Here's a pic of what happened to a friend of mine.  She was driving the SUV which the bike rack used to be attached to.

Looking at the picture before reading the text, I thought "GEEZ! That's a weird (and probably highly illegal), way of hauling your bikes!" - DOH!

Here's a pic of what happened to a friend of mine.  She was driving the SUV which the bike rack used to be attached to.  Good news was that the bikes were all A-OK, but the entire hitch/rack was toasted.  The little car definitely got the worst of it.

In BC, ICBC (our provincial insurance company) will cover damage to the bikes if they are injured in car-car accident.  A couple years ago I was rear ended - no bikes but the rack was on the car - and they covered my car repair + new hitch/rack.  I'm not sure if they would pay if you backed into a wall.

Excellent!!!!

Machiavelo - 2007-02-13 5:49 AM Merde!  A P3 .... that is just too awful!  It is terrible about the insurance company, but as someone pointed out, insurance is a scam.  It really pays off when a major catastophe happens, like a house fire or a flood.  You can, however, get additional coverage just for bikes.  I pay an extra $100 per year and my bikes, including all attachements, shoes, helmet, etc are replaced in case of theft or damage.

Flood, homeowners don't pay no stinkin flood claims.

Insurance companies/agents are just like any other business, there are good ones and there are one's that aren't so good. The time to do your due dillegence when insurance shopping is when you are buying it, not filing a claim.

but I have been a "good neighbor" for about two decades now, and have had MANY claims, probably at least 1 every 18-24 months with them, one even a complete total of household goods at about $45k. My rates have not gone up once, and I pay $390/year for homeowners on a $250k house, and several "extras/extra limits" riders (ie. Too much for electronics or jewlery or guns or stuff like that) on it. I also have an umbrella with my car/house liability. With full coverage on 3 cars and a new boat, and the house, I believe we pay $112/mo. total.

frantical manic hijack--WTF do you live???  My insurance went up 1300 starting next April on a 95K house not even 1200 square feet 40 miles away from the coast and waay above sea level considering....  and I pay 4,000 in homeowners and two cars (one full, one partial POS) is $ 450/6months.   My escrow payment is double my actual principal and interest payment.  sheesh....

They do when the flood is caused by the sewers backing up.  That happened to us about 10 years ago.  The basement was filled with 4 feet of water and caused extensive damage.  The insurance company paid to have the basement walls stripped down, disinfected and rebuild.  All furniture and other items that were damaged by the water were replaced.   It did not cost us a penny and our insurance did not go up.

I'm in central Indiana. I'm with the "Fire and Casualty" division for their company, which is the low risk group (ie - costs less - higher coverage limits), though I am not quite so sure how I managed that one. If I have a problem, I actually have my agent's home phone, cell phone, beeper, etc, and he sent an adjuster to my house on a Sunday AM to write me a check in the past. If your agent is not willing to go all out for you, or if you don't even know your agents name (and he know your name), find a new company. I've got all my insurance with him, aside from health insurance, and I've referred many people to him, and they all seem to love him.

agreed.
i am an agent in california, the people who cry the most during a claim are the people who cry the most for their bill every month. you can buy cheap, or you can buy good. (in my experience) that being said, i'm very glad you're being taken car of tjtryon. my advice to everyone, find a LOCAL agent and get familiar with them.

now, i hope everything happens ok with the bike. i remember one time my dad had a rack with 10 mtb on a 15passenger van and it went flying on the freeway. homeowners paid it all.

That is not a "flood" by insurance definitions, back up of sewer and/or drains is a covered peril under mos HO policies.

Aways worried about remembering the bike was on top of the car so got a hitch mounted bike rack...

Then promptly backed into a palm tree destroying my trek.
