I'm having a yard sale. Selling three kid's bikes. One neighbor says "hey sell my kid's bikes, too" so I throw four more on the pile. A second neighbor says "you are selling a lot of bikes, sell my crappy old bike?" I say sure!

He brought down an 80s Schwinn World 10spd. Components look poor, but the frame is certainly large enough for me.

I need a good touring steelie. Is this the thing I need? I told my wife I need it. I probably do, right?

Looks pretty good for an 80's bike. I'd say take it out on a training ride and see how it holds up. If you like it, then congrats!, you have a new bike.

That looks an awful lot like the Schwinn Continental I rode way back in high school.

I heard somewhere that the number of bikes you are suppose to own is defined as N + 1.  So yes, using that formula, you definitely need it!

I look at stuff like that and honestly cringe a little. It looks like a decent bike but, I would want to replace the tires and tubes, likely the cables, chain, that nasty seat, bar tape, certainly needs some pedals, Shifters on the stem - that cant be good- have to relocate to the down tube. All of a sudden the dirt cheap or free bike isnt so cheap anymore.

so you are going to get it right? I know I would.

you forgot brake pads and also the time I'll have to spend taking it all apart and hand buffing every last shiny piece.

I knew I could count on this group to steer me in the direction that I was going to go anyway, lol.

The classic and vintage section of bikeforums.net is a pretty good forum.

You said 10 speed (rather than 12) so that puts it early 80's, the stem shifters and brake levers indicate that it is entry level. I don't know my Schwinn history that well, but they bike was probably built either by Panasonic or Giant by that era.

How much does he want for it? If it is cheap I would get it and build it as and around the neighborhood bike leave the platform pedals so you can use it when you don't want to mess with shoes.

I assume the wheels at 27 inch. You can get kenda k40 for less than 10. Panaracer Palsela are a pretty nice tire and can be had for $25. Another interesting tire you might want to try is the kenda k161 which is a gravel / cross tire less than $15 but would allow you to ride some trails.

The rims might be steel which means heavy, and poor performance in rain. If they are steel you want to get the kool Stop Salmon brake pad.

If the sat for 40 years you are going to want to re lube / grease everything. It can be a fun project. If it has just been sitting most of the parts probably just need cleaned up. Depending an tire choice you can rehab a bike pretty cheap (assuming you do the work yourself.

Look to see if you have a local bike co-op, best place to find cheap parts for old bikes.

Never pass up an excuse to post my vintage bikes. The Giant is too small for me it will be built out for my son.

Well, I do only have ONE fixie...

I really want something to tour with. Friction shifters aren't fancy and I know I my indexed ones need very little maintenance, but friction is great when you don't want to fiddle with stuff.

I really want to be able to ride in a relaxed position and load the sucker down with panniers... But I looked at the dropouts and I think I could definitely fixie convert this pretty easily.

Does the bike have braze ons for a touring rack? I tour pretty light, but I still carry 25-30 lbs of gear if I am camping. You could also look into Old Man Mountain racks.

There's nothing on the front but the back does have some.

Im 6'2" and can barely stand over this thing. I need to go back to that catalog and check out measurements. I have a hard time finding used bikes this big!

I did my first tri season about 35 years ago on a Schwinn Continental.  I used to call it "the tank".

Thanks, Dave! You'll notice no costs were documented in a spreadsheet! That's for a reason! Hahaha

Also, here's the next "free bike" super cool Belgium made bike. More of my wife's size. Already ordered everything it needs. Not gonna even touch that!
