Very short race report--I have a lot of mess to clean up and pack over the next two days!

I FINALLY won my AG in this race (think I have been second three times!). 9th overall. Just missed the 2:30 "barrier" at 2:30:27, which is a 4-minute PB. age, probably going to just stop thinking about it! This isn't a super-fast course (not slow, but not super-flat and fast), but I don't get to do Olys that often. Awesome swim and bike, so-so run. Then again, I would not recommend racing in Hokas with gel insoles--there is quite a bit of gravel on the run course and that was just the only way I could think of to make it bearable with some nerve irritation issues I've been having in my toes. Felt like I was wearing lead boots. Other than that, a good race, and beautiful course as always. Will try to do a real RR later and put in some photos when they are available.

Comic highlight of the race (there are always some with me) was when I hit a bump and my aerobottle ejected vertically OVER MY HEAD! A volunteer said she'd pick it up and I managed to retrieve it after the race. Fortunately had a frame bottle on board so was able to stay fairly well hydrated, though having to wash down gu with Nuun did cause a few GI issues which did not help my run.....On the scale of what can and has happened in my races, not too bad!

Actually, me too. But it's a really awful fascination going on during the race, like whyyyyyyy do I do Sprints ... they hurt SOOOO much! You're pretty much on the red line the whole time. Barfy!

That said I got to take home some hardware and even cash for 3rd in AG. So what if the trophy looks like a crack pipe. The medal is pretty (that and I think there were only 6 ppl in my AG, and I coach & outfit the one who came in 2nd so of course she was going to come in ahead since she actually does what I advise! ha! unlike me)

CONGRATS KAREN!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HANDS-MARIE!!!

Wow--cool medal and crack pipe! All I got for my efforts was a beer glass. (And they give exactly the same beer glass every year to first, second, and third in AG. So now I have a set of four.) Plus they gave all the first-time athletes the same beer glass. Top 5 OA (I wasn't that far out of it; might have made it with a normal-for-me run) got plaques with a photo of last year's winner on the bike. Unless you happen to be winning OA for the second year in a row, doesn't that sound a bit lame?! And first OA gets a bottle of sparkling cider. Beautiful race but they really need to try a bit harder on the awards!

I hear you on the sprints. To be honest, that is my least favorite distance. I just feel like I am going to puke the. entire. time. Last year at Singapore Sprint it was more like the. entire. day. I don't think the nausea entirely went away until sometime after I got to the airport to fly back to Saigon.

I still wish they would invent a tri that involves an IM swim, Oly bike, and HIM run. That would be about right.

Great Job!
HaHa that's funny with the pipe. It must have been a nautical themed race. That is a Boatswain's (Bos'n) pipe. Every boatswain's mates in the Navy and the Coast Guard was (30 years ago) required to know how to use one. Mine is in my office in my honor box. It's the whistle they blow to pipe people aboard ships or call chow.

Cool! Just for fun Mom and I got the beer/wine glasses out to take a photo. Turns out there is a distinction--second place AG has purplish red lettering on the beer glass, first place AG has blue lettering, and overall top 3 (or 5 now) get wine glasses instead. None of them actually say what place you got, or what distance you did.The first year I did the event, I was second overall in the sprint, which is generally less competitive, and first in 40-44. It's a much more competitive race when you have to do 2:30 or under in the Oly (which has pretty much all the climbing on the bike; it's not double the sprint course) to take 45-49 women's! And the next AG up wasn't much slower--I didn't take her until the last 400m or so of the run. Two years ago, I only caught the winner of women's 65-69 at about mile 2 of the run. We have some crazy fast "old ladies" around here.

So that's one wine glass, two purple-printed beer glasses, and one blue-printed beer glasses. Maybe it IS time to move somewhere else and try some other races.

Been having some fun getting my Mom riding again. She's had trouble with anemia and is pretty light, so ended up getting a pedal assist bike*. Loves the different settings for it so she can adjust to keep up with who she's riding with and still do her own work. Also in case she goes a little far that day, can dial it up to get back. Rides soft and has a minor shock in the headset too.

One difficulty is that the thing weighs aboutt 46 lbs (seriously). She can't actually load it onto her car by herself. Hitch rack or inside. So far I've figured out techniques to make it easier for someone assisting her, but still trying for on her own. Once on the car though, we found a previously unknown safety feature of the vehicle. When the back-up camera detects an obstacle, it will automatically hit the breaks. And you can guess exactly where the bike is situated on the rack. She couldn't back up until getting the auto braking disabled. Now it's down to just an alarming beep. Hoping to figure that out soon too as the rack is still in view of the camera, even without the bike on.

*This isn't a truly motorized bike or e-bike because the motor only assists when pedaling as it's attached up in the crank area. It does nothing when coasting, otherwise the pedals would keep going around too. This model also has a speed limitation on the assist of 28 mph. So faster than she'll ever see. My brother got a kick out of testing this before bringing it over.

I would love to get something similar for my mom. She really likes to ride and do bike tours but at 78 is not very fast (I simply can't go at her speed anymore without falling off my road bike) and doesn't have the power to get over substantial hills anymore. Had not thought about the bike loading issue--hopefully between the two of us (she's my size, which is to say, not that big) we'd be able to load it.
