Subject: BQ Race in March, April, or May

I have two buddies who have been training to beat the old guy (55-59) qualifying time for Boston of 3:45, and were/are planning on making a run for it this Sunday in New Orleans. Problem is, temps are supposed to be in the mid-70s, maybe a little to warm to PR, much less BQ. They plan to assess where they are at the halway point and at mile 18, and will bail if the heat is getting to them. Thus they are looking for a fallback marathon over the next three months, should they have to abort. Anything come to mind from you guys?

Usual criteria, pancake flat and a high probability of conducive weather (temps in the 40s or 50s).

RnR is a net downhill race with temps typically in the 60s and very low humidity. First weekend in June.

Shamrock Marathon is March 18th in Virginia Beach.  Not too warm, pretty flat course.  It's a nice race.

You've been reading the TNT propaganda again, haven't you? Have you run R'n'R? Look at the elevation chart, net downhill doesn't mean "no climbing," much less "flat as a pancake." Those two downhills at the start wreaked havoc on my quads.

There were also some heavily cambered stretches when I ran it, took their toll on my knees.

This one in late April qualifies as flat, but maybe towards the higher end of your temp range as far as averages go--low 60s may be more typical for highs that time of year: http://www.njmarathon.org/

NOT flat:

Is the course flat or hilly?

It has long stretches that are flat with some hills and most difficulty coming between mile 12 and 20.

Another vote for Shamrock

It is as flat as your going to get.

A friend of mine is going to this race for a BQ Attempt also

The whole race is along the water front and one wild card is going to be wind and/or weather.

Bear...if you can narrow down your question a bit, you'll get better hits.  If weather is the only factor, it's not too hard to find a marathon.  Flat?  How Flat?  Travel distance?  Net downhill?  Windy?  Number of runners?

I also recommend Shamrock, because it's pancake flat (elevation changes of +/- 3 feet).  RW and a friend of mine claim it's very fast, but you have to be willing to run 26 miles of exceptionally flat.  Some people go slower out of boredom...

I was also going to toss out Glass City (Toledo), in early April.  It meets your weather criteria, and it was cited on RW and Marthon Maniacs by multiple people as flat and fast.  Plus, it's only 1000 runners strong, so the crowd factor is low.  I couldn't find an elevation / profile.

This is a pretty flat one on 3/11 but it just closed. Maybe the RD has a wait list? It's a small marathon so maybe they'd be happy with some out-of-towners...

Keep in mind your talking about central Texas. What they consider a hill wouldn't qualify in most areas of the country.

I would be more concerned about the temp in Dallas on April 1. It could easily be way to hot.

Go back and read the OP. I put down the only criteria that matters: pancake flat and cool weather. None of the other stuff matters, nor have I shot down any suggestions that didn't meet other criteria.

If a race director identifies his race as having hills and eight miles of "some difficulty" you can bet it's not flat.

Napa will probably come up at some point.

It is a net downhill (Just under 400 to just above Sea Level) with a few notable bumps early in the race. (check out the course profile)

The weather really sucked last year (Windy and Rainy) but I have had a few friends bag a BQ here. The best part is that you cannot beat the destination; especially if a post race celebration is in order.

This may or may not fit.  Cleveland May 20th?  Average high temp for that day is 65 (usually high temps are at 3-4pm in the afternoon though) and average low temp is 50 degrees.  Usually the weather in Cleveland in May is cold and crappy.  Although there was a record high 3 years ago (in the 80's), so possible, but not probable.

Hills mostly consist of highway overpasses.  I can't say specifically it is flat as a pancake.  Probably isn't, and while it's been awhile since I have tooled around in downtown Cleveland, I always remember it being flat.  I do know from reading marathon guide that quite a few people mentioned they PR'd there.

NJ is flat as a pancake (unlike other races that say they are, this one really is).  It's very well organized with great aid stations, pacers to get runners to goal times, including the usual BQ times.  While it can be in the 60s, the race never goes further than about 3/4 of a mile from the ocean, so that will keep things feeling cooler.  It's a very fast course and I know at least a couple of people that got to Boston for the first time on that course.   Let me know if you have any questions about that race.

That part of jersey is definitely flat. The whole area is just filled marsh and sandbars. The temperature that time of year should be pretty good, maybe a little chilly if wind is blowing.

JohnnyKay - 2007-02-27 2:56 PM So how did the "old guys" do?

One of 'em called it quits at the halfway point, is now weighing the alternatives for the next month or so. The other continued on, only to lock up around Mile 20, finished nearly an hour over his goal.

C'est la vie.

http://www.mississaugamarathon.com/  Not pancake flat, but net downhill.  Doesn't look like quad burners though.  Doesn't really meet your criteria 100% but thought I'd toss it in in case anyone else was looking for a downhiller.

Does any marathon count as a BQ, or do they specifically have to state as much in their advertisement?  I was under the assumption that only certain marathons acted as official BQ events.

Pesronally, I think "pancake flat" is a little overrated. I agree with the moderate temperature requirement 100%, but having a few hills in there is probably a good way mix up just how the muscles are being used.

I don't think any of my PR's are on a pancake flat course. My marathon PR was in Nashville (country music) in 2003, back when there were more hills, especially in the last 6 miles.

Yeah, the seventeen fastest marathons in history were run at Berlin, London and Chicago DESPITE those courses being pancake flat.

Cool

I am planning to do the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach on March 18th to get a BQ.  I need a time of 3:50 (F40-44).  I ran my first marathon on Feb. 17th with a time of 3:52:27 (just missing the BQ time).  So I am trying again at the Shamrock.  It is suppose to be very flat (except for one small bridge).  I think the only thing that may be a factor is wind.  I understand it was pretty windy last year.

Good luck to your buddies!
