Yeah that's the problem with fly. When most people try to slow down, me included, their efficiency goes to poop and it ends up being just as hard to go slower but you get less rest.

I'll be giving it another try tonight.  If things get tough, I cut to free also.  I figure when the technique goes to trash and I'm doing the butterstruggle, it's better not to do that at all.  Might as well do free and at least try to get stronger.

Have done that too, but also went to 1-arm more often once I figured that out.

I switch to free because I can't do 1 arm fly fast enough to keep up with the lane.

Ha! Happened to me too with various strokes. Namely breaststroke, or most any kickset! Fly probably did become my strongest stroke though.
Eventually I also ended up with a couple breaststroke specialists though. They're more balanced than I was and made timing really interesting. When and what do we want to run into each other doing? My fly was faster, but breaststroke much slower. I'd pull ahead in an IM, but they would catch up later. And then we had choice strokes mixed in at times. I'd do a 25 fly in :16-17 whereas they would go maybe :22-23 in their stroke.

Steve, regarding IMTX, DOOOOOOIIIIEEEEET. I'd offer you a home stay for it, but I'm at least an hour away from the race site so I'll be staying in a hotel.

Sean, have you ridden much of the bike course?  I've been watching video of the course repeatedly while on the trainer.  It is hard to really get a feel for it on the screen though.  I imagine the wind will be as big a factor or more than elevation changes.  What do you think the odds would be of the water being above the limit for a wetsuit?

No I haven't ridden the bike course, and apparently they are changing at least some of it for next year due to road construction or something. I'm doing a HIM in the area in November that is supposedly on the same roads as the full, but I don't know if that's still the case with some of IMTX bike course changing.

My understanding is it's just rolling hills with a lot of chip seal (rough surface). People who have real hills don't think much of these, but for me I'll need to travel a bit to train on them or some like them. It is flat flat flat on my side of town.

It's hit or miss on the water temp. This year we got a warm front a week before the race if I remember correctly and the temps shot up and ended up going over 76 or whatever the limit was. They still allowed people not interested in AG awards to wear their wetsuit and start at the end of the waves. I think a ton of people chose to do that, so keep that in mind. I don't see it being too hot for them to not allow that again.

I am so far behind!  This working during work hours is for the birds!  I haven’t been at my desk most of the week but today can be a catch up day for me (aka, the “install team” is redoing the install process for the third time which means I am waiting for them.  It’s not a good situation and they know it’s not a good situation.  This too shall pass).

My other update, which most of you already know about, is that Kevin and I are getting a golden retriever puppy sometime just after Halloween.  It’ll be a boy. We are working on names.

Sean, you know the Manatee Mantra regarding races under consideration.  DOOO EEET!!!

Steve - thinking of you

Race reports -- DO THEM!  Even if you don't ever make them public.  I have been using mine to research the ever changing conditions for my HIM this weekend.  (10-80% chance of rain with 0.1 to .8 inches expected during the day with a low temperature between 51 and 59 and a high of between 68 and 75 -- basically, they have no idea).  I did my first IM in sleet so it'll be fine but what to wear?  (I know, bring everything and decide in the morning) ARG!

Coach suggested using my road bike because rain + hills + aerobars may not be the best combo and it's not an A race or anything.

I thought my nutrition plan was in the pooper but after looking at my race reports, it's all good.

Guys, I actually went backwards while trying to do a breaststroke kick drill today!
Swim class is on Sunday, so obviously the instructor will be helping with this, but I just had to come say it out loud. I guess for the silver lining, if I work really hard during this class, I may be in the running for the "most improved" award.

Proof of life post.  I finally got medical confirmation that Dr. Internet was right - I did get a concussion.  I'm on "light activity" until I get better.  So no SBR, no reading/TV/phone games, limited computer time, and I'm working 1/2 days.  I still have a constant headache and seeing movement nauseates me.  My typing sucks too so I'm constantly having to go back and edit.  Note to self:  pick up feet when running because whacking my head on the sidewalk is stoopid.  Other than that, things are good.

Puppieeeeeeee!!  Pictures are obligatory, you know.  Such fun with puppy breath, needle-sharp baby teeth, potty training and lots of funny toddler/adolescent doggy moments.

Good luck with your HIM Janyne.  Hopefully the temps will be on the high end of the range for your ride.  Be careful if its wet and have fun.

I should have perfect weather for marathon tomorrow.  It is one of my favorite days of the year.  This will four years in a row at this venue.  Beautiful course in the morning and then huge Oktoberfest celebration until I drop.  Multiple beer halls with polka bands, funny hats, and German beer.

Sounds fun!

I might join a trail 10k race on Sunday. It kinda fits my "plan" for Moab but mostly I just want to do it because it sounds fun.

We have Cider Days this weekend.  Lots of apple-related stuff, including letting people bring their own apples for pressing.  Sunday, there's an opportunity for hard cider tasting from over 40 cideries.  I might have to "make" DH buy some samples (I'm sure he'll resist kicking and screaming ) and take a few sips.  Probably not well advised but at least I'd have a justifiable headache.  Or maybe just another stoopid reason for the one I already have.

Yumm.  That is a lot of ciders to try.  I love apples and the area we are going to this weekend is in the heart of Washington apple country.  You can stop by roadside stands and buy boxes of apples at the orchards that were just picked.  Nothing beats a crisp apple right off the tree.

I've been "stuck" out in the middle of the pool sometimes trying to do this. Some people go backwards with a flutter kick too. You'll get it.

ETA: Oh, I've been lapped at masters while trying br kick too. So they went down, back, and came back around again before I could do down. Good news was that the coach finally believed how difficult it was for me.

I got frustrated with kick drills a long time ago and gave up.  As soon as I loose my momentum from push off the wall I pretty much go nowhere.  My 10 year old son is almost as fast with a kickboard as my free.  I just don't get it.

Marathons, Oktoberfest, 10Ks, HIM and cider festival sounds like a very fun manatee weekend!  I'll be Oktoberfest-ing as well after my 5K on Sunday and hopefully the garlic festival (Eat, Drink, Stink) tomorrow, which is apparently rain or shine.

Good luck one and all!  Race smart and have fun.

It's gonna be an interesting HIM.  Unfortunately I got ill over the last weekend and start of this week, so my training was even more reduced than I had anticipated.  Here are my averages from the past 4 weeks.

It will be an exercise in what the minimum requirements in training are for finishing a HIM.
