Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 38m 51s
Overall Rank = 301/486
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 37/42
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45, had my usual breakfast of oatmeal, packed up the car and made the 30 minute drive to Tunica
Event warmup:

After getting things settled in transition, got in the water to swim a bit. The water was warmer than the air temp!
Swim
  • 15m 41s
  • 440 yards
  • 03m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well, it took about 40 yards before I started to panic. I couldn't see, I couldn't breathe and my stroke was terrible. Swimming through the channel was odd, as the water was only two feet deep, but then it dropped off and I couldn't find the bottom. I think I ended up walking/swimming on my back more than anything. I was just happy to get out of the water
What would you do differently?:

Get a wetsuit, train with it so I don't freeze. Practice swimming in the open water before race day.
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

Transition was a giant mud pit by the time I got there. Used a water bottle to get some of the mud off my feet, socks on, shoes on, helmet on, carried my bike out to the pavement.
Bike
  • 53m 1s
  • 12 miles
  • 13.58 mile/hr
Comments:

This is a tale of two bike rides. For the first half, I was plugging along at 18+ MPH, feeling good. I made the turn to start heading back, got smacked with a headwind and all of a sudden felt very nauseated. This slowed me down to around 12MPH. I was on pace for a 40 minute time, ended up around 53 minutes. Garmin had the course 0.82 miles long
What would you do differently?:

Not sure what caused the nausea, but if that stayed away I would have been fine.
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Already had my running shoes on, so this was a quicker transition. I think 1 minute of this was navigating around mud pits
Run
  • 24m 50s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Finally, something I know I'm good at. I felt ok after the first little climb. My Garmin has the course short, 2.95 miles.
Post race
Warm down:

None really. Grabbed some Gatorade and got my stuff out of transition to head home. All i wanted was to wash my mouth out, get rid of that awful lake water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Well, my swimming sucks, my open water swimming even more so, and my biking is pretty terrible. Cold, rainy and windy weather certainly didn't help, but no excuse

Most people believe that running barefoot is dangerous. Certainly, depending upon the surface, they would be correct. However, there is some suggestion that running barefoot may reduce injuries.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
