Kevin07 - 2012-09-12 10:50 AM Is a run/walk legit? I mean if you run walk a marathon does it count as having ran a marathon or completed a marathon or is there a difference? What if you run walk faster than home boy who "ran" a 10:30 pace for the entire race?

It's all legit as long as you don't take a ride in a car. You want to split hairs, a 3 hr marathon guy you might think is pretty quick is walking compared to Ryan Hall or some of the other top runners. I'm not even sure I can hold his pace for 100m.

A 60 year old woman run/walking a 4:30 is more impressive to me than a 30 year old male doing 3:30. Both of em are marathoners though. The olympic power walking time for a 20km run was around 1:28 - lot faster than many runners.

R:W is absolutely legit strategy.  "Run" is somewhat analogous to freestyle in swimming. There are no rules on form like there are for breast stroke or race walking.

As was said, it's all about posting YOUR best time for the race's distance.

This is a stupid question, but how fast do you walk for a RW method?  I mean, casual 2.5mph walk or fast pace 4 mph walk, or something in the middle.  Also, when you start running, do  you run a faster pace than normal?   Say, I normally run 10mm with no walking.  I start doing RW method, 4/1. Do I run 9mm and recover in the walk, to try to have an even out 10mm.   Or, do I run 10mm and walk recover, so i can run longer.  I'm so use to watching current pace on my Garmin, that the walking throws in a wierd component for me.  Or, I focus more on average pace and go by feel, run a tad faster to bring up my goal average pace or walk a tad faster.

For me, when I run for a HM or marathon using Run Walk, I would run at the pace that seems right. Comfortably hard for HM and comfortable for marathon.

The walking I usually try to make sure I am going well, but rarely look at my watch to check the pace. The idea is that it is a rest.

As for the guy who posted about trying it on a 13.1 and failing, it does take some getting used to.
