Swim
Comments: Towards the end of lap 4 (or 8 lengths), I swallowed some of the wake from the person in the next lane. This disrupted my rhythm somewhat for the last 100m. 7:25 is an estimate. I looked at my watch after getting out of the pool and saw 7:31 elapsed time. What would you do differently?: I was happy to beat 7:30, but I know I'm capable of closer to 7 minutes. Not swallow the wake :) and train a little harder to achieve faster pace. Transition 1
Comments: I had the goggles & swim cap off by the time I got to my bike. The rain caused me use a garbage bag to keep my stuff dry. Dried hair a bit with towel. Got shoes, socks, shirt, shorts on quickly. Grabbed a swig of Gatorade. What would you do differently?: By the time I looked at my watch (on southbound 632), I was at 12:31 elapsed time. My transition was under 5 minutes, but could definitely improve. Better weather would have helped. Bike
Comments: I was happy with how I biked. In training, I paced myself to average 12 mph over 11 miles. I remember looking at my watch towards the end of the bike and seeing 1hr, 7 minutes elapsed time. Factoring transition time from the swim, about a 55 minute bike ride. My bike is a 21-speed Trek mountain bike. What would you do differently?: More road course training, more stationary bike training to achieve faster pace. Not get chafed by my warped seat cover :( Transition 2
Comments: Had a little trouble finding my area because 2 guys were standing at the rack. This transition took me less than 2 minutes. What would you do differently?: Mark my bike rack location with colorful towel! Run
Comments: The only way to beat 1h 38min (remember at 1h 07min, I was still on the bike) I must have run the 5K in LESS than 35 minutes, which is a SHOCK to me, because I wasn't doing that in training. What would you do differently?: NOTHING. I was absolutely stoked with anything CLOSE to 30 minutes. Post race
Warm down: Walk, drink water. Breathe to get heart rate down. Eat fruit. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inexperience, training to finish vs. training to "do well", weather (transition set-up) Event comments: Rain caused minor delays. Splits and transition times would be nice, but I know I could improve on everything. I finished literally just under 1:38 (1:37:59.7), and I am still surprised. Last updated: 2009-06-28 12:00 AM

Woke up just before 4:30 a.m. and ate toast & jelly. Grabbed my gear and a granola bar. Drove from the house (Lake Linganore) to the park. Arrived at the park around 5:30 a.m. Set up transition area, accounting for light rain.
Got bike tires inflated/pressure equalized before race. With an estimated swim start at 9 a.m., I had plenty of time to watch swimmers transition, bikers transition, and people finish. I spent most of the time trying not to waste energy being nervous. Rain started/stopped several times while waiting. It was not raining once I got into the pool for my swim.
