Pre-race routine:

Stopped off @ McD to pick up my muffin and coffee, my usual pre-race breakfast. 2hr drive. Arrived an hr before race time. It felt quite windy and chilly, even with my long sleeve jacket zipped all the way up. People around me were also commenting about the unexpected chilliness. I picked up my race kit and lined up for the portalet. Still felt chilly and wonder if it's too cold for me to swim. As I was lining up, some guys in front were chatting and one guy was mentioning his wife has switched to the du. He was telling her to swim but not to continue if hands are too cold and numb after she comes out of the water, but she felt it's too early in the season to risk it. I finished my business, but the conversation I overheard made me felt uneasy. I went to the registration desk to inquire about the water temp. Jan Thomas said she didn't know but she thinks maybe 63. I was a little shocked, and immediately asked her to switch me to the du. I'm not sure if this is the right decision, maybe I'm a wimp. Maybe the conversation I overheard psyched me out, but this is supposed to be fun, and I don't want to risk a bad experience, given what happened at the Worlds last yr. 30min later at the pre-race briefing, John Salt said it's a wetsuit optional swim, water temp was 68 when they measured in the morning. So maybe I could have swum? Maybe the water temp was warmer than the air temp?
Event warmup:

Not much, a few strides.

Comments:

As usual, I always find duathletes start out really fast. I started out towards the back, passed a few people in my AG, but a couple passed me back.

Comments:

I wasn't pushing too hard, but I was passing a lot of people. Keep yelling "on the left". I can't believe how many women ran faster and were ahead of me, but no matter, I'm passing and hoping they won't pass me on the 2nd run. There're more downhills on the 1st half, more uphills on the 2nd. I was able to stay mostly aero except on hills. Top speed was 49.5kph.

Comments:

I don't think any of the women that I passed on the bike passed me back. Some of the women that ran much faster than me on the 1st run are now quite far back. As I was running down the finishing chute, my sunglasses fell off but I didn't want to waste time picking them up. As I crossed the finish line, Mike, the official race photographer congratulated me. He commented that I was really fast, and thinks I'm top 10 women overall. I thought I did OK, but didn't really think I was that fast.
PS - Mike was right, I'm 8th overall.
Post race
Warm down:

Had to pack up quickly and drive back out to Toronto for my 3pm massage. I was going to pick up some post-race food but the line up was waaaaaay long. I overheard John Salt commenting that the long lineup is driving him nuts. Wonder if he fixed it somehow. I guess if I had gotten the food first and then packed my stuff, the line up would have been a lot shorter, given I was supposed to have finished FOP.
(PS - 7.8L/100 for this trip on my Suby)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Question s/b what limited my ability to do the tri -
I dunno, weather felt too chilly. Psyched out. Didn't want to risk a bad experience.

Event comments:

I don't know whether it was the right decision to pull out of the swim and switched to the du. But 1st place finish is not a bad consolation prize. 8th overall women doesn't sound so bad either. But back to the drawing board in regards to racing for the rest of the season. Should I just concentrate on the du, and just do a tri when weather is perfect? Or continue to try the tris?
PS - I didn't even realize until Ann pointed this out, this wkend is exactly the 1yr anniversary of last yr's Worlds. So I'm happy - at least I finished my race this wkend, despite the weather, and the frozen shoulder. Du results not too bad either.
