Rest yesterday. 5 miles running this morning. Does anyone sometimes just wish that the season was over or really regret the race they signed up for? I love my anual Detroit Half marathon. Its a realy cool race but I'm just tired of training. I have goals for the race so I'll keep pushing for a few more weeks. But, I'm really looking forward to a break and recharging my batteries. The hard part to fathom, is that after a couple week break I'll start gearing up for another year of training.

My last big race for the year is Tawas, and I find that for about 2 weeks after the race I am really motivated. The last two years because I want to beat my time, and this year because I am not happy with my performance. After that I start to mentally shut down and have trouble with motivation. So, yes, I get the same thing, I'm just lucky I don't have anything real ( not serious its a fun race) until I do the 15 mile Witchy Wolf at the end of January to kick off my year.

On a side note, has anyone heard of weaving on your bike to burn extra calories or riding close to the fog line the "protect your lane?" I mediated a case today and ended up getting into an argument with one of the defense attorneys. His theory was that the cyclist on his "professional" road bike was at fault when a 92 year old lady hit him with her car from behind because he was either weaving or riding close to the fog line, but on the shoulder of the road. I got angry when he suggested that drivers should not be responsible for hitting a bike if the rider is too close to the road. I had never heard of "weaving" as a form of drill on the bike, nor protecting your lane. I was just wondering if this is a thing.

Mitch, I get the same feeling. The difference here is - no off season.
What helps me with motivation is regular runs with a group. Not a race, just social runs and hanging around together afterwards. I actually look forward to that on the weekend. What also helps me mentally is the approach to training: I don't train, I go for a run instead. The word training means you do it for some event in the future, which is like a price to pay to be able to race. All those months and countless runs for one event? Of course the mind will resist that. On the other hand, 'going for a run' is a reward. Subtle difference, but it helps.

Jim, I never heard of those things.

Haven't heard of the weaving thing, other than zig zagging to go up steep hills, but I am familiar with cyclists "taking the lane". Here's an example from the California DMV: (not sure if this helps)

When to Take the Traffic Lane

A bicycle lane is a designated traffic lane for bicyclists, marked by a solid white line, and typically breaking into a dotted line at the corner. A bicycle lane is different from a simple white line showing the edge of the road because it follows specific width requirements and is clearly marked as a bike lane. Many roads do not have designated bicycle traffic lanes, so bicyclists share the traffic lane to the left of the white line. If there is no shoulder or bicycle lane and the traffic lane is narrow, ride closer to the center of the lane. This will prevent motorists from passing you when there is not enough room. Bicyclists can travel at speeds of 20 mph, or faster. You should also use the traffic lane when you are traveling at the same speed as the traffic around you. This will keep you out of motorists’ blind spots and reduce conflicts with right-turning traffic.

I about got splattered by an SUV yesterday that completly ignored the "turning traffic must yield to Bicycles" Sign that accompanies that dotted line... The most important safety measure for a bicyclist is AWARENESS! And the realization that 99% of people driving cars are oblivious to bikes. Be Safe Everyone.

26 mile ride before lunch yesterday then I did my FIRST Masters Swim Class at Dusk. Today I got my day started with an RPE2 run with my dogs for just over an hour.

Mitch this is how I felt last year - after B2B my recovery was 5 months, yes five. I was so glad the season was over and didn't want to start training again.

This year I have found my training plan and first race of the season in April before this season ends! It means only 4wks of off season and I am SOOOOO excited already!

in reflection last year I had NO goal for next season and so was 'lazy. This year I have my goal already planned and stoked. not sure if this is the reason but nothing else has changed.

Jim - you are such a professional - 92 y/o driver hit cyclist - I couldn't have kept calm; there is a time that we all must surrender our license or at least acknowledge impaired ability to drive - regardless of how someone is behaving in front of us. Thats the responsibility of driving a car; you have to be aware of everything around you and adjust your diving accordingly, not hit the cyclist for weaving. sorry too much said already, rant over.

6 miles near race pace this morning. I feel like I'm faster than last year and training logs indicate the same. Wildcard for me is whether I have the running endurance. About 3 weeks to race date. I'm really excited to see if I can beat my PR I set last year!

adding two swims; today was a 1k TT and I finally beat 16mins with 15:56; pacing was good at 3:50 4:05 4:00 3:58. = 1:36/100, I could really feel the pull from the moment my hand entered the water until it exited; and when I did I felt like a knife thru butter - even though my lactate was screaming :-)

Catching up on my totals for the last couple of days including todays 45' swim followed by a 3 mile run on the mill.

A lot of folks are talking about relaxing their training in the off season a bit or changing their training focus. I find myself needing to focus more on my run with two HMs coming up in the spring but I just can't seem to convince myself that I don't need to swim 6 days a week. Back in March when I started training for my fist Tri I could barely swim 25yds in the pool and 6 months later I can swim over a mile in the open water. It freaks me out to think if I relax my swim I will loose all that I have gained, not to mention what swimming has done for my overall fitness levels. How much swimming do you guys fit into a week during the off season to keep the status quo?

Dennis, I heard on BT someone say that 2x/week will maintain whatever swim fitness you have and 3x will improve it. (I actually do 1x/wk... and also not improving, but not going down either ).

Sam, glad you are ok. 99% of people in cars are oblivious to everything, including other cars.

Mark H, I am so envious of your swim times.

Mitch, you can set a new PR, I can tell.

I don't really have an off season either, but during my training, there are times that I feel like I don't really want to or wish I didn't have to. At those times, I remind myself of the para-triathletes that can't see, or have artificial legs, etc. I remind myself of people who would love to be able to train but can't. Then I end up with a completely different attitude. That works for me.

Having some extra tightness and soreness in my left Achilles tendon and calf. Coach gave me a subsitute workout today, stationary bike and elliptical. Boring, but necessary.

Long run yesterday. Poor nutritional choices before run, eating GU too soon, plus heat and fatigued legs made for a very tough 12.5 miles. Then, some Plantar Fascitis has flared up in my left foot. Stretching and icing and taking a couple days off (from running) hoping the tendon will settle down.

Hope you have a speedy recovery. I have the same issue but in my right calf. Went to the Doctor 3 weeks ago and she ordered no running or biking for 3 weeks.....I made it 2 1/2 weeks, close enough.( ok so maybe I ran once or twice on the treadmill, my bad!!) I just stared running and riding again, after two weeks on the elliptical and the tightness is gone for now. I think I was trying to build my base miles too fast. She recommended the compression sock over the calf to help the swelling on long runs. I'm just going to take it slow and build the base miles at a slower pace and see what happens. Again I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
