something peculiar going on with my gas grill.  I went out there tonight to light it to grill my chicken like I've done a thousand times.  Turned on the gas, used the electric ignition (LOVE that feature), heard the left burner light.  Turned up the middle burner to high, heard IT light.  Shut the lid and went back inside.  I usually only use the left and middle burners because they provide AMPLE flame to grill for one person.  Anyway, I forgot about it and went out there 15 minutes later and despite both those burners being on HIGH, the grill temp was half of what it normally is.  When I open the lid, the middle burner doesn't appear to be on anymore.  Hmmm...strange.  I took all the grates and burner covers off and after playing around with it for awhile (yup, I played with fire) I made the following observations:

1.  If you turn on JUST the left burner, it appears to go on HIGH normally.

2.  If you turn on ANYTHING else other than the left burner (including the side burner to the right of the main grill area) none of them seem to get enough gas.  The middle one will stay lit, but barely and the flame on the left burner goes down.  Also, the right burner will only light intermittantly and never stay on for any period of time.

Uh...help?  Any gas grill experts out there?

Well thats usually how it works. We can do the complicated things, but stupid things like grills, changing high light bulbs, and putting gas in cars is why men are useful.

The tank is really new.

How does a burner get clogged and how do you check this?

Obviously I will wait until the grill cools.  Actually, I'll have to wait for daylight.

How did I know the fireman would reply when I said I was playing with fire?

slight hijack... my hubby forgot to turn it off one night and the neighbor came over banging on our door, "Your house is on fire!!"  flames were shooting up and damn near missed the attic, we'd be screwed.   Bless that neighbor.

yep, it could be clogged with grease.  check the connections and the tubes...

As the tank gets lower on gas they start to lose pressuer too. I usually use those same symptoms to know its time for a refill.

Very seriously, the tank is like a month old.  The last one lasted me at least 3....do you think I got a bum tank?

Could be low on propane (do you have a way to check? either weight or a stick-on guage).

Could be a bum regulator (that is the saucer-like thing usually pretty close to where the hose attaches to the tank. These are usually problem free, so I wouldn't think it too likely.)

Could have a clogged line. Spiders are notorious for nesting inside the lines (particularly when they haven't been used for a while). Check the venturies (the openings in the tube on the back side of the control valve).

That WOULD save me the trouble of having them move it to SD...but I was rather fond of it and would prefer not to ditch it JUST yet...

Um...where's the control valve?

The funny thing is, I assembled the grill myself...from all it's little pieces, so you'd THINK I'd know the answer to this...but no.

Okay, Max (Lara's hubby) talked me through taking the burners off.  They didn't LOOK clogged up but I banged some rusty buildup off of them (c'mon, the grill hadn't been cleaned in the YEAR I'd been here) and now all three burners light nicely.  So sometime this week I'm going to thoroughly clean the grill and reassemble...

Whew...glad it was simple.  SO weird that it went from FINE one day to all clogged up the next...

Control valve is that knob you turn to adjust the flame.

Hey Jen,

You might have a stuck high flow regulator.  Here are some instructions from the Weber Gas Grill site an how to reset the high flow regulator.

My LP gas grill won't get hotter than 250 to 300 F, even with all burners on high. Why?

Since 1995, all regulators (the part that attaches to the gas tank to regulate the flow of gas) have included a safety device that restricts the gas flow in the event of a gas leak. But, you can inadvertently activate the safety device without having a gas leak. This typically occurs if you open the LP tank valve rapidly, or if one or more of the burner control knobs is in an open position when opening the LP tank valve. If you do activate the gas regulator safety device, the grill will only reach temperatures between 250 and 300F even with all burners on the high setting. To reset the gas regulator safety device:

Close the LP tank valve.
Turn all burner control knobs to the OFF position.
Disconnect the regulator from the LP tank.
Open the lid of the grill.
Turn burner control knobs to HIGH.
Wait at least 1 minute.
Turn burner control knobs OFF.
Wait at least five minutes if the barbecue has been lit.
Re-connect the regulator to the LP tank.
SLOWLY turn the LP tank valve all the way open.
With the lid open, turn the front burner control knob to the HIGH position (for Summit gas grills, turn on the left burner in the selected Heat Zone).
Ignite the grill by pushing the crossover ignition button several times.
After the front burner is lit, turn the middle burner control knob (if your barbecue has three burners) and then the rear burner control knob to the HIGH position. (For Summit gas grills, turn on the right burner)
Close the barbecue lid.

The barbecue should reach 500 to 550 degrees in 10 - 15 minutes.

To keep the regulator flow valve from tripping again, when you are done grilling always:
Turn all burner control knobs to the OFF position
Turn off the LP tank valve last

This happens to me ALL the time.  And I've got a brand-stankin new spensive grill, not under heavy use, so the grease clog and rot theories are out.  New tank of propane, so that theory is out.  All I can guess is that either something (like condensation) gets in the line, and takes a minute to work itself out once lit, or something weird with the pressure from the tank...in either case...

I usually end up lighting my grill, letting it burn at lower temp for a minute, turning it off, then re-lighting.  It fires up nicely the 2nd time, full heat.  Dunno why, but that seems to work.

Wow...didn't know the cause, but the solution i was using wasn't far off.  Thanks TG...

Oh, I'll try that too. Because I think I recall messing up the order of turning shiz on last night before I went to use it...I could have turned on the tank after turning on the burners...
