all right, honeymoon's over.... Took advantage of sneaking out of work a bit early to do a sunset run on the beach bike /run path. Up to now, I've been on the nice safe treadmill, and been making nice progress MUCH more difficult outdors, more jarring, harder to breath...

I did my whole 18 /12 w/ 12 minute run, but my distance was shorter than I've been doing, and just all around more diffcult.

Really demoralizing.... :-( I am sure as I do it more I'll get used to it. But it does remind me of why I never liked to run

OK, whining mode off

Chris

Buck up little camper. Cement is one of the hardest things to run on. Well, I guess sand is worse, but let's no go there yet. Asphalt is softer and grass is better (lawn grass). Wooded trails are awesome, but you need to look where you are going so that you don't trip and fall and break your butt So that brings us back to sidewalks. Just take is easy and you'll get there. Given some time and practice, it'll feel better, just don't give up yet.

Don't give up!
I am also not a big fan of the running part but I perservere and it is getting easier.
The hardest part for me is the first 5-10 minutes - after that I am OK.
Keep running!

I used to like running, however, after running I always hurt somewhere (knees, shins, AT). I'm still trying different things and hope to find the right combination of shoes, ortho, etc... Until then, I just expect to hurt and have to ice.

Hang in there. I agree that the first 10 minutes are the hardest. My issue are the shins... they are on fire! Things certainly improved once I bought a pair of decent running shoes. But I have realized that I just have to suck it up if I want to accomplish this tri adventure journey of life!!!!!

Just keep going...

I don't know what the settings on your treadmill have been but if you have been running at 0% incline and there were any sort of hills or rises on you run, it would be more difficult. However, YOU were getting stronger.
The environmental conditions are uncontrollable but indeed make us stronger. The important thing is that you successfully completed the task at hand. Although your time wasn't what you expected it is still a victory!!

Don't look back now!!! Keep up the good work!!

In my humble opinion, running on the treadmill is easier than running outside.  On a treadmill, you're keeping up with something moving underneath you versus providing 100% of the effort when running outside on pavement.  To compensate, I'll put 1 degree of incline on a treadmill when I'm forced to use one.

Oh, and by the way, I have found running to be the most enjoyable of the three disciplines in triathlon.  It is by far the most important component of the sport, races are won or lost on the run.  Once you get your legs under you, I hope you'll find it as enjoyable as I do.  I am by no means an accomplished runner, but it is the one element where you require no equipment other than your shoes and a very strong will.

I feel similar to motivated when it comes to running. I use to hate it, could barely run a mile with out dying. Now after only a month I'm actually starting to like it. Keep up the good work, I know I have off days and I just try to look past them.

Excuse me, but did you learn to scuba dive overnight? Or learn to dive AND take stunning underwater pictures all in one week? Glad to hear the whining mode is off, because it's apparent from your pictures that you do have an optimistic side. Let me get this straight - you're running in California ... at sunset ... along the beach ... and you're thinking about the run?? Forget about the run! Let your eye for beauty take in and appreciate your surroundings. Trust me, it won't suck that way. Good luck, my overachieving comrade!!

LOL... all right. Thank you everyone for the advice/words/comments. This is why I love this place I should have mentioned I was fitted for proper shoes and run on the treadmill with +1 incline, so I'm doing what I am supposed to do......It's just not happening fast enough! But the scenery was beautiful.

Soon I will be amongst the run lovers as well.

Perfectionists unite!

Chris

(and talk about karma,,, posted my little whine and promptly turned my ankle walking down steps with 50# of scuba gear, guess I'm getting a couple rest days, LOL)

Be sure to fight against your "it's not happening fast enough" feelings.  I found out the hard way that bodies do not necessarily keep up with grand plans.  IOW, I overdid my training, even though I never violated the 10% rule and monthly recovery weeks.  I got ITBS.  I'm recovering, but now realize that training for a half marathon after having run for only 4 months was NOT smart.  Everything I've read since says that a hm should not be attempted until you have a year under your belt.  Oh well, live and learn.

...It is by far the most important component of the sport, races are won or lost on the run....

But at least HALF of each race (distance and time) is spent on the bike!  Wouldn't that make it the most important leg?

Those who found the 1st 10 mins the toughest are you warming up 1st?
I think this goes as you do more running and your body responds to exercise much more quickly.
