Total Time = 1h 19m 44s
Overall Rank = 42/409
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 6/32
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:00 AM and had a bagel with peanut butter. Sipped on G2 during the drive ~ 30 minutes. I ate a banana about 15 minute before race...I will skip this next time.
Event warmup:

Did a quarter mile swim warm up, but that was more than an hour before race. I should have done some other warmups immediately prior to race.
Swim
  • 16m 48s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

The first half of the swim went very well. I sighted well and felt very comfortable. The second half was more difficult. I had a very difficult time sighting. The buoys were spaced farther apart and I could not see them. This was likely due to my dark goggles, fogging of said goggles, and the distance of the buoys.

The swim was longer than 0.50 mile. My Garmin said more like 0.65, but this may have to do with my sighting issues
What would you do differently?:

Working on sighting in OWS. Get amber colored goggles.
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Fastest T1 in my age group, so I was happy. I am going to start to work on getting hat and glasses on while stripping the wet suit.
Bike
  • 36m 17s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 20.33 mile/hr
Comments:

I gave it my all on the bike; which was my goal.

Biking continues to be my weakness. I think I need more TITS.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Run
  • 24m 33s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Not my best run, but am happy.I came off the bike with burning, tight quads and both calves tightening during the first /14 mile. I had thoughts of how I was going to finish with the pain and tight quads/calves. After the first mile or so, my quads and calves loosened up and felt much better. I did have negative split on the run.

With the lack of run training due to illness and calf injury, I am happy with this run.
Post race
Warm down:

Gatorade and water. Met my GF. Looked at the results and realized I finished 6th in my age group!!

I honestly can say that I left everything on the course.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Calf injury

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
