Herrick) but I would like to know if this training aims to make you finish with a specific time. It's my first Half-Ironman and my goal is to finish withing 6:00hs. I know that it also depend on the course but I'll do the 70.3 Syracuse and it shouldn't be too hard. Thanks |

Challenging first half of the bike course. Run is brutal. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Time for the 70.3 Ironman Is it the beginner HIM plan on this site? if so I used it and broke 6 hours in my first HIM on a fairly tough course. I did 5:53; bike course was 3.5 km over standard distance and I had a few minor mechanical issues, so probably somewhere around 5:45 if the course was standard and without the stops. It all depends on your fitness. People of widely varying speeds can follow a plan, with different results. The plan isn't oriented to a specific pace. (The intermediate one says it is for someone who wants to break 5 hours, but I've known people who've done 6 hours plus, a good race for them, using that plan. ) I'm a strong runner and swimmer, slow biker. I found that for the beginner plan, It was better to do the bike workouts by distance. I think the longest ride was 3 hours--following that plan, I'd never ride the race distance at my pace!. Instead I aimed for 90-100 km on long rides, followed by a brick run. I pretty much followed the plan except for that and substituting some of the swims with my hometown masters group workouts or stuff from Sara McLarty's mater's swim site. |

Challenging first half of the bike course. Run is brutal. Yes. Swim is just your basic swim. The first 12-13 miles of the bike course is literally uphill. Nothing brutal but it's an almost constant climb. There's a couple really steep descents/ascents after that. One at about mile 21 (I went 50 mph down the hill and about 6 mph back up) and another at around mile 30. Last 1/3 of the bike is pretty fast though as it's net downhill. The run course is just evil. There's no flat section, mostly rolling terrain with a soul crusher of a hill that's 1 mile up and 1 mile down... and you have to do it twice. |
