I finished Steelhead 70.3 this weekend, and saw that I could buy the finishers medal on Ebay for $59 from a private party. Is this common?

I've never seen that before but to be honest I've never looked.  Not sure who or why anyone would want to buy or sell one.

That's hilarious! No, not common. I just had to check, and there are only two results when you search "Ironman Finisher Medal" and one was the one you referred to. There's no way anyone is stupid enough to pay that. lol.

The only reason I can possibly think of is if you were a finisher of that race, and lost your own medal, but wanted to have one for sentimental reasons.

Immediately after some of the bigger IMs you'll see them on eBay - along with other finishers gear like the t-shirt, hat, etc. that you receive at the finish line.

Not something I would do, but it did remind me of this thread:

Maybe she needs a medal. Or maybe not, we don't know for sure.

$59, if I sell all my medals I might be able to buy a new bike!

I looked to buy medals on ebay. Looking for Chicago Marathon 2004 and Boston marathon 2008. Reason why because I would love to hang them in my office but I do not want to bring the ones I earned to the office just in case.

I seen Boston marathon medals go for $100+ couple days after the marathon. I suspect its more finish line volunteers grabbing an extra medal or 2 than finishers. Then again you never know If you can do a race and get good portion of the entry fee back by selling your medal which you do not care about then why not?

I can see buying one off ebay to create a memorial shadow box/collage type thing for a loved one as a gift. also, I had my garage broken into several years ago - they took my box that had my marathon medals. if medals for any of those races ever popped up, I'd buy them ... but not for $59. $20, yes, $59, no.

I see one for Boise 70.3 signed by Anton Ohno-- 22 bucks. I'm going to track this auction and bump in 30 days.

If it is sold on August 3rd, I'm pretty sure it will still be sold 30 days from now.

The medal we're discussing in this thread has not sold and the auction ends in 29 days.

Hmmm...I don't see that one.  I figured you were referring to the sold auction since you quoted my post with links to sold auctions, specifically the one that sold for $22.

But this isn't quite the same. I assume that Apolo participated in that race and you are really paying for his autograph.

It's not as much fun when I have to explain it. Yes, I mentioned the $22 celebrity-signed medal to show relative value to one that is unsigned and basically worthless. Which circles back to my point that no one is stupid enough to pay $60 for it.

Steelhead ran out of finisher medals and some people were pretty upset. I did hear the RD was going to mail the medal to them, however, not too many people were thrilled with that either since it's not given at the finish line.

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.
