Pre-race routine:

Woke up. Growled at the alarm clock. Decided I had set it too early (dangerous) and hit snooze a few times. Finally dragged myself out of bed. Took a shower, poured some granola and milk into a bowl, grabbed my gym bag and bib and such and shuffled out the door. I stopped at a gas station to buy coke (this is quickly becoming an addiction on mornings I can't quite wake up).

I got to the base and decided I didn't want to fight for a porta potty so I stopped at the base track on the OPPOSITE side of the base from the race. It was still on my way. Used the bathroom there and then got back in the car and headed to the race. I guess I got there around 0645. I sat in my car and tried to put my disposable chip on. But the stupid thing malfunctioned and I ended up without a sticky adhesive to attach it. Drat. I started to wander around looking for tape and spotted a poster help up to the pavilion wall with duct tape. PERFECT. I stole a piece of duct tape and managed to keep my chip on my shoe.

I stood around some more and decided I had to use the bathroom again. Luckily there were "real" bathrooms in the pavilion. I stood in line and when my turn finally comes I walk into the stall to find out that I drew the "kids stall". I kid you not...the toilet was half size and only about six inches off the ground. *sigh* But I'm stuck now, so I go to lock the door and the latch won't lock. As I'm fighting with it, my hand slips and I totally whack my knuckle on the darn thing. It starts bleeding. Great. Why do I have to start every race lately by hurting myself??? I go to put pressure on it to stop the bleeding and I almost screamed because it hurt so bad to touch it. WTF.

I use the bathroom (very very carefully on the teeny tiny toilet) and walk back outside. Then I walked to the start line. Found a few people I knew and chatted. Pick up my fake flower to drop at the Memorial on the way past it.
Event warmup:

Walking to the start.

Comments:

Okay, so my ACTUAL time was 42:47. We were wearing disposable chips but they only recorded your FINISH time, not your start time. And it took me almost a minute to cross the line. It was very slow going at first. Narrow start, lots of runners. That was fine by me since I knew I hadn't had a real warmup. So probably jogged the first half mile or so before I got down to business.

I struck a "fairly hard" effort and kept cross-checking the HR. It was about 170-ish which was a little low but I decided I would try to speed up each mile as I went along.

It was already rather HOT. I hate hot. Kept on plugging. Dropped off my flower about three quarters of a mile in at the Memorial. I skipped the first aid station because there were just too many people to really get to the water. First mile split was 10:04 with an AHR of 161.

After the first mile marker I picked it up a notch. It got hotter. Second mile split was 9:12 with an AHR of 172. Better. Somewhere around here my ankle started to hurt for no apparently reason whatsover. Very sharp pain on the inside of my left ankle. WTF? Lasted several hundred yards. I grabbed a cup of water at the "halfway point" aid station and drank it.

Picked up the effort some MORE on the back side but the heat must have been getting to me. HR went up, and pace went down. The split was 9:36 with an AHR of 176. And the course was essentially flat for all of this part. Very very gradual inclines and declines, that's it.

I kept plugging trying to speed up but it really was getting hot now. I skipped the last aid station though...it's such a short race! Still had high HR and slower pace. :( 9:56 split and AHR of 177.

Right after the 4 mile marker came THE HILL. It was actually fairly long and a decent grade. But the finish line was close now so I was hitting it with everything I had. Last 0.4 was 3:56 and AHR of 184. I think if the hill hadn't been there you would have seen a faster pace.

I REALLY wanted to come in under 10'/miles and I knew by my watch I was, but also realized that I was going to have to bust it if my official time was also going to be under 10' miles. Just made it.
What would you do differently?:

Not weigh so damn much.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water and walked to my car to switch shoes. A blister had started forming on my right foot and I wanted out of my shoes! I also found a bandaid for my bleeding knuckle.

I walked around the expo a bit getting some food/liquids. I eventually found Jacque who was supposed to help me paint later in the day. So I chatted with her for awhile and then we both decided to leave. I went to the base gym to take a shower since I was about to paint my bathrooms and couldn't afford to have them wet!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am fat.

Event comments:

Fairly well done local race. I would really like to see the disposable chips be able to pick up your start and finish times.....especially when they are so different even for such a small race.
