A SIN??? He's the one that forgot his ride. Absolutely no reason why he should not speak to you....so there is no reason why you can't get your ride..........just don't let him drive if yours is up on the roof. Good luck with the insurance payment. OUCH! |

LOL - he is being MUCH nicer about it than I would have been When we first put the racks on the roof, I said to him that one of us was going to do this and that we need to make a sign to hang on the garage door every time we take a bike out. I made it this afternoon |

Extreme Veteran 387 Columbus, Ohio | Subject: RE: I committed a sin today... Happened to me. Had the bike on the roof and forgot it was up their. Then heard the crunch. Luckly only bent the rim in half. Nothing to the frame. Now to remember I hang the bent rim on the inside of the garage door so when I open it, it's there to remind me of the cargo on the roof. |

Sorry to hear that, good luck with Insurance. I think my homeowners policy would cover the bike up to $1k, and my auto policy would cover replacement costs. I know with no hesitation, I'd use my auto policy (and I'd make sure I'd replace it with a really nice bike...) |

I made it this afternoon No reason to advertize to thieves as well that you carry stuff up there (usually a decent sign you have good stuff in the garage and/or house. Secure a cheap mirror, angled down to the end of the driveway. So when you pull up, you will see the roof at least 4 feet before doing damage and the low angle of the mirror will keep people from constantly checking out their O-SO-COOL do every time they pass by. Besides, sounds likes you had already warned him some time ago. |

I've always had the impression that if you use homeowners for anything other than catastrophic damage to your home, they'll drop you like a hot potato. This is very true. Do not use your homeowners. I didn't know any better when I had a water pipe bust and fill my basement. Small claim maybe 600 bucks. A year later a tree fell on my house so I had to use it again. I moved and absolutely NOBODY would give me homeowners insurance because I had 2 claims within a 3 year period. They cycle off after 3 years. I ended up having to pay triple the norm from some company. Insurance is one of the biggest scams out there. But that is for another thread Sorry about the bike. |

Naw, it just depends on what company you are with. I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, and I know there will be as many "bad" stories about my insurance company, but I'd rate my insurance company as a 10/10. Not to mention company names, but I have been a "good neighbor" for about two decades now, and have had MANY claims, probably at least 1 every 18-24 months with them, one even a complete total of household goods at about $45k. My rates have not gone up once, and I pay $390/year for homeowners on a $250k house, and several "extras/extra limits" riders (ie. Too much for electronics or jewlery or guns or stuff like that) on it. I also have an umbrella with my car/house liability. With full coverage on 3 cars and a new boat, and the house, I believe we pay $112/mo. total. |

Champion 8766 Evergreen, Colorado | Subject: RE: I committed a sin today... Ugh. I did that last summer not even 3 months after I'd first had a garage EVER. My trick now is to take the automatic door opener remote off the visor when the bike is on the roof. I stick it in the glove box. Takes TWO seconds...literally. When I reach up for it and it isn't there and I think, "Why did I take the remote down" I immediately think "Oh yeah...that's why." My car insurance would not cover the bike. They covered the car and the rack (which was all but destroyed) but not the garage or the bike. Their rational was that the bike was not part of the car but the rack was. The damage to the garage and bike came out to what my deductible on my homeowners would have been anyway, so I just paid for it. Luckily it was my OLD sturdy bike and I really only destroyed the front brakes. Let me tell you...bike handlebars stuck between the garage door and the front wall of the house and a bike suspended in mid-air...some funny shizel if you don't realize what you've just done long enough to have a good laugh about it. I guess I timed it just right that I was driving in as the door was still going up so the handlebars got stuck right inbetween. It was SO hard ot get back out of there! |

Extreme Veteran 438 | Subject: RE: I committed a sin today... We have a sticky note on the garage door opener all year round that says... "Where is the BIKE"? That way whenever I go to puch the button I have to stop and move the sticky note and think about it. I guess it is a little late for you now. I wish you all the best with repairs and claims and such. That is a huge bummer! |

Master 1362 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: I committed a sin today... Bummer!!! Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you will both get over it though and have a funny story to tell years from now (I hope). I had a friend that pulled in with a roof rack and accidentally hit the garage door button again just as she was entering the garage. She freaked when it hit the top of her truck and hit the gas. Ripped the garage door off the tracks and everything.

Champion 6285 Beautiful Sonoma County | Subject: RE: I committed a sin today... A couple of years ago at the Wildflower Tri, a bunch of people were camped out and up drives a car with bikes on the roof. As the car drives around looking for a spot to camp, a bunch of the campers jump up and start waving and pointing at the bikes and yelling. The driver looks at them all funny and keeps driving... right under a low-hanging branch of an oak tree and smashes both bikes. I bet it wasn't a fun race for either of those two people in the car... since they had to watch it instead of race it.
We have our bike rack on the back and I always worry about backing into something or being rear-ended in traffic. Your husband seems like a very sweet and understanding man. |

Expert 997 North Central WV | Subject: RE: I committed a sin today... Well it sounds as though I have joined an elite club You all make me feel much more, ummm, normal It is our first house with a garage and my husband has never had roof racks before (he has a truck). But I will consider the advise to put hubby on the roof next time The damage to the bike doesn't appear to be that bad. The bike was jammed between the car and the door frame and we had to let all of the air out of the car tires to get the bike out. The aero bars are ripped to shreds as is his computer. But nothing else looks bad. We are not sure if there are any stress fractures but he thinks the frame is bent. We need to take it to a bike doctor. The rack that it was on is bent quite severely and there is some damage to the house where the bike impacted it. It could have been a lot worse. I am not sure if the insurance company will replace it unless the bike shop can write it off due to a stressed frame. I am waiting to hear back from my insurance lady to find out if car or homeowners is the way to go.

This year I switched to a car and no longer need a hitch so I am shopping for a rack. I was sure it was going to be a roof rack till now. I suffer from CRS - Can't Remember Sh**. So who do I trust more, the other guy/gal not rearending me or me forgeting a bike is on top? I will be getting a trunk rack. |

Subject: RE: I committed a sin today... Sorry to hear about the bike and I know this is kind of like the barn door with the horse already out in the field, A suggestion regarding the remote is to put it in the trunk when the rack goes on the car. Hope all turns out ok on the insurance front. Edited by crusevegas 2007-02-13 1:37 AM |

Champion 4902 Ottawa, Ontario | Subject: RE: I committed a sin today... Merde! A P3 .... that is just too awful! It is terrible about the insurance company, but as someone pointed out, insurance is a scam. It really pays off when a major catastophe happens, like a house fire or a flood. You can, however, get additional coverage just for bikes. I pay an extra $100 per year and my bikes, including all attachements, shoes, helmet, etc are replaced in case of theft or damage. |
