Beat USC!

I was a band geek at Notre Dame High School in L.A. in the 80s (but a cool band geek, drummer, played the quads ), and we were the "travelling" Notre Dame band for this game when it was at the Coliseum, so we got to sit on the field for the games.  This was during the Irish's huge winning streak, leading to the joke in the early 90s:

Guy walks into a bar with his dog, says "I'll wager a free beer my dog can sing the fight song of the winner of the Notre Dame USC game."  "You're on," says the barkeeper.  Dog proceeds to sing the Notre Dame fight song.  "Impressive, can he sing Fight On?"  "Nope, he's only 13 years old"

If both teams could lose, I'd be a happy man.

Since one has to win, I guess I'd like it to be ND.

Rock on with your band geek self.  Sousaphone playa here.  At my high school, when the tubas and drum line threw a party together, it was off the heezy.

I live less than a mile from the ND campus. I love to do my runs through campus, and I swim there too. My favorite team!  I hope they beat USC, and they have a pretty good shot. I hope after that drubbing they put on Army they aren't complacent.

I'm really conflicted about this one.

Normally the only time I cheer for USC is when they play ND.

However, if both look really bad and ND squeaks out a really ugly win (like with ten fumbles, eight interceptions, stupid play-calling - that sort of thing), then it probably helps the Gators in the BCS.

At least we don't have to listen to NBC's "homer" announcing crew raving about  f***ing Brady Quinn all night.

Mark

Chris -- I went to Harvard High School (back in the good old days before they let in those strange people, aka women, into the hallowed halls)...but I don't care about rooting for Harvard University!

Notre Dame is going to be exposed for the fraud they are. They should have lost to Mich St. They have guaranteed wins every year from the likes of Air Force, Navy, Stanford, etc. They don't want to share any of their TV money.

And their coach had to resort to stomach surgery to lose weight! How about working his arse off like all his players do to get in good shape?!

Fight on!

THIS is an argument against Notre Dame?  I expect more from esteemed USC grads - --errrrr, wait a minute, no I don't.  where's tyrant when you need a good edemucated Trojan?

well, the fat lady hasn't sung, but it sure is an inauspicious start.  I'm reservng judgment until the final whistle (or the score is 49-3, whichever comes first)  Man, it sucks being a Trojan hater these days

Go Buckeyes!

There is still UCLA to topple. Not a given. UCLA would love nothing more than to beat SC and kick them out. They have an extra week of rest.

But then again, they are UCLA.

Pulling for a team is different than picking them to win.

LSU moves from 9th to 5th in the AP, could chance for a BCS bowl, but probably can't finish much higher than that.

Not many people care to see a repeat game. Sorry. And you should have to win your conference to play in the championship game.

Florida's out of conference schedule is pathetic. Western Florida? Whose next. The University of Devry Fighting Computer Geeks?

I am always concerned about rivalry games. UCLA would love nothing better than to knock USC out. I went to the UCLA-USC game two years ago and I was surprised how much it felt like a road game for USC. I will probably just watch it on TV this year. I am running a half-marathon the next day.

Fight on!

Nearly as pathetic as USC's IN-conference schedule.

Word. Florida has had two easy non-conference games and a schedule full of tough as hell conference games. Even the "easy' SEC games are brutal. Spurrier facing his old club at his old stadium? And don't even call FSU an easy N/C game. FSU and Bowden at Doak Campbell against the hated Gators? That's disaster waiting to happen.

USC has had a schedule full of easy Pac-10 games, losing to the equivalent of Florida's Western Carolina game. Oregon State? Puhleeze!

Strength of schedule kills Florida. The humans and computers say so.

USC played Nebraska, Notre Dame and Arkansas. All top 25 teams.

Lets see Florida beat up on Arkansas next week and then we will talk some more (and we need to see USC beat up on UCLA).

Michigan has more of a case. Problem there is that nobody wants to see a repeat game.

This is the system we have.

No, you say so. Doesn't make it true. Last information I saw had USC top in SoS in 3 of the computers and Florida at the top in two. Per that article, the sixth doesn't use SoS.

Here's another article that tells how close the two teams' SoS actually are:

Florida has endured a schedule that the N.C.A.A. ranks as the most difficult in terms of cumulative record by opponent. That may be a rudimentary method of gauging the strength of a schedule, especially considering that if the Division I-AA Western Carolina game counted in Florida’s ranking, the Gators would be No. 11. Still, the Gators are tied with U.S.C. for having played the most bowl-eligible teams: 10.

Wow, three whole top 25 teams.  The problem is that the computers don't know their from a hole in the ground.  You get strength of schedule points from playing a bunch of mediocre teams in your own conference and a couple of good ones out of conference.  You can have the #1 SOS by playing a bunch of #40-60 teams and never be challenged by a single one of them, while another team can play several top ranked teams in addition to cupcakes and have a legitimate shot at losing.

Who is the PAC 10 is worth a flip other than USC?
