Bike: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/99200693

Of course there are always fluctuations between everyone's devices.  Cornick's seem low to me - especially on the run.  I just looked back at my overall elevations (gain) for the race and got this with my Garmin 405:

Ride: 3,691 ft

Run: 781 ft

They could be low or high.  I've got no idea...I've never done that race.  Those are links simply from mapmyrun and mapmyride.

I just like to use those sites to get an idea of what they might be like.

Bike

Run

MapMyRide doesn't really capture everything very well. My Garmin actually came in rather low for the bike. Generally you'll find more like 4,000-4,200 ft. For the run, note the uneven sections of the big uphill. The grade changes are a killer, so be ready for them.

My powermeter battery died about 5 min into the race. HR never worked right for the bike or run.

None of the uphills really struck me as being that steep when riding (they looked worse when in the car). If you get some low end gearing and figure you'll be riding longer because of the overall volume it'll be ok. That means go a touch easier than on a flatter course. Also, do not push the effort up the hills unless you are a stronger rider with experience in terrain with lots of hills. You're going uphill so often that it's likely best to forget about using that to push slightly harder on them. That run course is no joke. You'll want to save something for it. A bit more than normal, actually.

For the people that did this race in the past did you feel like you could carry your momentum from the downhills to the uphills?

I don't have an issue gaining speed on the downhills being my size and I'd like to be able to carry that best as possible into the uphill.

Cornick, Running is my weakest discipline so you will have a different view. In a few instances I could carry over some momentum from down to up hills while in some of the rolling sections out back. However, most I could not. The start is a very fast and steady downhill but a very gradual loss of elevation. Then you take a right onto the dirt road from hell. The hills are simply too steep and break you down. It's one after another. I've heard that some of the pro's are seen shuffling through them. Don't know if it's true but it makes me feel better. If you can get down to do the warm up ride a few weeks earlier try to run a shortened loop after that includes much of the hills. It helped me a lot. I'm sure the discussion of the pre race ride and dates will begin soon. Happy training.

Cornick, carrying momentum is kind of yes & no. Some will go right up into a hill, others will go off into a flattish area. I don't recall too much that would have a turn or at the bottom that would kill all speed, though there is some where you'll have to slow down. On the bigger ones, however, this is of limited value due to their overall size. There is only so far momentum will take you up a (near) 5 mile hill. Look at it more as carrying momentum through situations.

As mentioned, some run practice would be helpful if one can get out there. Around the lake is the harder parts, so doing that loop would be good. If the whole lake loop seems kind of big at the time, then skip the out & back. The loop has more of the harder things on it anyway, though there is nowhere that the course fully lets up.

To get ready for this, run on lots of hills. Whatever you have available. Not necessarily hill repeats, but just run on them. The overall volume is tough, but what makes it harder is that it's constantly changing direction or grade. You never get into a rhythm as something comes up seemingly within 100 yds everywhere. Really learn how to use RPE on this as pacing by other methods will be very difficult. HR is not responsive enough to be highly dependable. Pace is, but will be changing constantly on the hills and you have to know how to adjust for the grade very, very well on this.

Running. If you didn't scout the course, this is how you'll know the big hill is coming.

Its like this every year.  Quassy is the top draw for the Rev3 pros.  Its a whopping purse this year at $100,000.  This brings everyone out.

hmmmm

I think the swim elevation is more like this:

                                                                                                          -----------------------------------

                                                                  --------------------------------

                                    ------------------------

                 ---------------

        -------

-----

but I could be remembering it wrong, it may have just seemed like it was uphill...

The swim actually is flat, but you do have to run uphill to get out of the water and all the way to transition.

Noticed that Starykowicz is on the pro list this year. Could make things rather interesting for the men. The depth on the women's side is crazy.

Just signed up for the Half Rev.  I live 2 hours away (according to google map).  Would it be silly to think about driving there on race morning?

Possibly - bike check in is on Saturday. That's a lot of driving back and forth.

I'm staying at a state run campground.  $27/night...can't beat that.

I'm in, again.

It was a tough choice but I decided on Quassy for the third year. Last year I did 'The Revolution' though I pulled out of the 70.3 run a mile in due to foot issues, which was just the start of all the injury issues that plagued me last summer. Though this year I'm back and injury free *knock on wood*.

This year the race is on the calendar as an A race instead of just a tune up so here's to killing it.

As for where I'm staying.. I'll probably do the same thing I've done the last two years, wait until a week before the race and just pick the cheapest place within half an hour of the site. Last year I ended up in Danbury which is only 20ish min away. Though camping out in the parking lot seems a good alternative.

when I did it last year, I drove in from South Windsor CT-about an hour away...no problem, just have to get up in time to get 'rock star' parking...for you that would be a bit earlier, of course

the drive was quick and easy for me

Here are the elevations from Rev3 - http://rev3tri.com/quassy/course-info-3/elevation-charts/

&nb... the dirt road - it is on the run. Essentially the whole run is a hill; it's beautiful but there seem to be nothing but elevations.  The bike is challenging as well, just don't shoot yourself on the bike and leave nothing for the run.  Pretty much the same advice you hear for a lot of races, but this one will punish you if you don't listen.

Note the person a couple notes ago that said run hills.  Then run them again.  I live 17 miles from Quassy - so it's my bike route.
