cleveland.com ran a story yesterday that has the preliminary course maps available.  The article also verified that there will also be a half IM distance race the same day as well.  Course should be flat and fast with the exception of wind.

I'm doing it!

Sorry for the newby question... I know the official Ironman races cost $525, what is an average or guess cost for something like this event, an Iron distance but not ironman event?

Thanks!

Edit: Just found the other thread on this event, sounds like it'll be close to the same cost as the official Ironman events. Bummer! Still hard to turn down.

The $525 cost is the norm for an ironman race.  Some non-m-dot races are cheaper ($395), but others are in the $500 range.

I am very temped by this race!

This one is on my 2010 list.

I'm burned out by the Ironman-attitude.

Interesting. Haven't swam in Lake Erie in years. Anyone have any idea what the wave conditions are like off Cedar Point?

Really depends on the winds and where there coming from.   I OWS in Vermilion, about 15 miles east of cedar point, right on the lake.  Water can be flat and calm, wavy or unswimmable.  If the winds are coming out of the northwest, the swim could be pretty rough.

I live in Fremont, Ohio.  I really need someone to do Saturday morning long rides/bricks with.  The rest of the training I try to do at lunch time including long runs on Thursday.

Can we register for this yet? I'm definitely doing it.
Even if it's not cheaper than IM, the close distance makes the ultimate cost of traveling to ride the course and stuff much less.

Registration opens on Sept. 1

There will also be a half IM going on at the same time.  Course map shows only 400ft of ascent over the entire 56 mile loop course.   Should be very fast.

Well, I did it! I registered for the whole race series when it opened 8/1/09.  It's a series of 3 races: Olympic in Knoxville in May 2010, A 70.3 in Connecticut in June and the full 140.6 at Cedar Point 9/11/10.  I'm super excited and ready to amp it up to the next level! I'm in Lake County - Mentor, an eastern suburb of Cleveland.

BTW, Lake Erie can be brutal!  Today the Greater Cleveland Triathlon was cancelled and we did a Duathlon because the waves were upwards of 3 feet.  Should be interesting!

This is exactly what I plan on doing very soon.  Being able to get a race in in May is big, especially living here in northern ohio, hell it could and probably will be snowing still.  LOL

Are you a member of the cleveland tri club?  I'm thinking of joining soon myself.  I'd expect a number of triathletes in the cleveland area will be doing this race could probably get a good size training group orgaized.

Can you sign up for the races online somewhere? I checked the website and couldn't find anything about registration, it just listed an email address.

Yes you can sign up for the race series now, not JUST the Cedar Point IM race ... that opens Sept. 1.  At the bottom is a "register" link.  Kind of hard to see, but it's there.

I am a CTC member and yes, a lot will be doing this race. The race will likely sell out, which is why I moved quickly on it.
CTC has a lot of training going on at all times.  The 35$ membership fee is worth it! You get discounts at area stores and on some races, which will allow you to get you $$ over the year.  Plus, most are a pretty fun, friendly group as far as I've found!  You should join!

I grew up in Cleveland, and use to live in Mentor. Loved the Lions Club DU in Willoughby, three laps up that wicked hill on Rt 84.

I have two worries about the Cedar Point Ironman, 1) the swim will be cancelled (will we do a 10k, bike, marathon?), 2) the chop will be so bad we won't be able to see the buoy's! Probably will end up just doing the HIM.

Where cedar point is located, they could easily move the swim south into the harbor like area were waves might not be as bad an issue.  I would really hate to plan for an im and end up doing a really long du.

Currently the swim is set up to be in the main lake which could be fine or cancelled depending on how much wind and the direction.  Anything west or south should be fine.  NW, N or E wind will be trouble.  If they are smart they have a  backup plan to go off the other side into Sandusky Bay in that event.  Unless it's really howling, that should make it doable with any direction of wind.  Trying to talk myself into this.  Would love to be in the first race held there.

For me it is either Ironman Louisville, or Cedar Point. It took about a month for IM Louisville to close out last year, don't know if non-Mdot races will close as quickly.

They have their tenative course maps up, including the swim. I sent them an email asking if they had a solid date for registration to open. They will be doing a 70.3 and 140.6 distance so the bike and run are double loop courses. I would much prefer this to Louisville for heat concerns. I am only concerned about the lake erie swim. Not that I am afraid of swimming in lake erie which I have done before but the lake weather can be very unpredictable (see cleveland and vermillion triathlons). I know steelhead has had to go DU style a few times. If I am going to train for a 140.6 I better get to swim. Has any other large IM or 70.3 distance races have issues with Big lake/ocean issues?

The email response I got (within 30 min too)

Thomas,

Registration for the Cedar Point race will open on September 1st of this year. We will make an announcement on our website and via newsletter within the next week. As for the swim, we are currently evaluating multiple options for a secondary swim location should the weather not cooperate with us. We are fortunate in that we can potentially use the water on the other side of Cedar Point which is a bit more sheltered. Let me know if you have any other questions and we hope to see you at the race!!
