Subject: New Kindle need book ideas

We are traveling and I'm having surgery and need some book ideas. I am getting a new Kindle Fire.

After surgery I probably need something light. I'll be on crutches 6 weeks no weight bearing then 2-3 weeks partial weight bearing....I will have a lot of time.

Book suggestions? Why you like the book?

I'm a Sci-Fi reader but I also like human condition stuff so

Spider Robinson, Callahan's Crosstime Saloon is a series that makes me literally laugh out loud every time. Mostly short stories so it's good for short attention span stuff as well.

Replay
Ken Grimwood

That one's just a rather interesting "what if..." kinda book

The Stainless Steel Rat by Harry Harrison
Whole series. Mindless action stuff but funny.

Incarnations of Immortality Series
Piers Anthony

An interesting take on the whole afterlife idea with science and magic mixed in with Gaea, Mars, Thanatos, etc.

I love the Janet Evonvich books but think I have read them all...perfect light reading.

I need to find another author like her to read a whole series. I can read a book a day easily when not training.

Very cool!

I have downloaded Sherlock Holmes onto Kevin's kindle so I can share it. My Dad used to read it to us at night when we were 8-13 at the cabin. It was always better when power was out and he read by Oil lamp. I want to read Hound of the Baskervilles again and to my kids.

I'm re-reading a lot of the stuff I read for my first 6 weeks on bed rest...I don't remember them as well as I thought I did :D

I read more when I AM training, since I read on the ET and on the trainer, and that can be up to 3+ hours a day, so I've plowed through a lot in thelast 24 months.

Some of the standouts:

Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series is good. (mystery of a sort)

Just read Ex heroes and am reading Ex Patriots--superheros v. zombies

Kim Harrison's The Hollows series and the kate Daniels Series (if you like paranormalfiction)

John Sandford's Prey series--there's like 20 of them, so it takes a couple weeks to get to them all.

The Dresden Files (by Jim Butcher)--a combo of John sandford and Kim Harrison

Any Neil Gaiman--I've read most of his stuff at least 1-2 times. American Gods is WONDERFUL.

Hi.  While on holidays my wife and I read a few of James Patterson's books on the "Women's Murder Club".  There are about 10 books in the series and they are a fast read.

You may (or may not) enjoy any of Kathy Reichs books - her books were the inspiration for "Bones" on TV.

Hope you heal fast.

Lots of great ideas...keep them coming.

I know I can read a couple chapters before I decide to buy them with Kindle.

I'm a huge Stephen King and his latest (11/22/63) has an intriguing premise and 850 pages (hardcover) worth of time killling. Got me through the ten hours yesterday that Mrs. bear spent in the surgery center yesterday. I'm over halfway through it and it is been a good read so far.

If you like "urban fantasy"...I have about 15 series titles I can give you. :D I also tend to read series books, b/c I treat each book like a chapter, and usually go through a book a day or so.

DO you have any specific other genres or authors you've liked?

I'm really enjoying the George Martin "A Song of Fire and Ice" series (of Game of Thrones on HBO fame). I'm on the second book now.

Grisham has a new book.  There's one day.

I still have not made it through Triathletes Bible.  Is that in electronic form?

Chariots of Fire.

I am sure that you have read Born to Run.  I enjoyed it, but I'm not actually sure what it was.

For light reading I like

Stephanie Plumb series

John Sandford books

Historical novels

Clan of Cave Bear series

The Immigrants Series, not John Jake one, immigrants from Scandinavia to Minnesota not US author, from the 70s

Like cop stories & mystery& complicated but not overly so

I liked early Stephen King books

Don't really like science fiction

Like stories about oppressed people and how they cope..liked Roots when it came out

Oprahs reading books I'm about 50/50 if I like them

I read fast so something with tons of details I tend to skip a lot and miss out details unless very interested in it

I read a lot in summers in Minnesota. My mom saves books she read for the year and I just pick one up start it and if I like it keep reading, if not pick up another book. My sister also recommends book but she reads more high brow stuff with her book club.

A few light(ish) reads that have been raved about lately at the library:

- The Night Circus by Morgenstern
- The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Skloot
- The Help by Stockett
- Unbroken by Hillenbrand
- Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Riggs
- Sarah's Key by Rosnay

And a Kindle Single memoir I want to read about a drug-addled, alcoholic turned ultrarunner, which is called The Long Run by Shubaly.

Have you done the whole Scarpetta series from Patricia Cornwell?

What about Dean Koontz? Or James Patterson- his books are super quick reads.

There's also the Harry Bosch series from Michael Connelly, similar to John Sanford.

The Cornwells books I read when new ones came out but haven't read them for some years. They were great.

Yeats - I think you and I have the same tastes. Here are some I have read recently in my book club and enjoyed:

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
Sarah's Key
Still Alice (tho' being someone turning 50 next month, this made me a bit anxious)
Island Beneath the Sea (Isabel Allende - historical novel about Haiti)
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
The Help
Room
REALLY good, but not in Kindle I don't think - The Power of One - Bryce Courteny (an older book, he's a great author)

I also enjoyed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, and I like to re-read The Poisonwood Bible every now and then, as well as the Iliad and the Odyssey.

and one of my all time favorites, which is a good chunky read, is 100 Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez

I'm gonna stalk your thread because I am looking for some new books, too.
