Subject: Why drink when training for swimming?

In the pool today I witnessed two other swimmers who had drinks on the deck.  I've seen this before and even recall a masters coach once telling me to bring water to the class.  What I don't understand is...why in the world would you train with water thus conditioning your body to require or rely on the need to drink when in a race situation your never going to get the same opportunity?

Maybe it might be needed if your swimming 4-5k since most races aren't that long...but not very many people swim that much.  And the only reason the masters coach said anything to me was because I was cramping (but what he didn't know was that I had just ran a 1/2 marathon before attending his class).  It just doesn't make sense to me!

Can anyone please provide a GREAT reason for it?

I certainly wouldn't do it training for a tri swim for the reasons you mentioned.  Lots of folks in masters will never swim that long and have no real need to condition themselves in that manner though.

I always have gatorade propel with me at the pool if I'm doing sets. Mainly because I do sprint sets and I re-hydrate myself in-between sets. If I'm swimming under 1600 yds. I don't bother.

I never do.  But I get painful leg or foot cramps once in awhile if I do something like your 1/2 marry beforehand.  I should probably make an exception on those days.

For me its not a hydration issue, but a chlorine irritates my throat issue. I'll take a few sips every quarter mile or so. I forgot my gatorade the other day and was suffering, I had to get out of the pool and hit the drinking fountain.

In swim training, I swim 3-4k pretty darn near every swim.  So I bring a drink to the pool with me.

Because you should try to get the most out of your training, and staying hydrated will help you perform well, which will build more conditioning, strength and endurance, so that your next workout can build on that fitness and so on and so on. ON race day, you'll be stronger, and you'll never notice not getting chance to drink for 20 minutes (sprint) or 40 minutes (oly).

I think that's a GREAT reason to bring water.

Its not that i'm tring to condition myself to drink water during the swim.  I just get thirsty.  I would rather work on my form then worry about my hydration.  During a race I hydrate ahead of time.

Agree.  You'll get more out of your training if you take care of your hydration when possible.  I typically have a water bottle at the pool and often even use a scoop of accelerade because I know that keeping my workout nutrition in line will promote a better workout and faster recovery.  I definitely don't become dependent on the fluids so I don't see it as a negative when it comes time to race.  I get sufficient training time without any hydratio when I do my OW swims.  At the pool I'm going to get everything I can out of my training.

A GREAT reason is to stay hydrated.  You don't train your body to go without sweating for races.  Skipping hydration during workouts won't help train you for a race, it will only dehydrate you.

I don't take water with me for runs under 1 hour.  My pool is only open for lap swims in one hour increments so I don't keep water with me at the side of the pool because I train for less than one hour at a time.  I make sure I am well hydrated before and then after.  Seems like if you start a workout well hydrated that you should be able to go 45mins to 1 hour without taking a drink?  I don't know?

Actually, I never ever think I am drinking pool water, but almost always when I am done swimming, I have to pee right away and then usually again before I leave the locker room and then again right when I get home.  And it's always clear like I have been drinking alot, but sometimes if I am in a hurry, I haven't been drinking much at all.  I don't quite get that!

I keep a drink at poolside (usually gatorade).  Generally I drink it when I am finished with my swim.

Adventure Bear and Joel already mention the reasoning why to do that. I swim 4-5x a week and I always bring Gatorade and drink before, while and after swimming to keep me going and allow me to hit my workout goals. Keep in mind that during a race you won’t be doing speed sets, or kick repeats or all out effort for a extended period. But you do that when training to improve your speed, efficiency, aerobic base, etc, and been hydrated will allow you to accomplish that. Finally before a big race it is assume that you will taper, re-stock your energy and eat/drink enough the days leading to the race so by the time you hit the swim start you will be ready to go.

Oh BTW, this is similar of what some cyclists used to do. Their thinking was to train without drinking enough fluids in order to train their bodies to work more efficient dehydrated. But for their misfortune our bodies don’t work that way

i think i may START bringing water or gatorade to the pool with me. whenever i first get in the water is cold and by the time i'm done i am actually sweating in the water. when i get out i generally will go take a room temperature shower and will still be sweating when i'm done. never have stopped to think about that when its happening but i am probably losing alot of fluid. probably why i feel so bad on the days when i run after i swim.

Just keep your mouth open while swimming, particularly in open water. Different types of seaweed and algae are supposed to be good for you, right?

Just kidding. The lake I swim in tastes like dead fish...not like I'm trying to drink it, either!

I've never considered drinking during a swim workout. This is a new concept to me! Maybe I'll give it a try.

i always drink when i swim. my usual workout is 90mins so i sweat a lot - i usually get through two bottles of sports drink, or one sports drink and one water. i also pee at least once during my workout (in the toilet mr asparagus man!)

i think people forget that they sweat when they swim as they are in water exercising. also it helps prevent cramp.

Eh... I can't drink when I swim.

My tummy gets all slooshy and then I feel icky in the water.

Plus, in open water, I swallow enough water to fill my tummy up! HA!

If you don't need water/g-aid while swimming you're not swimming hard enough....

I find most of Tri swimmers do every set at the same speed...

It takes me 11 min to complete the swim leg of some tri's. It takes me 2 hours to complete a good workout. Yeah... like the above said... cramps.

true and that's another problem all together! They fail to develop at least 3 speeds (easy, steady and Tpace/race pace)

I agree with the statement that many athletes swim at the same speed. (I was one of them) I am NOT a swimmer

However, I don’t agree with the statement about not swimming hard enough, that's just nonsense and plain silly. I don't know any GOOD coach advising athletes to swim HARD every session...

That and the water part.  It's honestly never crossed my mind to bring water to the pool, and I've never felt the need to have it, easy swim or hard swim.  To say that you're not swimming hard enough if you don't need it is assuming far too much.

I do it because it really helps get through my w/o in particular cramping-wise. If I don’t drink enough before and while I’ll cramp every time, in particular on very long or speed sessions. Also I feel I can push a bit harder toward the end of a regular w/o when it is usually worth of going a bit faster. Finally, by doing that I don’t finish dehydrated, which for me is vital because I want to recover ASAP or at least have plenty of energy for my mid-day and/or PM workouts…
