Sunny
Total Time = 1h 20m 1s
Overall Rank = 71/368
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 3/12
Pre-race routine:

I had to get up early to get downtown, find a parking spot and get ready for a 7:30 start. It was a beautiful but muggy morning...I knew the run was going to be brutal given the weather forecast. I decided to go with the tinted goggles since it looked like we would be staring into the sun on the swim across the river. I studied the swim course to make sure I knew where all the turn buoys were. I missed the final buoy last year and it cost me at least a minute on that swim so I didn't want to make the same mistake.
Event warmup:

Light stretching and jogging to get the muscles warmed up.
Swim
  • 07m 9s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

solid swim. no one passed me but I could tell someone was drafting off of me because I could feel their hands slap my feet every now and then.
What would you do differently?:

move up in the starting order to swim with faster people...maybe catch their draft.
Transition 1
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

I lost 30 seconds to 1st and 2nd place in T1 and missed 2nd place by 42 seconds so I need to do a better job on my transitions. I was 3/12 in my T1 time for the group.
What would you do differently?:

go without socks? I don't know...it doesn't feel like I'm wasting much time.
Bike
  • 41m 26s
  • 22 kms
  • 31.86 km/hr
Comments:

solid ride. Outbound it's a rolling gradual climb. I tried to maintain a comfortably hard effort throughout. Cross-winds were more of an issue inbound than outbound.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

couldn't find my rack spot at first...probably hurt me 10 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

chalk my spot
Run
  • 27m 9s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 26s  min/km
Comments:

It was hot and I haven't been putting in enough run mileage (tweaked my calf about a month ago) so I knew it was going to be a sufferfest. I was hurting pretty good coming back across the bridge...it's a lot longer incline coming back than it is going over...just told myself to not stop. Once I got to the top I knew I was home free and just tried to maintain a good pace to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

train more
Post race
Warm down:

water, cold towel, gatorade...repeat. Chatted with my friends that were racing and then went to the food tent to get some more nourishment.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Transition speed and run fitness. I need to work on both of those. I could have dialed back the bike a bit but I think I would have just been trading minutes between my bike and my run.

Event comments:

I actually left before I found out I got a podium spot..dang. I was done by 9:30 and they didn't have results of any kind posted at the time I left which was 10:15. That was the only annoyance ... otherwise, the race was set up and run nicely.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
