Bump since it is April now, and getting closer.

I am still watching the standby list rotate, have moved a good bit the last two weeks. I don't hope any bad juju on those that are already registered, but if those that aren't committed to the race would drop out tomorrow, I would be happy.

I'll know more once I get settled on a wetsuit...got an Xterra Vortex 2 last week, but--after a trial ocean swim Saturday--I have to send it back for the next size up. Major drag.

Other than that though, I mostly just have to build the bike miles. I've already got a 2000 yd pool swim and a marathon under my belt this year, but my longest ride to date is 41 miles.

I may need to get a new wetsuit soon, mine is baggy on me since I've lost weight. I spend Dec-Mar working very hard on my bike and run.  Lots of 50+ rides and tempo runs.

I just started swimming again last week and feels pretty good. I've been doing 2000 yard workouts no problem.

I have a 2:00/30 brick tomorrow and then yoga class. :D

Don't stress about a wetsuit, the water is usually pretty warm.  I did this race last year as well as 4 swims in the river during the weeks leading up to the race day.  When I had a sleeveless on, I was overheating!  Some people that had full wetsuits on during the practice swims and removed them.  There have been some years where wetsuits were not legal, just something to keep in mind.  Happy training.

I'm in the same boat. My running endurance is great (though lately I think I am fighting ITBS) and I think my swimming is coming around. If only I could consistently put in 80-100 mile weeks on the bike....

By what I have been reading so far, sounds like people are doing fine.  I was sweatin out water temp/wetsuit legal situation last year, cause I knew I needed my suit cause my center of balance in the water SUCKS!  I did a 1000-yard set a few days ago in 23:11 and that is fine for me..  Followed it up with a 500 yard set after a 90-second rest and did that in 10:23..  I am excited, as I am waaaaaaaay ahead of my swimming fitness level over this time last year.. This time last year, I was still working on getting 200 yards of continuous swimming done..  I was terrible and just kept at it..

My longest training ride last year was like 63 miles one time and that was for a local event for Jon Blaze, who passed away in 2007, but basically nothing over 50 miles..   My runs were between 10-13 miles and that was it..  I know we all have certain times we would like to hit, me that first time was to be under 8hrs 30mins..  It was hot on the run, about 93 deg, so you need to plan for that..  I took Endurolytes by Hammer to help with hydration... We will just need to monitor the weather patterns a couple of weeks out from the race and see what happens..  They also take Russian River water temperatures a couple of times a week and post it on the Vineman web site..

Being a marathon runner, I would like to toss out one piece of advice...  We build our endurance levels during the "base" phase of training..  I know you all know that..  It is the motherly instinct in me...  For those doing this race for the first time, it is not a difficult course..  A few challenging hills, yes, and a rolly run, but you can do it!..  Remember to taper 3-4 weeks before this race, as you will want to bank your energy if it is warm again this year..  Relax and follow your training plan and DO NOT go and try to do a 70.3 training day distance to see if you can do it...

Just like when I was a newbie runner, I was told not to do a 26.2 training run to see if I could do a marathon..  Your body needs time to recover and nothing you do in the last 3-4 weeks will improve on your fitness level..  All you'll end up doing is getting tired or hurt..  Stick to the training plan..  I shall now remove myself from my soapbox..

I know you all will have a great race..  Most important is to relax and take it all in as it is a beautiful location and the swim on Russian River is a blast....Train smart..

How was the bike last year, hills wise.

I have a hard time finding what I call anything close to flat here, so am hoping the course will be easier than my training rides.

I also learned a very valuable lesson yesterday, I must wear socks on the run. I had blood on my left foot from my right foot, which is the only way I knew I had a cut from the side of the shoe. Not as bad as it sounds, but was worth a few funny looks as I was on the side of the harbor looking at my feet yelling at them "where the heck is that blood from". must have been funny to watch.

I am also enjoying checking the Vineman website daily to see my name closer to being off the standby list. I check that site almost as much as I check BT.

Ya'll stay healthy.

Zeke,

The hills aren't that bad..  I am NOT a hill person at all and on the old school roadie I was on, I had to walk up like 3-4 hills..  One is the nasty, Chalk Hill at about mile 44-45...  The smaller ones I walked up were because one, my legs don't like anything hilly and the gearing in that old school would have meant I needed "Lance" legs to do it..  I didn't want to risk blowing a quad so I just clipped out and walked..  I have a nice new roadie this year and figure Chalk might be the only one I have to walk up..  I should (Surprised) be able to make it up the small ones...  Pull up the elevation map for the bike course and you'll see what I mean.. If you do any kind of rolling hill training now, yer good..  If I can locate the bike specific email that was given to me last year, I'll post it..  It was like a blow-by-blow overview of the ride by one of the guys in my tri club..  I used it as a guide and it worked out well..  Uh, if you have been training with socks, stay with them...  Just my 2 cents worth..

If you can find that email that would be awesome, I have a good bit of variety I can do here, so if I can mimick the race course as best as possible, I will be rocking.

I had been slowly working sockless into my running for shorter runs, sub hour, but had only had pinky toe blisters which I had hoped would toughen up so I could go without socks the whole way, but after Monday I will just stay sockless for the bike, as I have been doing that for a long time now, and socks for the run.

Also for the run stations are these standard small cups, or bottles like the bike?

I suck at drinking from a cup running so if it is cups I will carry my hydration with me, otherwise I may just plan on using what is on the course.

Thanks for the tips, I am looking forward to it.

Zeke,

The run is a simple out and back and you will hit up the same aide stations..  They mostly have cups but I do remember a couple having small bottles of water, which I took and carried..  Since I don't like running with something in my hand, I will carry hydration with me this year and use the aide stations to top off ..  I stopped at every one and kept dumping water on me cause it was so warm.. I may pull a "Macca", a la Chris McCormack at IM Kona 2007, and have a few wet sponges inside my cycling jersey to help keep my body cool..  Just depends on how hot it is this year..  From a few people I talked to, they said in years past the temps stayed in the mid 80's... I think 93 last year was a freak day??  (I hope!)

I will work on that old email after this weekend.. I have a race on Sunday down in Temecula then I'm off to Tempe, AZ to sign up for IM AZ 11/09.... WOO HOO!

Sounds like I need to plan on taking some with me, no big deal as I got plenty of time to try out a product that works, the Nathan bottle on the small of back isn't going to cut it I don't think, maybe smaller bottles spread out is the answer.

Thanks again

I have used Cytomax powder for several years now..  I like Peachy Keen and Go Grape the best..  I can mix to whatever strength I need..  There are several different kinds of powders and some places have the packets of Cytomax you can buy to try out before getting the big containers..  Whatever you decide on, do so soon so you can train with it..  It's getting close to the point where you need to find something and stick with it so you know if it works or not..

Remember, never try anything new on race day..

Hey kids ... I'm now #292 on the waiting list and keeping my fingers crossed. It's still a wonderful scenario if not; I would just be the IronSherpa for DoloresM2, very exciting since it's her first HIM.

I think they are doing the big gatorade bottles, which I was told by a prior participant.

If so, I would personally look into a rear of seat cage, I have the Profile design two cage one, it is ok, but I am considering the Never Reach for this as slowing to deal wtih bottles ain't gonna get me to the run any faster.

I was at about 250 on the wait list a month ago and now am close to being 150, it is moving fast.

Last year was the standard gatorade bottles, and standard water bottles - about 24 ounces, fit in standard bottle cages.  Keep in mind you HAVE to wear your number during the bike ride as well as the run, so I wore my fuel belt (with my number on it) on the bike portion.  That way I carried a bottle in the belt, a bottle in my cage (I only have room for one) and my profile design aero unit.

I would really recommend the aero unit if it fits on you bike - it makes drinking effortless (the straw is only about 2 inches away from you mouth).  I froze mine before we left on Saturday, then kept it frozen with dry ice...  It was perfect, started thawing out about 9:00, just as I needed it.

I filled it once, just grabbed a bottle as I was still moving, and squirted it into the spongy thing on top, never slowing down below about 10 mph.

You do not want to be short of water, if it is as warm as it was last year.  I drank probably the equivalent of 4 full bottles on the bike, and still found the heat really made it hard to  keep hydrated on the run (I carried a bottle there too, which again was priceless).  Having Ice water (again, dry ice in a small ice chest with your bottle left overnight at T2) was really, really helpful as your core temperature starts to rise.

Keep on training,

Dennis

I like cytomax too and citrus is my flavor of choice.

My wife, my buddy (poweredbyfear) and I are going to ride the Vineman course loop today for fun (since we're bored of all of our local routes) and then go pick up my wine orders over at Pride Mountain Vineyard.  Gonna be hot today, but not as hot as race day.  I'll try to take some pictures and post here.

I look forward to the course report, if I can I want to emulate something similar here.

On all my rides I run three bottles, two rear of seat and one on tube. Even short one hour rides that I won't even finish one whole bottle, just to add weight to the frame so I am training with a heavier bike than hopefully I race with.

I will start monitoring my hydration better and see what I am needing per hour on the bike, and able to take in, then I can get my plan together as best as possible. Then got to figure the run as well.

I will either go NeverReach system or get a aero drink holder, but am kinda cramped up near the front so may just go neverreach as that fills just as easy, and holds more so less filling.

thanks again

Wow, the heat training has begun. It was 95* here today Made the ride harder than usual  for sure, but will get used to it. No other choice reallly. Tomorrow is supposed to be as hot and I have a long brick planned.  I am going to get started a bit earlier in the day, I slept in too long today.

Yeah...took advantage of the heat today for a brisk 7-miler. Tomorrow is ocean swim/ride brick. Perfect weather for the swim...the bike...not so much...
