The Navy is shipping me up to Groton for the spring and summer. I was hoping to find some people to swim/bike/run with. Also, any must do CT races? I'm coming from South Carolina (the flat part) so hills are not my thing but I'm willing to learn.

Hello Navybeaver.

I am relatively new to tri's having just started them last year. I am going a HM w/ the Shoreline Sharks in March - my first event with them. There is the "Lake "T" series through the year and also Winding Trails weekly sprint series (woods / trails / mountain bike).

They couldn't wait to ship you up here in summer?  Lol.. been a snowy Jan / February..

Later,

-Dennis

Is the shoreline sharks a tri group? Do they have website, facebook, or newsletter? Thanks!

Welcome to Connecticut!  My husband is currently stationed in Groton...for two more weeks until he retires (we are staying in the area).  A great tri to do in early June is the Mystic River Tri (no link yet.  It is put on by the Mystic YMCA).  It is close to home and a great small town race.  Niantic Bay Tri is another good one too.  It is put on by the Hartford Marathon Foundation and is a great race.

If you're wanting to travel a bit the Max Performance races are really well run. i did Escape the Cape last year (altho those water temps might freeze a southern boy)

You'll be about an hour away from me. One event you might be interested in is a duathalon that is actually held right on Thompson Speedway. This is the second year they are holding it. It's called Du the Speedway. You can find it on the "Firm Racing" site.

Another sprint you'll find on the site is "The DK Give it a Tri" August 22. Laid back event, couple hills, nothing long or steep. A couple doctors put it together to promote health changes. They get a couple hundred racers on race day. They hold sessions on Saturdays for those who have never done a tri before. They get to practice right on the course so no surprises race day. This one is in Moosup on Moosup pond and would be an hour from the base for travel. Thompson I would allow 1.5 hours not being from the area. Both are right off of 395. I don't know where you'll be living but once you get out of Groton, you have some very nice roads for training. Hope this helps.

How does a speedway time trial work? that sounds very interesting.

I would love to know some goods roads to be able to pull 30-50 miles rides off of. I'm a week away from arriving now. It's 80 degrees down here in SC and riding is amazing.

Thanks for the continued info!

Welcome! there are a bunch of great races in CT. Rev 3 does Quassy in June, but you got to get in hill shape fast for there. There are a bunch of great sprints, especially later in the fall.

Outdoor riding seems to be a little behind schedule this year, was hoping to get out this weekend, but Spring has NOT sprung.

I'm riding indoors at Connecitcut Cycle Center (40 mins from groton) and am part of C3, great group. We do long group rides on the weekends (leveled groups and different distances). In addition, weekly swims (indoor and lake), weekly track workouts, and group runs.

It's a duathlon. Run, bike, run. All of it is right on the race course that is actually a road course, not the typical oval. You get some banked curves, ups and downs, it was pretty fun not having to worry about cars.
