Ok wasn't really sure what you were asking there. I've never heard of or seen any issues with dogs in the area, Mt. Pleasant has some strict leash/dog at large ordinances but I don't ride too often in that area.

I ride there quite a bit and haven't had a problem. Particularly for a triathlon, when there will be so many bikers out there, you won't be alone or in danger.

On Sewee Road/Doar Road, which are on the half bike route, is where I do most of my long rides. It is a residential area and I do see dogs from time to time. They have even come toward me and barked, but never anything more than that. In other words, it never got dangerous or scary.

The sprint route is really mostly along the highway and back toward the airport - really no residential areas and no dogs unless it is someone out walking a dog.

That's just my limited experience, but I hope it helps you make the decision!

Thanks for the input guys! I am highly considering the half. My husband is active duty Army at Fort Stewart and I was all set to do the Florida 70.3 in May, but we just found out he has to go to Louisiana and play war games for a month in May. A half iron is a race I'd rather have a sherpa for, so I am looking for a half iron to do in April and this one seems perfect, I am just concerned about being mauled a a vicious dog. Unfortunately because of what happened last year, this is criteria #1 for me.

It's kinda funny funny you mention dogs because there there are very few on the course. Most of the course is through gator filled swamps. Wild dogs and pet dogs don't last long in that environment. I have done the race twice and didn't see a single dog..

l did this sprint 2 years ago. l remember Hwy 17 being filled with potholes and very bumpy. l could not even get comfortable in aerobars for fear of potholes. We never got off the highway though. Have they resurfaced it? l know they were doing it in Mt Pleasant but wondering about outside of town.

How are the back roads? l want to do this half, but do not want to bump around for 56 miles.

Thanks! Not seeing a single dog two years in a row is what I love to hear! Now I am about 95% sure I am going to do this race. I have done sprints with set up events and I know they put on some great races. I am so intrigued to try a Non M-Dot half Iron distance.

That was Steed Creek/Halfway Creek Rd (see page 1 of this thread). Maybe I should plan a little recon-ride this weekend and report back on road conditions!

I have set the Half distance as my target event for this year. I am new to Triathlons and this will be my second event. My first was an Oly.

Any advise specific to this event you have for me will be appreciated.

Thank you.

l am doing Charlie Post 15K this weekend and plan to drive the course and see how it is. When l raced two years ago, l did Sprint and Hwy 17 was horrible. l will report back as well.

stjohn2912 - 2012-04-04 12:31 AM For those of you who have raced this 1/2 course before, are there changing tents available at T1 and T2? If not, any suggestions for those of us who might be a little more modest? I don't want to wear my bike shorts under my wetsuit, wet soggy bike shorts make for a miserable 56 mile ride but is the only other alternative changing from the swimsuit to the bike shorts via the birthday suit by the bike rack? And the same question for T2, changing from the bike shorts to running shorts, is there an alternative other than the birthday suit in the middle? I wouldn't think port-a-johns would be too conducive to changing. In all the pictures I've seen of the race, I didn't ever remember seeing changing tents, maybe I just missed them. Any suggestions?

There are not changing tents.  And regardless of your level of modesty, it is against the rules to strip down in the transition area (or anywhere else on the course...).  If you absolutely have to change, you could use a port-a-potty.

But:  you really should invest in a pair of triathlon shorts.  You can swim, bike, and run in the them.  They are comfy.  They dry out quickly after the swim.  They really are the way to go for racing.

Good luck in the race.

On a side note, how is the lake temp down there?

Not that it matters to me but, For the Love of All that is Holy, Please let it be Wetsuit Legal !!

Hi

I have been a member for a while but not very active on BT. After a long break, beginning to get back into triathlons. I have signed up for the TrySprint Chalreston and also planning to the Lake Murray. I have done Lake Murray once before but never done the race in Charleston so looking forward to it.

Also a big thanks for all the helpful contributions and tips by you folks. Hope to be able to the same.

Also wondering what the water temp is these days?  Does anyone know?

Also....yes or no for a wetsuit for the Sprint?   Starting to try mine out this week....worth it in a Sprint or not.  Wondering in general, won't know my 100 yard time difference to figure out if it makes time sense.  Basically, wondering what % of the participants where them in a Sprint.  I would hate to decide to wear one and be the only one wearing one!!

I'd say that depends on the swimmer. How much time you will save in the swim wearing a suit compared to how long it takes to get out of it.

I would say 95%+ of the half participants wear wet suits and 75% of the sprint people wear wet suits. I would definitely wear it for the sprint if you have one and the temp allows.

I did the sprint last year without a wetsuit.  I had a horrible swim, even by my standards, but that wasn't due to the lack of a wetsuit.  Probably more than half of the sprint participants had suits, but I don't think it was an overwhelming majority.  Definitely an overwhelming majority of the half participants wore wetsuits.

I signed up for the sprint again this afternoon.
