Swim
Comments: Best swim since I started doing triathlons. Open water start with about 125 people in my wave. Got out hard taking 6 strokes before a breath for the first 50 yards to get away from the mass of people. Put myself in a little oxygen debt, and started breathing more often. I was passing the people in the 0-34 wave who started 3 minutes ahead by the 200 yards into the swim. Probably ended up passing about 50% of the wave 1 swimmers. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 1
Comments: The cold weather slowed everything down. Wetsuit stuck a little, but the bigger challenge was getting my feet into the shoes with numb feet. What would you do differently?: Improve mounting and getting into shoes. Bike
Comments: I love this bike course. It short and challenging. It truly isn't a beginner bike course. These are steep and one of them is long, and your legs will burn. I rode in the small chain ring almost the entire way because I don't have the power to mash the big ring efficiently. I think this help keep the legs fresh and powerful for the hills. What would you do differently?: Bike long steep hills to exhaustion prior to the race. Transition 2
Comments: My feet were frozen and I couldn't feel them. I wouldn't even know if my shoes were on if I wasn't looking down. What would you do differently?: Need to improve dismounting the bike in one motion. Run
Comments: First mile is uphill and second mile downhill, the typical out and back design. The second mile is at least a minute faster than the first. I split 6:45, 5:31. What would you do differently?: Take off my skirt and run like a man. My first mile was too slow. Perhaps because there wasn't many others around or I got to complacent. Nonetheless, I ran the first mile more like a 10 mile race vs. 2 mile. I ran faster in mile 2, but I had given up too much time. I should be able to run at least 30-45 seconds faster next year... Everything packed in the car and bike racked the day before the race. Awake at 4:00am, shower, ate 1/2 bagel with peanut butter, drank coffee, and finally a Red Bull (1 hour prior to race start).
