Subject: Running ....
I usually prefere training outside, but sometimes weather or other I train indoor, especially bike-run brick training, I can't understand why on the treadmill I am much slower than outdoor, and this happen all the time, is this normal?

Not for me. I feel like I fly on the treadmill for the same HR compared to outside. I would assume the elements, wind, etc would make outside a bit slower. Treadmills are notorious for having inaccurate pace and distance because its based on a belt. I usually train with HR or time as a result indoors.

I can't think of any reason why running on a treadmill one would be slower, outside of maybe boredom.  On a treadmill not only are you not dealing with the elements and the imperfections of the ground, but the ground is moving for you.  You're not actually propelling yourself forward, you're just moving your legs.  It eliminates a significant part of where your energy goes while running outside.  Maybe there's a good reason I am not aware of, but it's not normal for me anyways.

I use the treadmill to help with my pacing but find my speed on the treadmill to be very comparable to what I get on the road, perhaps a bit better.

I must be weird, on the road I can run easy 4 min 30 per km, on the treadmill i can't keep that pace for more than a minute or two... Maybe is the way I run... Not sure...

Okay that I totally agree with. So you feel it's easier to maintain 4:30/km outside and on the treadmill it's difficult? Same thing happens to me. But again that's because the treadmills can be inaccurate in pacing and distance. That's why on a treadmill I ignore pace and distance. They are more estimates for me than accurate measures. GPS watch outdoors much more accurate. Make sense?

Yeah our treadmills at the Y can't be 100% accurate. Just no way. I get te pleasure of running for 60-90 minutes tomorrow on one since it will be raining and 30mph winds tomorrow.

Can't wait...sigh...

I do run with my HR monitor pretty religiously so I just stay in whatever zone I am training in on the TM.

You are likely able to keep the pace but the treadmill can't prove it for you! 430/km on my treadmill feels like I have a jet pack on my back.

One possibility is overheating. I use fans, but I still sweat so much more on the treadmill than outside.

FuzzyD,

as others said, maybe the treadmill readings are not precise. I personally tend to be faster on treadmill by about 15 sec per mile.  I've either read or been told that one need to run with a very slight incline on treadmill to simulate roadrunning due to the forward push that is needed for roadrunning that you do not have to do on treadmill. although that would actually make it more difficult for your treadmill run, and thus slow you down even more.  The only point that I am trying to make really is that if you are going to train regularly on a treadmill, you may want to do at least some parts of it at slight elevation.

Need a HR monitor to start.
Then need to do fitness test to establish proper HR zones.
Then you run based on certain zones, for different lengths, based on what you're training for.

I feel the same way, regardless of the treadmill so I don't think it's a calibration issue. I am jealous of those who think its easier. I just go by RPE: I run at a pace that feels about the same as if I we're running outside. if it happens to be slower, so be it.

I find a treadmill harder. I think it's a few reasons.

First, the gym where I use it is quite hot - I don't have the moving air to cool me down...and their fans aren't great.

Second, I find outside, I self-moderate my pace, whereas on a treadmill I have to go the exact speed all the time. So if I slow down for a second and then speed up again outside - I am good, but inside, I don't have that option.

Third, I've also been fiddling with the incline. Outside, the roads are pretty darned flat. Inside, I am doing 1% or 2% grade - which isn't a lot, but it is noticible when you're used to flat.

Last - usually my harder workouts are inside (intervals, etc.). I only do long runs inside if the weather is dreadful (which it was yesterday).

The joy is that whenever I run outside, I am faster - and outside is what matters.

I have noticed two things with indoor running; you get
either the treadmill or run around a ring like a hamster.  I find the treadmill offers you the ability
to play with the settings and change incline and automatically pace yourself.  The track you can vary your speed and move laterally,
you pass people turn, etc.  I have found
that my natural pace currently is an 8:07 mile; this is at an aerobic pace.  I have not been able to lock this pace in on
the treadmill, so it leaves me going slower or faster than my body naturally wants
to move.  I usually choose the track as6
the lesser of the two evils, as I am actually moving.
