Swim
Comments: Navigation was not an issue because of the narrow canal. Nerves were not an issue because the canal was only about 4 feet deep the whole way. Was nice being able to breath left had see my wife pushing the stroller, and cheering me on. What would you do differently?: not much. I felt really good about the swim. Transition 1
Comments: Slow moving in transition. I need to practice the transition more so that I don't have to think through it. The transition zone was much bigger than my first triathlon so that could account for some of the added time. What would you do differently?: Get a tri-suit, so I don't have to worry about putting on a shirt. Don't take time to drink at the bike. Figure out a way to attach my shoes to the bike. Bike
Comments: The course was pretty good on the first lap. 2nd lap was really congested. Still ridin "Clyde" my +30lb steel steed. 1992 Specialized Hardrock. This race I had some Profile Design aerobars mounted. I don't think I gained much aero advantage, but I was a lot more comfortable than sitting upright with the mountain bike bars. What would you do differently?: Back off the bike a little, and save my legs for the run. Transition 2
Comments: As I was racking my bike. I somehow got my shoulder into the cross bar and couldn't get my bike racked because I was moving the bar. Once I caught my breath, I figured out what was going on and got settled. I was really tired at this point but didn't really realize until after the race, because I was so jazzed up. What would you do differently?: stay behind the bike as it's racked. Just lift the seat like the pros do it. Run
Comments: I felt really good for the 2.5 miles. Then I bonked on the second lap. I had to stop and walk several times which is something I never do on the run. My legs were hurting so much. It hurt to run slower than about 7:30 pace, so I ended up basically going 2mins run 30sec walk for pretty much all of mile 4 and 5. Then I got back into a groove for the last mile. What would you do differently?: More long runs in my training program. I just felt like my endurance wasn't there. Probably should have taken 1 more Gel while on the bike. Post race
Warm down: After getting re-hydrated, I jumped in the canal to cool off. Once I felt comfortable again. I re-united with the family and began stretching the legs, focusing on the quads. Quads starting cramping about 15-20 mins after I got out of the canal (20-25 mins after finishing). I tried more stretching. Then my wife popped out the Ibuprofen she had remembered to bring (she's awesome) 800mg and 10 mins later the cramping was gone and I was able to walk/jog around enough to start working out the soreness. What limited your ability to perform faster: I need to build my endurance. I just ran out of gas on that run. Event comments: I beat my goal time of 2:45 by just over 4 mins. Can't complain about that. I wish my run had been better, but I did have a good bike. Last updated: 2009-07-10 12:00 AM

Set up my transition area. Jogged all the entry exit routes to get familiar. Met back up with the wife and kids, to walk to the swim start.
Jogged around the transition area, and did some stretching. Swam about 2mins to warm up before my wave took off. Almost missed my wave though cause I was the last number to go in my wave.
