If you had to stop triathlons, due to medical reasons caused by biking, so no possibility of starting again what would you do to replace the "need"? Other than doing just run/swim events

What does your injury allow for? If I could simply no longer bike, then ultra running would be my thing. If I could not run, nor bike.... I'd continue to swim a bit, but would have to pick up something else to get outside.

Ultra running. If I couldn't run either? Bowling > swimming. More to look at and you can drink beer while doing so.

Run-only events (probably some marathons), open water swimming, and (though you said other than) swim-run events. Honestly, I wouldn't be heart-broken if I couldn't bike, though I'd miss bike touring. Not being able to run would be another story. And I'd really miss swimming, too. I don't really like other sports (unless you count recreational outdoor stuff like hiking and kayaking) and suck at all of them, so the time not biking would more likely go toward more running/swimming, or non-sport stuff like reading, taking courses, etc.

Marathons.

Ultras

if you're like me- and just like to do any kind of continuous aerobic activity.  I'm like a rat on a wheel.

Running, flying, fishing, duck hunting, drinking (not in combination with any of the previous - maybe I should think on bowling) and some swimming.  Mostly running from an endurance sport standpoint, as I really love it, but the time saved not biking and swimming less would allow all of the others in a way I can't whilst tri-ing.

In some ways, it'd be nice to have all that time back from the bike (as long as I could still race in running events), although I've come to really like the bike for shorter (1-2 hour) rides to balance out the exercise.

That said, I'm tri-ing until I can't.

Did you have an injury that actually puts you in this position, or are you just wondering (hoping it's the latter for your sake)?

Matt

Well, considering I threw my back out doing Crossfit...that is out

I'd go back to more running races and continue to teach spin classes. Swim on occasion and supplement with more TRX and hot yoga!

A Friend owns a boxing studio that I've been wanting to try. Once my shoulder heals from my bike crash I'll give it a try.

Yep, endorphin junkie here, so I'd find something to sweat it out!

Agree. I am not in love with biking, so I have no problem with running and swimming more. Train for longer running races and do long distance swimming events. There are a few Aquathlon races where there is just swimming and running, which I would do more of if there were more available. So, go for it!

Judo.

Jujitsu.

Some other combat martial art.

I really do miss my days of intense martial arts training.

There just aren't enough hours in the day. If there were, I would be training for tris and doing yoga, and martial arts, and working in my garden, and tearing apart a classic car, and...........

Hard to imagine a medical condition that would stop you from biking. Biking is one of those things you can do forever. I was still riding 5 years ago when I herniated a disc in my back. I couldn't do anything else(even swim) but I could still ride.

Biking. It is my favorite of the three, and even if you have a medical condition that doesn't let you road bike, a variety of modifications can be made to still get you on the bike. I also haven't been hiking much lately and miss it. Then there is my poor, neglected kayak.

Not so much an injury but a "situation" possibly caused by biking. I am getting tests done to see if biking is causing problems in the baby making department. And yes I have been properly fit on my bike, twice.
Won't know for sure for a couple weeks but already know there is a problem just trying to explain it. If it's naturally that when then my wife will allow biking, if not kids come first.

Some interesting options here though

Not an issue for us girls but....if you really wanted to keep biking, maybe a recumbent? Not practical for racing but maybe for joyriding and tours?

Same... There's no endorphin release like you get when you kick someone in the face.

I'd have to go back to a stand up art though since my shoulder is borked and I can't take judo falls any more.
