Swim
Comments: For some unknown reason, my goggles decided they wanted to leak badly when I hit the water. Maybe because they were too dry, I don't know. So I had to quickly roll on my back, dump the left lens and in frustration pretty nearly suctioned my eyeball out from pushing the goggle back on so hard. I started in the back with the slow people which made this cramped swim portion very tough. I was constantly going around people. I had to almost stop a few times as people swerved severely off course as I was trying to go around them. I seemed to finally catch a break on the way back in. But it was a very frustrating swim. What would you do differently?: I don't know... make sure I enter my swim time correctly or something?? Transition 1
Comments: T1 went pretty normally. No transition time as both transitions are included in the bike time. What would you do differently?: I really want to learn how to just attach my shoes to my bike and start that way. Goal: figure this out by Frantic Frog. Bike
Comments: I passed my buddy Chris who was coming back in from the bike about mile 2.5. I passed a LOT of people on the bike portion like I did in the swim. I was back with the people on mountain bikes at first. One guy was riding smack in the middle of the 2 lane road. I told him to get over so I could pass... he got farther over to the left... So I passed him on the right. Whatever. As I got tired of yelling out "ON YOUR LEFT" which soon just shortened to "LEFT," I reminded myself to be grateful for how much I had improved. Last year *I* would have been one of those slow people at the back getting passed like crazy. I was also very inspired as I passed a handicapped guy in one of the modified paraplegic bicycles. Very cool. I wanted to take my GU during the middle/end of the bike some time especially since it had been so long since my first one, but my stomach was still feeling very yucky so I held off. What would you do differently?: Keep working, keep getting faster. Transition 2
Comments: Since there weren't enough racks and I had just wedged mine in to start with and I was sooo far towards the end of the race. I had to re-rack my bike in a different place than my stuff because there was ZERO room in the original location. This slowed me down a bit. What would you do differently?: Ditto T1, leave shoes on bike. I'd like to learn how to ride/run w/o socks as well. This seems tough though. I may try some shorter runs without just to see how that goes. Run
Comments: The run felt amazing. My legs were strong and all this good running I've been doing both with and without my HRM has helped me learn exactly what level I can push to get optimal performance without burning out. I convinced my shaky stomach to take the GU about 1/2 mile in. I think I could have pushed a bit harder, but with no mile markers I underestimated how far I had gone (as I usually underestimate myself). I had a good bit of push left for the final sprint. Plus I think my sprint sessions really helped with this. I flew like the wind and passed several people. :D The inspirational video with the M&M song in the back ground was definitely pushing me ahead at greater speeds. "Lose yourself in the music the moment, you own it, you'd better never let it go, you only get one shot do not lose your chance to flow, this opportunity comes once in a lifetime." Over and over. It made the last 1/4 mile fly. Oh, and my new shoes were absolutely fantastic - I loved them!! No burning feet, no calf cramps - so wonderful! What would you do differently?: Keep working, keep getting faster. Post race
Warm down: Walk around a bit, stretch, drink water and eat some (not so great) post race food. Gloat over all my guy friends who I beat. Hahaha! Competition makes things so much more fun! I now get full bragging rights until the next event. Yea! Go to the awards ceremony which took forever to get started and then was super slow. Oh gosh, the organization of this whole even was pretty terrible. Got my cup for 1st place in Athena! :) But no medal. :( Kind of a cheaply run even. -sigh- What limited your ability to perform faster: More miles! I always need more miles. :) And lose some more weight! If I can do this well in the Athena category (140+ for this event) at this weight, then maybe I could even place in the overall for the women if I can get my weight down. 24.4 lbs lost so far! Event comments: I thought about giving a 2 but the actual course was just so nice that I gave it a 3 (the race course was a 5!). Actual race organization is definitely at best a 2, probably a 1. Bleh, not sure my friends will be able to talk me into doing this one again next year. Last updated: 2009-04-14 12:00 AM

Note: If I had raced AG, I would have been 3/7.
Get up, get dressed, eat my normal breakfast + a banana. Oh wow, I had to use the bathroom A LOT. I don't know if this is something I should be concerned about but I finally had to take 2 immodiums to slow my roll. Jeez. Anyways, got to the race on time but the disorganization was incredible! Stand in one line in this building over here to get the SWAG. Stand in another line to get your number, stand in another line to get your chip, stand in anther line to get marked, then I realize that no one gave me a swim cap, run back over and get a cap. Also at this point I realize I've been given the number 458! YUCK! How in the heck did I get such a high number?? This means I'll be starting waaaaay late. -sigh- Take a deep breath and try to not be overly stressed about the way the day is going down so far. Go cram my bike into a small opening because there were too few racks. Seriously, there was so little room that people just started laying their bikes in the grass. The race started 20-25 minutes late. Then I was way in the back so I got to wait around for a while longer. Race start was supposed to be 7, I actually hit the water around 8.
Not much space for warm up. I did my dynamic stretching and ate my GU way too soon thanks to the delay. I kept having to walk down to the water to re-wet my goggles. I may have to try some vaseline on them in the future.
