Champion 6285 Beautiful Sonoma County | Subject: RE: Vineman 70.3 Not sure if I'll be doing Barb's race this year (Vineman 70.3 is closed), but if any of you all are in the area and want a preview of the course, we're more than happy to go ride with you.
Also, we can rec some good pasta-loading places for dinner the night before, and carnitas burrito places for post-race protein-reloading. |

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: Vineman 70.3 Rode the course on Saturday. Was a beautiful day out. I'm sure you've all seen this from the website:
We didn't do the tail section at the start from Guerneville (T1) to Westside, so here's a picture of what you'll see on Westside
These are along Dry Creek
The small climb up Canyon
After the downhill, the turn into Geyserville
Will have to post more later...need to get ready for work!

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: Vineman 70.3 Vineman loop pictures continued... Along 128
On Chalk Hill Rd.
Faught or Shiloh Rd.
Old Redwood Highway
At the end of the course, you'll roll up to Windsor High School. You'll enter on the south end so you won't pass the school as shown below, but you will if you do the full vineman.
And on the full vineman course, you'll also go through this section to reconnect the loop Edited by enginerd 2008-04-14 12:33 PM |

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: Vineman 70.3 mixie - 2008-04-14 11:37 AM Thanks for the pics enginerd. I am looking forward to the bike, Not the hot run but eh I will get thru it. I really love that area of Ca, part of why I signed up for the race. My brother went to school at Sonoma State and I spent a lot of time visiting him up there. It is so gorgeous. The bike ride is enjoyable. Very scenic as you can see and as you already know. It shouldn't be too hot on the bike since it'll still be early, but yeah, that run will be hot for sure, plus a few rolling hills. |

193 | Subject: RE: Vineman 70.3 WOW! Thanks a bunch for those pictures! It REALLY helps out A LOT for those of us who won't have time to ride the course prior to the actual race. Don't suppose you have any pictures of the big hill at mile 45? Not that I want to frighten everyone, but I think it'd help to have a mental image of it to better prepare myself... Oh, and I kinda noticed that the roads are a bit narrow at times, with no bike lanes... How does that work? If I remember correctly, it's not a closed course, so there will be cars? Oh, and I kinda noticed that the roads are a bit narrow at times, with no bike lanes... How does that work? If I remember correctly, it's not a closed course, so there will be cars? The hill you are talking about is Chalk Hill. In the scheme of things, it's not a huge hill by California standards; it's a 385' climb. I may not be a good judge because I live in a hilly area and do a lot of hilly rides; neither my wife, my buddy, nor I found Chalk Hill to be much of a hill as a training ride. Racing is certainly a different story and in the heat of the summer, it's is undoubtedly tougher. Last year when I did the full vineman, I remember it seeming like a significant climb and relative to the rest of the course, it is. There was also a guy stopped on the hill because of cramping. the roads are open to traffic, but I honestly don't remember there being very many cars at all on most of the stretches. Dry creek did have some as did the return stretch from old redwood highway on. At all turns, there were police to hold up traffic and wave you on, so I don't remember it being much of an issue at all. |

Extreme Veteran 787 Glendora, CA. | Subject: RE: Vineman 70.3 I'll chime in on this thread as a Vineman 70.3 veteran! This is an awesome course and a GREAT course for your first HIM distance. SWIM: The water is generally warm and shallow. There is an undetectable 1 mph current. Find the cool water....You will be in the current, but the water is deeper...(i.e. you're in the channel) of the river. Be prepared to not wear the wetsuit! Last year was questionable up until the morning of the race. It was just wetsuit legal. I opted to use the wetsuit, but was quite warm. BIKE: GREAT Course!!!!! Coming out of the transition area....just plan on walking the bike up the small steep hill....somebody is liable to fall over and you will get tangled up in the mess. When you arrive, you will know the hill I'm talking about....you have to go down it to get into the transition area on the gravel. After mounting your bike....take it easy for first 5 miles...find a nice pace that will help bring your heart rate down. You will make a sharp right turn into a downward slope. Someone will be there yelling to slow down ..... listen to them....some people ultimately are going too fast and end up in the bushes. From there you head into the rollers for next 10 to 15 miles.....beautiful part of the course, but drive or ride the course ahead of time to see the condition of the road....it was rough with lots of potholes. Heading back towards the 101, is fast and smooth. After making the left, you will have a slight uphill grade, but ever so slight! Turning right on to Canyon(?) is about a 1 mile to 1 1/2 mile uphill grade but nothing too bad....just find a nice easy grade....don't mash up it! Then downhill. The next 15 miles or so is pretty flat and the roads were GREAT. Turning onto Chalk Hill....couple of uphills and then a nice beautiful downhill.....was hitting 35 mph to 40 mph. Crusied back into Windor HS where the 2nd transition area was located. RUN: First mile or so is flat, then some rollers. Take it easy going out and warm your legs up for the rollers. About 5 1/2 miles you hit a series of uphill rollers with the third the biggest one. Run around and through the winery and then flip back. Suggestions: * Dial in on your nutrition....test anything before the race itself! You will need the nutrition dialed in for this distance. * Do some hill repeats both on the bike and on the run workouts. (I'm hill challenged and the hill repeats would have helped tremendously) * Do some training in heated conditions. It was in the 90s (as previously mentioned in this thread.) You will know how your body responds to the heat and what your body will need in the form of hydration. * If conditions are right, go for the time.....if conditions are extremely hot, throw out your time goals and focus on making it through the race. * Have fun!!!!! This is a GREAT race and a GREAT course.....I'll be back for this one!!! |

I ride a double, and it put me down into low gear, but only for a very short while (maybe a minute or two). Unless you do all your riding in a pancake flat area, you should be fine. The cars did not seem to be a problem last year. Lots of county sherriff and CHP, lots of advance publicity, so all the locals (even the winery's) know that the roadway is going to have lots of riders coming. Only thing close to a problem I had was a guy passed me, about the same time I moved over to avoid a pothole. I guess if I rode a little faster that wouldn't happen!!!!

Extreme Veteran 498 Carpinteria, Ca. | Subject: RE: Vineman 70.3 How about T2, I have seen tri's on tv where all the transitions appeared to be done next to the bike racks, but the 70.3 world championships I wathched a few days ago had bags hanging by the tent with your gear. How's Vineman 70.3 run in comparison. Also T1's break down if ya don't mind. Preparation is the key. |

Veteran 349 Ironman Arizona via Surf City, USA | Subject: RE: Vineman 70.3 Zeke, T1: This will be at Russian River shoreline at Johnson's Beach.. You will be given a big bag at packet pick-up on Saturday to put yer gear in after you get yer riding stuff on and BEFORE you leave T1.. You can either leave it right there for volunteers to transport to Windsor Hi, or you can hand it to family over the fence if you have anyone there.. You must bag everything in that race numbered bag to assure all yer gear shows up at Windsor Hi if you choose volunteer transport. T2: Drop off all running gear at the designated spot on Saturday.. There are racks just like at T1, so you can rack yer bike when you come in and yer running gear is positioned already from Saturday, because you found yer designated spot and laid everything out. Put something down as the evening gets damp if there's something you don't want wet. Chances are by that time it will be warm enuf and already dry. Remember, you must drop off your running gear after your packet pick-up on Saturday.. The racks are assigned in both locations based on what wave you are assigned. I think I covered everything.. As long as its the same this year as last year! Lori |

When you arrive, you will know the hill I'm talking about.... I watched from the bottom of the hill last year and saw at least 10 people fall over and countless others in the wrong gear and still more put their HR through the roof mashing up the hill. One guy broke his chain there too. Worth taking a look at. The bees were out last year as well, my cousin got stung on his foot after taking his shoes off at the finish. One of the womens pros got stung during the bike as well. My dad is doing it ths year and allergic to bee stings, hopefully he brings a sting kit. |

Expert 704 Durham, CA | Subject: RE: Vineman 70.3 Here you go... the mileage didnt' quite add up, because I didn't make the correct loop at the winery... http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=25194 Click on the link, then the elevation graph tab. Not a lot of hills, the heat is what made it a challange last year. My fastest ever 1/2 marathon (stand alone event, on a cool day) was 1 hour, 52 minutes. I did this 1/2 in 2 hrs, 11" (after the other two events to warm up). So, I guess I"m trying to say it's not a hard run course. Edited by slow&steady 2008-05-08 9:09 PM |

Master 1661 Newbury Park, CA | Subject: RE: Vineman 70.3 Very cool, thanks! I'm going to assume the winery is roughly mile 6-7 so the biggest downhill and climb of the second half is pretty soon after coming out of the winery back onto the road. Also looks like the 2nd half is a gradual overall ascent. 449ft of climbing looks wonderful compared to Wildflower's 1700ft. |
