Moses Lake, Washington
United States
BuDu Racing
Sunny
Total Time = 10h 00m
Overall Rank = 60/101
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 6/7
Pre-race routine:

One thing of muscle milk and a protein bar both about 1 -to 1 1.2 hours before race.
Event warmup:

Did some light stretching and foot tested temperature of water.
Swim
  • 20m 17s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

Rough start with the mass start and slim area to work with between boat ramp and first buoy, but since I started myself at the back, I avoided mist of the confusion. Only one person sort of cut across me to the first buoy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really as I hope with experience I will get better at OWS and be starting out a little farther up in the pack and not the back. Also with experience, should be able to do more freestyle in OWS like I can do in the pool.
Transition 1
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

Socks were a bit of a problem. Also, suit sticking at heels, around chip. Semi lost balance when trying to stand and remove feet.
What would you do differently?:

Work with not using socks. Need to utilize spray with wetsuits.
Bike
  • 38m 56s
  • 11 miles
  • 17.08 mile/hr
Comments:

Not bad for first race. Was worried about keeping the right distance between me and the person in front of me, but that really wasn't an issue because I was passing the few that I was coming up on easily.
What would you do differently?:

Get more accustomed to aero bars. (Was first race with new bike.)
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

T2 was a smooth transition. Even though I took a little time to double tie my shoes, I felt very good with it.
What would you do differently?:

Elastic laces
Run
  • 28m 48s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was smooth. Even for having it still open to the public as the race was going on.
What would you do differently?:

Laces mainly and maybe not have a drink right out of the transition area. Thought it might bother me, but it didn't. For sprints, water mainly to cool head if need not to drink.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretches to have muscles not tighten up. Water and HEED.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First triathlon. Inexperience.

Event comments:

I feel there could of been more support for the swim legs. Seemed there were very few kayaks to help support the race event. Other than that, rest of the race was wonderful and the support by the community was great.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?
