Depends on the intensity. In a race, probably every stroke. Lower intensity stuff in training, I usually breathe bilaterally, so every other stroke.

Preferable to breathe bi-laterally as it helps create a symmetrical stroke.

I breathe when needed. and I try to do it bilaterally, and it seems to be every 3 or 5 depending on my pace.

As a newer swimmer I have really taken to breathing exclusively on my left side every stroke. It feels "right" and I did try bilateral early on but I wasn't sure if I could wait that long in-between breaths. However, as I focus on my swimming technique this coming winter, I aspire to transition to bilateral breathing.

Every 2 or 4 left side is primary.

I normally breathe every 2nd on my right.

I can breathe on my left, but not as good at it.  Something I've been working on specifically in practice.

training every 3rd stroke for the most part. (less on 25's and 50's)

racing it depends. Often I'll breathe every 2 on one side due to sighting and/or fists/feet.

Depends on effort. I much prefer to breathe bilaterally. Every third stroke.

It open water I go to just right side as it seems to help me with sighting.

Learn to breathe bilaterally it's worth it.

On the 3. Bi-lateral, but still slow as a dumptruck.

On the 3rd but only on the right. Too old to change, even if I wanted to, which I don't. It works fine for me.

I resemble that remark. I have had a huge breakthrough in the last couple weeks just by working on my catch. My 1500 m OWS last night was 8 minutes faster than it was two weeks ago. I am so freaking excited! (Sorry to derail, but I am so excited!)

On the 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.  Though like others have said, it's intensity dependent.  I try to do all of my easy workouts on a 4/5 breathing pattern - it's taken me years to build up to this and if you are a beginner, focus on every 2 or 3 for a long time.  Occasionally I will do the first 50 yards on 7/7 then roll back to a 4/5.  Fast workouts, which I infrequently do I usually fall back to a 3/3.

The surprising thing I find when you train in many different breathing patterns and get to know them well, is that when your body is 'run down' or 'getting sick', you can't maintain your usual comfortable breathing pattern.  For example, even if I'm not conscious of it yet, if I can't maintain at 5/4 pattern on an easy workout, I know I need to keep the workout light and to get some sleep for the next few days.  Or make sure I have had a rest week.

I find breathing patterns fascinating as a barometer into your well-being.

Every stroke. Unless I am specifically doing drills which focus on bilateral breathing.

Every right arm.  Seems to work better for me to keep air going in and out more regularily

To each their own though.

I'm really working on breathing bilaterally. I haven't been able to confirm this with my times but I feel I'm faster. I'm thinking it's because by breathing bilaterally I'm keeping my head in a better position for a longer period of time...or my breathing technique in general sucks. Swimming for me is a battle.

I'm new and typically breath every right. When doing short intervals I will working on bilateral every 3. If I am swimming distance in the pool I count 100's by always swimming the last 25 bilateral. Breaks things up a bit.

LIke Ron, every 2,3,4,5,6,7 .... whenever I need air, and depending on my effort.

Warmups I can easily swim breathing 2 or 3 times per 25. typically during a moderate set I am breathing every 4 strokes and alternating which side I breath to (to the right one length and to the left the next for example). As my effort picks up I'll naturally need air sooner, so I'll breath every 3, and only when I'm doing fast efforts or some racing I'll need to breath every 2.

I'm like the others who say it depends.  I don't give my breathing pattern any thought at all.  When swimming easy, it may be every 5 strokes, alternating sides.  As the effort level increases in open water where I want to see what's on both sides of me, I will find myself in a 2, 2, 3, 2, 2, 3...pattern, breathing twice in a row on one side, skipping a stroke, then twice on the opposite side.  In races, it frequently becomes every 2 strokes, breathing on the same side to avoid sun, waves, or splashing from another swimmer on the other side, and getting enough air.  Sprinting, there's no breathing.

Similar to above. For easy swims, every 3-4 strokes. For harder distance efforts, my preferred pattern in 2-2-4 on the right. Sometimes 2-2-3 instead. I can do bilateral breathing and do it in races when needed, sometimes in training (pulling, warmups). I've experimented a lot and have found zero difference in speed between the two patterns that work best for me--2-2-4 and 3. So I do what feels most natural in hard efforts (2-2-4), unless water conditions (current, navigation, course) demand otherwise.

Many people in the triathlon world think they need to just emulate Ian Thorpe to have a faster time, or have a similar stroke to Michael Phelps to cruise through the swim. Unfortunately...
