Hey everyone, I grew up in Sandusky and do a lot of boating on the lake. I'm a beginner triathlete so I won't be participating in the race, but thought I'd give my insight and opinions.  I looked on the web site and it looks like there is are 2 courses depending on weather. The original course is in lake erie which can be very unpredictable. This area is sheltered a bit by a breakwall so that could be a pro or con.  When we boat, once we get around the breakwall and into the course area, it is usually calmer, but it all depends on the weather. The breakwall can be a hinderance because the waves can hit against the breakwall and it makes it worse.

It looks like the plan B course in Sandusky Bay will be a nice alternative if the weather is bad.  Sandusky Bay is generally calmer.

Also, September weather in Sandusky is usually nice as it is not scorching hot, but the water temp is nice.

I hope that helps! also, I would recommend making travel arrangements early because this is still a very busy time for cedar point.  my family owns a few hotels in the area so check it out! www.lakeeriemotels.com

Tongue out (That is me drooling.)   I want to sign up for the HIM but am still building up my nerve...  Any thoughts on when this will close out?  I don't want to miss out because i'm battling my inner swimmer demon.

Is it crazy to think that someone who has never done a triathlon could work up to the HIM for this race. I have been kicking around the whole triathlon idea for 2 years now and just never seem to do it. For 2010, I have no excuses, I'm just gonna do it. I was thinking of building up to it with a Sprint, then maybe an Olympic or 2 then do this HIM. Is that too much to handle in the first year? I'm trying to plan out a whole race year (if I sign up and commit now I will have to do it, no refunds) and was just looking at things. Any suggestions for OH races on this plan?

2009 was the first time I ever participated in tri's.  I completed two sprints, 2 olympics and one 1/2 IM (Deer creek Toyota challenge).  I think it's very reasonable to think you can complete a HIM in your first season.  One thing I learned this year, Bike, more bike, bike in the rain, bike in the wind and bike some more!  One of my friends refers to the bike as "Satan's Toy".

Good Luck

I am confused about if CP will still be opened that day for the general public.   The registration only includes 2 tickets to the park per participant.  Do you think we will we be able to ALSO use our season passes so we can bring entire family?

Tabbs, Cedar Point will be open the entire weekend.  So family and friends will be able to take advantage of the park for the entire weekend.

There's also a thread in the Iron-distance forums entitled Louisville vs. Cedar Point. I posted a good summary of why I chose Cedar Point in there.

Probably in for the half distance - toying with the full but I dont think I have the time or desire to put in that much training.

I'm also thinking about doing the half for this one. I just need to get over my fear of the big lake. People laugh at me when I say Lake Erie is like the ocean, but to me it is.

I find that I am more terrified the better I can see. If I can see more than 3 feet in front of me it freaks me out. I went swimming at a quarry this summer and I could see the drop off and the plants and fish 15-20 feet below me. I did fine snorkeling in the caribbean though. I guess I should either be able to see nothing or swim in the caribbean as my two race venues.

So I'm about 90% sure I'm in for the Full. Going to the doctor on Wednesday to deal with this sciatic nerve pain I've been dealing with for a month or so. A positive result will get me to 95% sure. Cross your fingers!

I am also planning on doing the full tri @ Cedar point.  I live in Sandusky and have run 5 marathons so I thought this would be the perfect venue to start my tri career! What am I getting myself into???

I have not registered yet but it still looks to be open. I plan on doing it soon though.

I bought a wetsuit and when the weather warms I'm going to do my training in the lake.  As of yet I don't have a fear of open water... Then again i've never swam 2.4 mi in lake erie .

Well Week 1 of training for this is complete for me. 23 more to go! If I make it through Week 2 and my back still hasn't blown up (I'm managing a herniated disk), I guess I'll have to register for this darn thing.
