April 20, 2013....mark your calendars.  I have a half 3 weeks prior but going to try and do that race and this race.  Had a blast doing the sprint this year.

Wow, you are on the ball! I am in for the sprint.

Are you going to do the sprint, too, since you have that half scheduled right before?

The website wasn't updated the last time I checked....assuming a sprint and a half.  I just found out about the date through twitter.

I'm in for the half this year. it will be my 1st half ever. Looking forward to a fast flat course. Last year I did the sprint and was very jealous.

Less than 2 weeks away. Hopefully the weather will be nice. I had to drop from the 1/2 to the sprint partially due to a shoulder injury while skiing. On the bright side I should be easily done by 10:00 am and have plenty of time to enjoy Charleston.

I am in for the half, any idea what the pond's water temp will be? What has it been in the past?

In the past it has been 65-68. Right at wetsuit legal. I'm not sure about this year but they usually let us know a couple of days beforehand.

I just drove by this morning and wondered whether the pond was as cold as it still looks.

It's bound to be colder than last year, just because of the weather we have had lately. I have heard that they don't post the temps until 36 hours prior to the race.

Hm, to rent or not to rent, that is the question :-)

Checking the temperature  now would be fairly pointless. The shallow water inland lakes warm up very quickly after a few sunny days. The only debate to me about a wet suit is if the time saving is enough to justify the time in removing the suit. If it is wetsuit legal, I will use one. At 500 meters it is a wash. If I was renting?  Tough call

Thanks - I can definitely handle that for the sprint.

I think it was 68-ish last year, wasn't it? And I did it without a wetsuit. I had the impression that around half, maybe a little less, of the sprint participants went without the wetsuit last year.

I love your blog - you'll do great! It sounds like your training has gone really well.

By the way, I was riding on Highway 17 today, on the way back down towards Mount Pleasant from Awendaw, and there are some huge cracks in the road there. They are only a few inches wide, but very deep - like 6 to 8 inches deep - and parallel to the direction of travel. Just keep an eye open out there - they aren't hard to see, and with any luck, the weather will be just like today.

In the past the organisers have done a good job filling the cracks and potholes with asphalt patch just prior to the race. They also paint some of them if they look bad and can't be repaired. The expansion cracks are different and you really need to be careful on them. They grab tires and slam dunk the riders. Only 7 days left.

I cracked my top tube on my P2 and it is out of commission. Looks like I will be riding my vintage Duel unless I can find a 61cm frame very quickly

Thanks melanfi.  I have been working really hard to get in shape.  To think it was two years ago that I couldnt ride the rides at Disney b/c I was too big...

I will keep my eyes open for those road canyons. I DO NOT want my first time going down to be in a race!

That's too bad! Sorry to hear it.

It's a relief to hear that the race organizers are good about checking out road conditions beforehand.

Now let's hope that the sun shines on that lake for a few days before the race! Only the top 3 feet has to get warmed up, right? ;-)
