Swim
Comments: This was a good swim. I chose to start on the inside, near the front, and was able to stake out some territory for myself. A few bumps here and there, nothing bad. Shaved the first turn nice and close, then hit some traffic. I drifted a bit to the left to get clear water and stayed out there. Rounding the last buoy I had clear water ahead, and a good line on the beach. Kicked hard to get the legs going, and was able to do several dolphins as the water got shallow. Came out running strong. What would you do differently?: I tend to drift left a little bit, so I added just a bit on the back leg. Nothing bad, though. Transition 1
Comments: T1 is always breathless and hard. Tried to keep smooth and relaxed. Overall pretty good T1. I had a long run with the bike since I was near the entrance. Had 7th best T1 in my age group. Bike
Comments: This was a great bike for me. I watched my cadence, and downshifted whenever I started drifting below 85. This kept my revs up really well. Had some nice long stretches where I could really go hard, and the hills gave me a nice opportunity to sit up and get a drink. I passed lots of people from the earlier waves -- good because it gave me incentive, bad because many of them tended to ride too far to the left. No big problems though. What would you do differently?: I needed more fluids on the bike. One small bottle of Powerbar Endurance wasn't quite enough. A little plain old water would have been nice to go with it. Also lost the gel I was going to have near the end -- must have fallen out of my pocket. Transition 2
Comments: Smooth, no worries. 11/35 in AG. Run
Comments: The first 3/4 mile or so was uphill, so a bit of a grind. ~8:30 for the first mile, but then picked it up. Strong finish on the downhill. What would you do differently?: Thirsty! Maybe have a bottle ready in T2, just in case. Post race
Warm down: Walked and snacked. Had a beer with my coach (thanks Debi!) What limited your ability to perform faster: I performed to my current fitness level -- I'm very pleased. Event comments: Nice job by SetUp Events. Always fun! Last updated: 2007-01-16 12:00 AM

Up at 6:30. Bagel with peanut butter, a little fruit and cottage cheese, and coffee. Got dressed (tri gear with shorts and t-shirt layered on top, crocs), racked my bike, threw my bag in and took off at 7:30. Drive over took a little longer than I wanted (forgot the map), but arrived around 9. Grabbed my gear and headed over to check in. SetUp Events did a nice job as usual, and things were well organized. Registered, chipped, and marked by 9:15. Got an end spot on the rack at the transition area and set up shop.
Slipped into my wetsuit and hit the beach. Water temperature was a concern, but it had warmed up to 56 by race time, so it was perfectly tolerable, even in a sleeveless suit. Did about 3 short swims, alternating with warming time on the beach.
