As your all aware I'm new to the sport but have already become aware of a certain class or snob element within the cycling fraternity. ... On recent outings I've regularly meet other cyclists going the opposite way and I always acknowledge them politely with a nod and Hello, this however is usually meet with silence. Surely a response is not too much to ask?

Ha ha I've noticed that too. I'm pretty much the only one in my squad that waves and rarely get any form of acknowledgement back!

The most ignorant are the people with top of range bikes and all the race team gear to match! I liken it to golfers I play golf too and they're even worse! !!

Sounds like you're a runner. I've noticed that, too. Most runners will say hi to everyone (or at least huff and puff and smile). Bikers seem to avoid eye contact and ignore you. Maybe all the lycra squeezes the personality right out of them.

LOL!

You must not be a member of bike forums..

The waving thread of the month:
http://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/968416-what-fellow-road-bike...

If you read that, you'll soon realize that it is part of the road bike culture to not wave. Some will go against the grain, but those that are trying too hard to be a hard man will not wave on a bike even though they would anywhere else in life. Don't worry about it, some of those people are still really good people and not snobs, they are just trying to fit in.

Maybe it was obvious you were a triathlete and they were trying not to distract you so that you didn't ride off the road.

Ha! My acknowledgements might be too subtle at times. I might also need to concentrate on something over on my side of the road. Some small obstructions, traffic coming up or overtaking, or maybe I'm just going over my route. I've seen no one group type that always stands out and we just don't know what all the other guy is dealing with.

It really depends on where you are. Around here, cyclists are friendly, but runners are snobs. Runners will almost never acknowledge another runner. A couple years ago, I couldn't figure out why even cyclists that I didn't recognize were waving to me when I ran, then I realized that my tan lines marked me as a cyclist. On the other hand, one time my blood pressure crashed while I was running. I was sitting on the curb with my head between my knees just trying to find the strength to reach into my pocket and get my phone. I can tell you for a fact that runners around here will leave you for dead on the side of the road.

I've been riding since the '80s. Back then pretty much everyone waved but there were way fewer of us out there riding.

The not waving thing is fairly recent (well, going back 10 years or so) and affects other groups that used to wave such as MINI Cooper owners. In a MINI forum every couple of weeks there is another thread about people not waving.

This is just society today. Whenever I run, whether by myself or in a group, I'm always saying hello, giving the nod. Hell, I even say hi to dogs when they are in people's yards "Hello Puppy". I can understand if the recipient of the nod/hello is in the zone and burning out a finish, but in normal training it is just rude.

With regard to 'they maybe trying to hard themselves' statement I wouldn't mind if that was the case. ..... is generally me who's lungs are dangling out their mouth struggling up the hill as they free wheel in by but I still manage to acknowledge their presence.

Around where I leave people are usually very friendly whether running or on the bike. It's a smaller size town with a ton of active people so we have a pretty good community. Plus being in a smaller town with a ton of people running and on bikes makes all the drivers more respectful and cautious.

I tend to agree that most don't wave, but I'll typically give them a pass. For me, I try to give a wave to everyone, but there are definitely times/roads where two hands on the bars are needed - that's just because I am not a great bike handler yet. However, if there's any way to get the wave in then I will do it - karma counts! That applies for helping riders who get flats, too.

Everyone here is really friendly.  People wave all the time.  They invite you to join their groups if you're riding the same segment.  They'll stop and offer help if you flat out.  It's pretty nice.

Runners here are also really friendly.  And even more so when the conditions are horrible for running (heat, rain, etc.).

But if you're on a Harley and there's a group of guys on Sportbikes, or vice versa, forget it.

You can find these threads on motorcycle boards, bike boards, and apparently, from what was written above, Mini Cooper boards. LOL

The funniest thing to me is that every single poster on any of these threads is a "waver"......I guess people who don't wave don't post on the internet.

Same goes with drafters, no drafters ever post on the internet boards.

i find that solo cyclist will always wave, I even got a wave from Hincapie a while back... groups will not wave since you have to be ready to escape if the guy in front of you instantly flats and goes over the handlebars, or the guy who is being a jerk rides up the center of the two pacelines, or the guy next to you is turning around to talk to his buddy and veers into your bars.

^^^ THIS

Sometimes I wave, and they don't, sometimes they wave, and I don't, sometimes we both wave and its magical ...

Honestly ... none if it really matters, and it certainly doesn't make someone a snob based upon their reciprocal waving response .. or lack thereof.

Now if the Jeep drivers stop waving, then we will know the apocalypse is nigh!

^^Agree. If I am in a tight group I will not wave, not worth the risk of not being able to react if needed.

However our line will usually yell Hi or give some head nods.
