Great advices. When i meant 3 days i didnt want to sound like I'm lazy. I want to apply the same phylosophy I used before in bodybuilding. It is not the time that u train that matters is the quality of the training. I'm just starting on this.

Raul

Quality training definitely matters, almost certainly more than quantity of training. But quantity plays a role too...you could run one perfect mile, but if you can only go one mile, chances are you won't win a 10k.

On another note, I'll be the next in line to welcome you to BT! It's a great source, a fantastic resource and a great social club. Read up, you'll learn quick. Best of luck!

My body is very symmetric.

Legs are as big or bigger than my upper body.
Core muscle one of my strongest are i dont know if it matters(abs, lower back, flexores).!!

Core is good and important. According to Chi running most of your running should be used with your core muscles while letting the others be nice and loose

Funny I am like you but the opposiste. I coming from endurance for the last couple of years and think about adding in some strength training. Mine is from the need to drop weight and hopely look better than I will. I am not worried about being competitve and I will be just fine if I can find myself in the middle of the pack. Back of the pack is fun but I want out.

What it's going to boil down to if you're going to do a tri yet want to continue lifting and maintaining as much mass as possible, is you will have to pay very close attention to fatigue and nutrition.

I've done two triathlons, a sprint and one between sprint and OLY distance and for both I continued to lift three times per week hitting all muscle groups but legs (figured they were getting hammered on the runs and bike). I also swam, biked and ran three times per week which kept my schedule full. It also had me tired most of the time which I now know was in part to training in the wrong HR zone as well as not eating enough of the right foods.

You shouldn't lose a tremendous amount of mass if you continue to lift while training for a tri however you will have some limitations with endurance which is the tradeoff that you will have to live with.

Once you have done one or a few, then you will know if you want to keep doing triathlons with weights part of the equation or if you want to drop the muscle and spend all your efforts on triathlon.

There's no wrong answer, just what you want to do.

There's a dude who races up here in Chicagoland who used to be a powerlifter/wrestler and now is a scary fast triathlete.  His webpage is mytriathlonfamily.com and he has a whole "about me" section with his stats.  The guy is scary fast.

Checked out his Web page. He only weighs a buck-32 and benches 350. He has some serious strength-to-weight in his favor.

Yes.  That bench press clearly makes him a fast runner.  Wink

FWIW, power-to-weight is important on the run and when climbing on a bike.  For most triathlons that have relatively flat bike courses, though, raw power (and aerodynamics) is more important (weight doesn't play much of a role).  So if your squatting prowess really carried over to the bike, you'd be pretty fast out of the gate even at 225.

At 195 lbs. I tend to resent those little "cycling types" who seem to float up the hills as they pass me.  Going uphill on the bike useless weight will be your enemy.  If people spend $5,000 on a bike to be 2 lbs. lighter then dropping weight that doesn't contribute to speed means something!

Some people here are firmly middle of the pack (MOP) performers and workout 5 to 12 times per week.  But we live by the one thing you wrote that I really really like. "try to get better every day".  More than anything else, this seems to be the best place for you to start from.

Like someone else said, you're young, don't overthink it.  Have fun and get a little better everyday.  In time you will find if you want to do what it will take to become faster.

And welcome to the best site on the web.

A few issues. One, you'll begin to miss lifting. If you're lucky you may be able to get one in per week (unless you don't have a job, then lift all you want). Two, you will get a lot of compliments from women on your muscles, as they are passing you. Three, forget about getting streamlined in the swim, while most swimmers can squeeze their ears between their biceps, you'll be lucky to get your arms over your head. Fourth, get ready to sink in the pool. Also, don't wear your posing trunks as a swim suit, my wife still won't let me forget about that one.

Yeah, he's freakishly strong, but he is unbelievably fast.  You should see his bike and aero helmet, they had a thread with them on slowtwitch a few weeks ago...beautiful.

Because of your competitive mindset, this is going to sound strange, but... for your first year, it might be best to build your aerobic base by training at lower intensity levels for longer distances, especially if you want to do longer-than-sprint races later.

Some good news for you:  at 22, you have coupla years in your Age Group.  Since fewer people ages 20-24 get into tri, you will have a chance to dominate your AG next year.    It's among the slighly older brackets -for example, Men 35-39, that all heck breaks loose.  There's simply more competition.

Finally, I'd recommend volunteering at a race or two, if you have time.  It helps you see what goes on, and gives you a chance to "give back" to what will soon become your new addiction.

Welcome to tri, and WELCOME to BT!  I look forward to following your successes.

jeasus, i was missing for a few days and this debate starts.
sorry mike,i would have been straight in behind you ,had i spotted this thread.

well, im still lifting 3 times a week, and tri raining aswell.

squat bench deadlift, swim bike run.

but i must admit , im not working this year, and that is a big factor. no way could i keep down a 9 to 5 with my training regime.

to do both you got to get medeival baby.

tip.
when your legs are wasted from running, and you have to squat, squat with youe legs close together, rather than the typical power squat.
you use less weight, but at least your squatting with out pain.

i will do the iron man and be able to squat 200kg bench 135.kg deadlift 230 ish.at 80kgs raw and drugfree.
it just that i will take me 15 hours.
