Subject: Tri-Tat

This forum has recently seen a conversation about whether to wear a t-shirt for participating in a relay, so in that spirit, I pose the following question:

Since the M-dot tat seems to be a badge of honor proudly worn by many Ironman finishers, is one allowed to have a 1/2 m-dot affixed to one's skin upon completion of a HIM?

Discuss.

mmm. not sure, but if you were you would only be allowed half a tat or maybe the outline and only half of it filled in.

Allowed? Sure! Though in my opinion, I would rather have a 70.3 tat as opposed to a half m-dot. Too bad HIMs don't have their own logo.

I really like that idea. It's like a promise ring. You get 1/2 now, 1/2 when you do the full IM.
That ain't half bad!

Not sure what you mean by half an ironman tat, but I really like the idea of a 70.3 tat....it would be a great conversation piece :-)

I'm planning on doing my first HIM distance next year and then IMFL the following. I'm only going to do the half distance. If I complete it in the alotted time I'm going to get a tattoo of only HALF of the IM dot since I only did a HIM. Something I have wanted for a long time.

a 70.3 tattoo could look cool.   I know someone on this website that has 26.2 on her foot.

140.6,  70.3, 101,  50K, 26.2     (it could look pretty cool if done right)

I like the idea of getting the outline of the M-dot after an HIM and the rest filled in after a full IM.

Fill in the .5 with red when you do the full IM. Of course all of the white areas will be bare skin..

I know someone on this website that has 26.2 on her foot.

I'm trying to talk her into getting a 112 on her hip and a 2.4 on her wrist.

That would be awesome!

See, that's what I'm talking about.  I was actually thinking of literally only 1/2 of the M-dot, but I'm computer graphics challenged and can't post a picture.  Maybe one of you whizz bang mac users could post the M-dot sliced down the middle.  But, having the outline and only a portion filled in is definitely motivation, and a conversation piece.

I thought about the 1/2 M-dot but I think I like the whole thing with only half filled in better. I also like the idea of a 70.3. Someone head to Miami Ink and get it done

To better facilitate the completion of the m-dot, it would probably be safer to do the whole outline with half-filled in.  However, then it might just looked striped.  But I'm not so sure about the other option either...

I'm thinking instead of the .5 in the dot, write 70.3 in there.    Don't know if someone could match the ink color that well 2 years later though.

Or, as one of my female friends says...when/if I complete my first HIM, I will officially be a "half man".

Mind you I still have trouble referring to some of my female training companions who have completed Ironman races...I always catch myself saying Ironman women....hmmm. What's in a name, or a tat, for that matter.

Would the tatoo artist be able to match the color when filling in the second half? I also like the 70.3 idea

It would be hard, and chances are that they would have to fill in the whole thing over again (so basically a touch up on the completed side. Especially for triathletes that are often in the sun, it would be exceptionally difficult to match the color (even if you did black). Fading happens with tattoos, especially with sun exposure

Things are shaping up.  I like the full outline and either 1/2 filled in or ** new idea ** a 70.3 inside the blank outline.  If/when the IM is completed, the 70.3 can be colored over, left intact as a reminder of which came first or you just get a new, full M-dot on the other leg (or wherever you're going to put it).   Kind of like a fund-drive, when the icon is full, you've achieved your goal.

I can't figure out how to burn this in to make it look real, but you get the general idea.
