13 | Subject: Maple Leaf City Sprint Tri Hi everyone, I'm new to these forums and new to triathlons. This event, being held in Baldwin City, KS will be my first. It takes place July 25. I was wondering if anyone had raced this last year and if there are any pro tips for a beginner. The swim is only 300M so I think that should be fine. My main concern there is that I don't get overzealous and blow my entire stack of energy on the swim because it's so short and I'm trying to blow through it, and then I won't be able to perform at a high level in the bike and run. The bike and run are standard distances of 12 miles and 5K respectively. I really don't like biking that much so I consider that my weak event, even though I'm decent at it. I love to run, so normally I wouldn't even think much about the running portion, except that since it's last, I'll be tired. And, having done some mini-bricks to work on my bike-run transition and MAN my legs feel heavy when I try to run after biking. It's like they have lead weights attached. So, anyways, I feel really good about how my training is going so far and I'm looking forward to the race, but of course I'm a bit nervous, mainly because there's so much I don't know and I'm not really sure what to expect come race day. Hopefully I'll have a good report to give when all is said and done. |

Extreme Veteran 815 Shawnee, KS | Subject: RE: Maple Leaf City Sprint Tri It is a perfect race for first timers. A group of 5 of us went out there last year and had a blast. It is very laid back, with people on all sorts of bikes and all levels of abilities. The swim is a reverse serpentine swim. Start on left side of the lane, go down and back and turn under the ropes x 6 times. Bike is an out and back on roads that are in pretty good shape. There are some rolling hills, but nothing severe. The run got hot, but is flat and you run the last 400m around the schools track. Just have fun and enjoy the experience. You chose a good one for your first. Watch out for this guy....he likes to cheat Edited by joncolby 2015-05-01 10:27 AM (simpson.jpg) Attachments ---------------- simpson.jpg (11KB - 6 downloads) |

You think he will be back to defend the title? Sounds like he is enjoying ice cream and packing on the lbs. Oh, and Mark, I was even a further back 4th. |

13 | Subject: RE: Maple Leaf City Sprint Tri Hey everyone and thanks for all the replies. Hopefully I'll see some of you out there. Don't expect too much in the way of competition from me though . Good to see everyone is enjoying some good food. I'm on a super healthy kick right now myself, so no pizza or M&Ms for me. I've lost over 30 lbs in the last 3 months though, so I think it's worth it . |

13 | Subject: RE: Maple Leaf City Sprint Tri Wow, what a great event! It was really fun! I gotta say though, whomever was saying it is basically flat must have been running a different race. Or maybe the course was changed? At any rate, the only bad part for me was the swim. My usual 300m time is between 7:00 and 7:10, but I wound up with a 9:16! I kept having to stop to catch my breath because of how many mouthfuls of water I was taking in. I guess I gotta somehow figure out how to deal with that, because it was really rough! So, congrats to everyone who finished. I'm looking forward to hopefully doing it again next year! Oh, and my overall time was 1:21:24 so not too shabby for a first timer. |
