LOL! We'll do our best to impress your wife, but we ARE a little bit nuts, in that love-adrenaline kinda way- I mean, who gets out of bed early on a Sunday to swim in circles in a pond that just cracked 50 degrees in May, in Michigan? hehe. But she'll see how much fun we're having, than you'll have to go buy her a wetsuit and a bike!

Just tell her to bring the camera so she can take a picture of your face as your coming out of the water It'll be great to meet everyone!

Don't worry...we'll take care of you.  And, your wife looks great, but Gawd Damn your daughter is a cutie pie!!  What a beautiful little girl!  You should be so proud.  : )

Thank you so much! And I am. It's hard to beleive I helped make that little bundle of joy. She already has the bug too! She ran close to a mile un aided the other day.

Thanks for the reassurance everyone! I know she'll have a great time. I'll warn her about you Trixie. But I think she will be ok. She can handle all of my college buddies at the same time (Note to self. That could have given the wrong impression) She can put up with all of my college buddies' crude, 15 year old behavior, so she can handle anything!

Can't wait to meet everyone. See you then.

Here is the path for the swim. This is a total of 702 meters, which is as close as I can get us to for the sprint without extending it into an area that fishermen tend to hang out in.  For the Oly, we'll be doing 2 laps.  The first way point has a picnic table to sight on, At the 2nd way point there is a memorial wreath.  There's nothing for the 3rd point, I'll try to put something there....the 4th is a big clump of trees and the finish is the far end of the beach.

The finish puts us across from the transition area.  We just need to be aware of any fishermen who might be out there.  We'll make a gameday decision on the path when we see who else is in the water.

Trish, Trixie, Yeats, Steve, Karen, and I were all out swimming this morning and the water wasn't too bad once our exposed body parts went numb....Trixie turned a nice shade of purple   Seriously though, it really wasn't bad.

Coop - man that looks longer than 702 meters!!!! Ok, I will trust your measurements (although I am not sure we should trust any male's measurements!) .... See Brad, your wife will be in good hands ...

I will bring the condiments for the picnic at Coop's house.

I look forward to reacquainting with people from last year and meeting the new ones!!!!

Does anyone know if I696 will be closed down for us East Siders????

Ya, well I remeasured the thing at least 3 times cuz it sure felt like we swam about 3 miles out there this morning.

Oh, by the way, if there's anyone who isn't comfortable swimming out over the middle of the lake, they can track along the shore.  Start at the East end, then shoot for the West end of the beach, then go back to the start, do that twice, then continue to the West end finish line.  That's 730 meters, or at least that's what Google says.

Basically I sux at direction.  So I route out the bike / run map base on your description...

rkreuser - 2009-05-11 7:37 AM

Ride / Suggestions: Two rides are laid out for you peeps, one 12.6 mile-loop, and one 24.8 mile loop, both fully contained within IRLA.  Again, you can ride wherever you want, but this will come close to being a real tri distance.

·         Again, first and foremost, all riders need to observe park rules (e.g., speed limit, signage, etc) as well as the State of Michigan cycling laws. Links to each are here and here.

·         Always ride on the right hand side of the road, no more than two abreast.

·         You may draft if you want to cheat. Just kidding, draft if you want.

·         For the 12.6 mile course:

1.    Leave the parking lot (0.2 mi).

§  NOTE: There will be other cars in the parking lot, PLEASE be careful as you navigate your way through the parking lot.

2.    Turn left. Ride until the end of the road, approximately 2.1 miles

§  NOTE: about 100m before the end of the road, there will be train tracks.

3.    Go to the end of the parking lot, turn around.

§  NOTE 1: There will be other cars in the parking lot, PLEASE be careful as you navigate your way through the parking lot.

§  NOTE 2: the pavement is notoriously lousy in the parking lots…for both Note 1 and Note 2, it’s worth NOT coming into these areas like a bat-out-of-hell…use caution.

4.    Ride approximately 4.6 miles until you reach a stop sign (at the guard’s shack at the entrance to IRLA). Stop, and turn right.

§  NOTE: This is a dangerous intersection, please do not do a rolling stop through this.

5.    Ride approximately 1.5 miles until you get to the parking lot; ride all the way to the back of the parking lot and circle the dumpsters, going back out the way you came.

6.    Ride 1.5 miles until you get back to the guard shack, and are at a stop sign. Take a left.

7.    Ride 2.5 miles back to Spring Mill Pond.

8.    Turn left.

9.    Ride the length of the parking lot (carefully) until you get to transition. Dismount.

·         For the 24.8 mile course, do steps 1-7 above, but when you get back to spring Mill, go straight – don’t turn into the spring mill parking lot. You will then circle back to step 2 above, and complete steps 2-9.

Ride map

rkreuser - 2009-05-11 7:37 AM

Run / Suggestions: Two runs will be laid out for you peeps, one 3.3 relatively flat run, and one 6.2 mile-loop with a little more hillage. Sorry that the 3.3 isn’t 3.1, but I had to extend it a 10th of a mile to avoid a turnaround on a relatively sharp curve. Again, runs are on pavement and fully contained within IRLA.

·         Again, first and foremost, everyone needs to observe park rules (e.g., speed limit, signage, etc) as well as the State of Michigan DNR rules.

·         Always run on the right side of the road, running WITH traffic.

·         For the 3.3 mile course:

1.    Leave the parking lot (0.2 mi).

§  NOTE: There will be other cars in the parking lot, PLEASE be careful as you navigate your way through the parking lot.

2.    Turn left. Run approximately 1.45 miles to the Fluorescent GREEN MARK on the side of the road. Turn around.

3.    Run the 1.45 miles back to Spring Mill Pond. Turn right.

4.    Run the 0.2 miles back to transition. Done.

Sprint run route

rkreuser - 2009-05-11 7:37 AM

·         For the 6.1 mile course:

1.    Leave the parking lot (0.2 mi).

§  NOTE: There will be other cars in the parking lot, PLEASE be careful as you navigate your way through the parking lot.

2.    Turn left. Run approximately 2.1 miles to end of the road; turn around at the END of the parking lot.

3.    Run the 2.1 miles back to Spring Mill Pond but do not turn into the parking lot – run another 0.8mi to the Fluorescent GREEN MARK on the right side of the road. Turn around.

4.    Run the 0.8 m back to Spring Mill Pond. Turn Left

5.    Run the 0.2 miles back to transition. Done.

OYL run route

I will see you guys Sunday!

Ya, those are nice, and it looks like maybe Rick and I miscalculated on the oly run.  I guess that's what happens when you've got a couple of IT guys doing math without a calculator.

OK....hate to do this, but I'm going to cancel the 'Let's Make a Tri'. Here's why....

The park rules state:

(h)  "Event"  means  a  single,  structured,    organized,    consolidated,
scheduled meeting or occurrence which is on state-owned lands and to which  1
or both of the following apply:
  (i) A fee or donation is required for participation.
(ii)  The number of people involved is 20 or more individuals.

AND

(m) To  hold  events  including,  but  not  limited  to,  races,  endurance
contests, tournaments, or  trail  rides,  unless  the  events  are  conducted
pursuant to a permit. The permit may include  a  charge  to  the  sponsor  or
permittee for the use of the land.  An event may require a  performance  bond
to ensure permit compliance and may require public liability insurance.   The
department may waive the requirement for a permit for events where the number
of participants is 20 or more individuals if the department  determines  that
the event will not require department   oversight, and the event will have  a
minimal impact on the resource and on the use of the lands by others.

---------------------------

I'm no lawyer and don't know whether the training day could be considered an event.   That, by itself, wouldn't be an issue, but no one has done the work to to secure (if needed) land use permits, performance bonds, liability insurance, park supervision, etc. If someone wants to try to run that trap line by Sunday, go for it...the park office is closed on Saturday, so that'll be tough.

Sorry for the last minute notice...I will try to reach out - through BT and phone - to everyone on this thread to ensure they know that the training day is cancelled.  If anyone wants to call me directly, please do so at 248.705.8204.

Why aren't we just a bunch of people getting together to train? Not sure the difference here....Greyhounds meet to do it. I think as long as we don't LOOK like we are actually racing what does it matter. I don't think it was meant to be a real race situation anyway.

I say we still meet. We still do the distances, but we don't "race" it. we finish the distances, BS in between and then it's like an other day out there. No?  There are too many people planning to come and the training will be to good to pass up.

I'm all for that.  We can just hang out - maybe we just get together in groups of 3-5 or so and stagger some of the event starts so that we don't end up with 20 people all hitting the water at the same time.  As fun as that would be to do....

I say we do this between 10am - 1pm then head over to my place for bbq and beer (soda).

Regardless, I'll be heading out there to swim - I need some serious work on my OWS.  If any of you wants to join you're all welcome...and of course everyone is still welcome at my place afterwords.

Sounds good. This is what I will be doing

Brickey and I are riding out to ILRA (55-60 miles) and his lovely wife is going to meet us there with our gear. I will then do an OWS or splash around the shallow parts as that is what I generally do. After which I will BS with you kids about transition if you'd like while I grab my bike back out of the brickeymobile. I shall ride the short course assuming the fun parts are not screaming. Upon arrival to the parking lot I will BS about transitions again if you'd like while I throw on my sneakers, assuming the sticks are not protesting. I plan to run the short course.

Not sure if we are hitting Coop's afterwards but I'm sure it would be a swell time.

Unless there is a crazy storm, I will be there, everyone is welcome to join me.

I don't know about ILRA, but up here the park rangers are pretty thin before M-day weekend.

Technically, we BARELY have 20 people, so if even just 1 person doesn't end up completing in 1 stage of the event, than we haven't done anything wrong. Also, like puppet said, I am pretty sure there are no park rangers before Memorial day. Ryan has been to state parks twice and has yet to pay an entrance fee....just saying. I don't mean to antagonize you Rick, it's just that a lot of people have gotten really excited to hang out and swim/run/ride with some friends!

I am still planning to utilize the park to conduct a swim-bike-run brick tomorrow morning, since I have some races coming up soon!

I'm not running tomorrow, does that qualify as the one sissy that doesn't complete a tri, but does a swim bike du, I may even just be there to swim.
