Sigh... I WANT my wet suit. This race is one of the reasons I bought it. I NEED my wet suit.

Looks like I'm going to be getting out of the water a little later than planned.

Did I hear the water is 80 degrees?  No way I'd swim in a wetsuit with those temsp.  Suits are legal up to 84 but no AG, and I think they send you in a different wave than normal

Did I miss something where it's not wetsuit legal? I was actaully worried about overheating in my suit if the water was over 70 and considering going w/o it.

I haven't heard an official water temp this week either...not even on the forum on their site.

Not only do you go in a different wave, you don't get to wear a chip and you don't get a race time! I didn't train this hard to not get a time! :p

I thought 78 was the cutoff? Even so that is warm for a suit, I was in the ocean this morning and started getting warm and wanted to shuck my suit off and it was probably in the upper 60s.

I hate my stupid wetsuit!

78 for fully wetsuit legal
84 is the cutoff for not wearing them at all.
Between 78 and 84 you can wear them but aren't eligible for awards/prizes. You go in a separate last wave, no chip, no time.

Meh. I'll always wear it if legal, won't if it isn't. If wetsuits aren't allowed it becomes a tiny competitive advantage for those who are comfortable swimmers with good form (I like to think I fall into that category)...but I'm not expecting to do all that well competitively in my AG over the whole day, so if it ends up no-wetsuit, all it really does is make it that much less likely I'll get in under 6 hours.

So uh...anyone want to dump large bags of ice in the river the night before the race?

Just kid-ding....

Well, I guess that helps with my chronically crappy T1...my wife's happy that I won't be lobbing a bag full o' soggy wetsuit over the fence at her...

Like putting water into water is illegal anyway? Bwahahahaha.

I should talk to my friend who works for the state's fisheries dept and see if she will let me borrow her state vehicle LOL

(By the way guys, seriously totally joking here)

Also, re dogs. Johnson Beach is private and they are pretty strict about dog....

May everyone's final week go smooth!

We still have 10 days to go and 80 is only 2 degrees above legal.. Worst case I'll get aqua socks and walk!  I am used to being in warm water when training..  I train in my sleeveless wetsuit at 24 HR Fitness and the water there is typically 83 degrees...  I still have a weak center of balance and swimming without my suit uses a ton of energy for me...  Just have to wait and see what happens..

Hope everyone's training and tapering is going well...

Lori

Sunny and seasonably warm

no wetsuit I hear?  is that right?  I am thrilled, beside myself!  No suit makes for a hot run though doesn't it?  I guess you can't have everything.  I keep going from terrified to totally excited and just knowing I am going to love this distance.....crazy isn't it?  Small heart attacks every day.  I am about to go on a new adventure!  Okay, deep breaths, calm thoughts...

Well... they just cancelled the Donner Lake Triathlon up in the Sierra's that was scheduled for this weekend for smoke reasons. Let's all hope that the fires don't get any worse, or that the winds don't change to push the smoke onto the Vineman course.

I was reading through the athletes guide and saw that the water depth is 4-7 feet.  Is that true?  Is aquajogging allowed?  JK.....   This relieves my anticipation about the swim portion.  YAY for no wetsuits!!

This race is going to be fun.....

Yep the water is very shallow in some spots.  Lots of people standup and walk at the turn-around.   Water is shallower on the sides, so it's easy to pull of to the side, stand up and fix your goggles if you need to.

As for wetsuit issue.....last year the week of the race the water was warm and not wetsuit legal.  However, the river is part of a damn system and every so often they release water from up-stream.  They did this last year and the water temp went down making it wetsuit legal.  It did not matter for me, as I had deicded after a few practice swims in the river to go without the wetsuit, I was overheating even in my sleeveless.

Regarding Nor Cal fires, my hubby works in the area and he told me there air has been fine this week.  I'm headed up there to ride the course this weekend, I'll report back if I wind up coughing up a lung

I am torn on what to do if it is wetsuit legal. I overheat easliy, I cannot even imagine wearing a suit in water that warm.  However I want the advantage if everyone else is gonna have it.  I am thinking to just wear the bottoms as it gives my legs buoyancy but less to heat up...

I kinda hope the water stays too warm, but I kinda want to wear the bottoms...eh

I've resigned myself to wait-and-see Especially if it's an option, I'll still have to feel the water race morning. Sounds like if they did an upstream release of water it could involve significant cooldown, so who knows....

Now we're close enough to start watching the 10-day forecasts for Windsor and ogling the possible heat we'll face on the run!

It's been 90+ every weekend where I live and I've been doing all my running mid day.  I'm prepared for the heat, let me tell you how not fun that was. I'm hoping it wont be so bad on race day. I am ready if it is tho!

LOL I'm in Phoenix this weekend figuring that doing my last long run in the heat (I've tried to do them all in hot conditions) will leave me as ready as I'll ever be for whatever happens.

Of course, swimming in 54 degree ocean water last weekend sure didn't do much for race prep, did it? But the cold foggy bike start after the swim was probably about accurate...made me think I may want to use arm warmers for a little while.
