Planning an escape from domestic life for a day and what better way than to spend it cycling? Since my last race I've mostly been weight lifting for gains with an odd 5k run thrown in and 40 mile ride once a week and feel strong. I'm hoping to cycle a hundred miles and am wondering if training is really all that important if this might include leisurely breaks once or twice. I like pushing myself so I don't plan on goofing off the entire time but am curious if I should build up my longer ride beforehand. I was planning on packing a couple bottles with gatorade, a camelbak with water, about 4 gels, a couple trail mix bars and possibly a fruit. For some reason I often crave fruit along with protein and carbs after a couple hours of no nutrition though I plan on snacking once an hour on this ride.

Already doing 40 mile rides weekly, I think do 1-2 in the 65-75 mile range and you'll be fine unless you live in a really flat area and are doing your century in the mountains or vise versa. Best of luck!

My long ride before my first century was 36 miles. If you're in decent shape you can tackle a century, especially if it's a leisurely ride with the occasional stop.

I recommend you do 100 miles.
Fewer than 100 miles it won't count as a Century.
And I think that by the time you get to 100 you will have had enough.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Don't you only need 62.1 miles for a Century in Canada?

That would get you just a bit short. It's 62.137 miles...

To answer the OP, as long as you're staying well within your limits, not digging into your reserves, and eating and drinking a lot, 100 miles will just be a long day for you. Go for it.

(and intentionally bonking once in a long while is a great training tool)

Thank you for the replies. Unfortunately, I was not able to make more training rides but one 47 mile ride and continued did a couple 30 mile rides. It was an enjoyable attempt with an interesting new trail to explore but around mile 45 I wasn't feeling so fresh and had some burning in my legs. By mile 68 I had an occasional twitch in one of my calves. At mile 76 my hamstring completely cramped up causing me to get off the bike and stretch 2 minutes. I then completed 8 more miles flipping into a very low gear to work out the cramp for 10 minutes then back to the normal gear until I would start cramping again in 10 minutes. It was fun. Maybe next time.

84 miles is a good day in the saddle. If you still want to go for it, let those miles work into your legs and give it another go.

Glad you are ok. I personally wouldn't want to do a century ride unless my previous long ride was 75 miles with some 30 mile mid week rides. Now you know that are mortal and need to train a bit more than some of the strong bikers in the crowd. Rest up and train well for your next ride and I am sure you will do fine.

Soon after I got married, I decided I needed to get motivated to work out and focus on getting back into shape. I could barely jog a quarter-mile without needing a walk break.

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.
