Subject: Kayaking builds strength...right?

I bought a couple of kayaks yesterday and the wife isn't very thrilled about it.  I tried explaining that kayaking is an excellent CORE workout and builds GREAT arm strength for swimming.  I'm trying to convince her that they're triathlon training gear, which makes the purchase easier to swallow.

Anyone out there give me some ammo to go back to her with?  Do any of you own kayaks or train with them?  Any benefits?

Help a brother out.

Hell.
I was afraid it would come to this.

I don't want to lie to her any more than I have.  All I need to say to her is....."The people on BT said kayaks are GREAT for triathlon training."

Lara - 2007-03-28 1:53 PM I was sitting at a stop light drooling over a Kyak in the window at REI this morning...

Lara, you're in a win/win situation. Buy the kayak AND get yourself a Nordie's gift card.

I got your back, you know that...

...as long as you don't return them on the way to the gym to use the rowing machine.

( For those unaware, this is the guy that bought a high end spin bike for his basement.  Day one he brags how cool it is.  The next day he logged how much he hated it, and as bike purist he can't lower himself to using this dreadful piece of g-bage.  Following day he returns the bike on his way to SPIN CLASS!

I don't kayak, but I do canoe as often as possible.
It is great core and upper body cross training.

I canoe so that the wife and I can travel together, and we can take the dogs and other gear.
I find it both fun and relaxing.

I even do the odd canoe race, the next one scheduled for Apr 22.
You should see the odd looks we get when we load our 2 dogs into the canoe for a race.
It's a 100lbs extra weight, but the dogs love it, and most people can't believe we bring them.

Warning: Swimming and kayaking will lead to a love of the water, which might lead you to sailing which can be very addictive, and very expensive. Don't ask how I know.

That was another argue point with the wife.  I had my first adventure race coming up this weekend but got bumped from the team.  One of the members of a 3-person team had an inflatable kayak (junk).  Now, if I do any future races I have the real deal.

Another argument I came up with is the fact I can assist in group open water swim sessions.

See....I think I'll win her over eventually.

Big canoers here, too, and right you are...it's such a great workout, as a matter of fact,  that I refuse to paddle.  My husband accepts my self designation as 'canoe hostess' because then I have much more energy for when he wants the occasional...um....rest stop.

My mind is still reeling over the fact that if she thinks it is for triathlon training she'll be more ok with it?

Huh?  Bringing up one more tri-related expense is going to get me a night on the couch (we call it "camping".

If I came home with a kayak I think my wife would say "Thank God that's over, how much can we get for your bike?"

Love love love kayaking! Good arm and core strength builder and a lot of fun to boot.
What kind did you get? - Touring? Whitewater? A bit of both?

Man... I left my beloved 'yak in Georgia, but it's in storage waiting for my return.

Forgot: Now you can also volunteer for water safety for races you're not doing! That's an extra tri benefit!
