Pre-race routine:

This is an evening race, so I worked. I got to site at about 4:50 and changed then took the bus to the start. It was cool and raining so I took the bus to the start and waited inside.
Event warmup:

Waited inside until about 35 minutes before, had one GU, and did a few miles of warmup including strides on the track. Felt very well ready for the start

Comments:

Started under control, in a huge pack. This is a gigantic race for a 5k, like 1500 participants, so the beginning you just stay in the pack. At about 1/2 mile it opened up a bit but the seedings seemed pretty good since I just picked out a few people and stayed right with them. I kept my breathing very deliberately and just kept the pace steady. I didn't feel like I was over pushing, but I haven't done any speed work so I really didn't know what to expect for pacing. At 1.5 miles, I knew there was no way I could pick up enough speed to beat Matt's 21:18, so I just settled the effort into a hard and slightly uncomfortable pace. I never went to the excruciating place but this was a hard effort. I felt good straight through to the end, and didn't leave a lot of time on the table. I was passing a fair number of people the last 1/2 mile, which isn't typical for me, though a few young kids flew by me in the chute.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe just push harder, but I say that after every race. I need to get my running mental game together.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran back to the car and drove home. Ate non-stop until writing this report.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I've done a lot less running this year, only 342 miles vs. 752 last year. So to be only 2 seconds slower wasn't a bad effort. I think I pushed harder last year, but this was a good hard effort.

Event comments:

Great race. This is probably too many people for a 5k. It was crowded the entire run. It didn't slow me down really, but it was just crowded.

Forgot my HR monitor in the car! Damn. 1/2 mile splits: 3:22 3:29 3:29 3:28 3:32 3:38 0:53
Course: Fast and net loss. It had been raining for a few hours, but it felt good and there was no issue with overheating and it wasn't cold enough to be a problem. Ideal conditions really.

Warren great effort and great run especially considering that you've run less miles than you did last year. Like I said I'd take this time for a 5K any day of the week. Great job.

I cracked up when I read that you have "only" logged 342 miles this year so far. I think you had a pretty awesome time considering you are carrying a few extra pounds and have logged fewer miles. Your recap as me thinking about attempting a PR in the 5k distance next Saturday.

Great run, and thats alot of people to run a 5k with. I think I'd use your stradegy and just hold onto the pack for as long a possible!
