Subject: pre-event massages worth it ?

am debating whether to get a massage before my HIM this Saturday . From my reading it seems like there is definite benefit from a massage post-event but not so sure pre-event .

Its my first HIM and I want to be as prepped as possible . Am thinking of getting it tomorrow or worst case Thursday . That way I should have enough time to "recover" before my event.

Have not been regularly getting massages so not sure if it will help or have an adverse effect . any opinions ?

I amost always do Pre-Race Massages before longer distance "A" races. (Especially Marathons)

I usually get mine in the 2nd week of a 3 week taper and it does help me a great deal. (As does a Post-Race Massage)

The key is to let them know that you will be doing an endurance event and when.

They always told me to drink tons of water afterward because the massage will free up a lot of toxins that need to be flushed from the body. This may or may not be true but drinking lots of water during taper is always a good thing.

I have a pretty agressive taper and usually carry quite a bit of fatigue into the 2nd week and so the benefits are probably magnified a bit.

Not sure how much scientific evidence there is out there about the benefits of pre-race massages but it sure seems to help both physically and mentally.

FWIW: Most of my Marathon Friends swear by Pre-Race Massages and this is where I learned about them.

My routine is to get a massage on Thurs, before a Sun race. I also visit the Chiropractor on the Thurs.
