Swim
Comments: I had a good swim...for me. The start went from the beach kind of parallel to shore so when the horn blew I ran a good 50m down the shoreline before diving in...anything to shorten the swim :) I was mostly alone to the first turn where I merged with the rest of the pack. Shortly after I happened to find one guy who was swimming at just the right speed and I started drafting off of his side. I put him on the right of me and tried to keep my head even with his hip so that I could see him with every breath and adjust my position. This worked well and I was able to relax and cruise along with him for probably 800m. What I found as useful as the actual draft was that I had something to occupy my mind while swimming...every stroke I was focused on holding position without bumping him or falling off the draft. When I swim alone the only thing I have to think about is stroking and how much more I have to go. Drafting gave me something to do. My goal for this season was to be a solid mid-pack swimmer. I was 27/72 (top 38%) in my AG and 135/474 (top 29%) overall men so I'm happy with my performance. What would you do differently?: I felt as good as I have in any swim this season so it's really just a matter of working on technique and efficiency over the winter. Transition 1
Comments: I lost the draft for the last ~400m and I was a bit tired when I hit shore. My HR was way up as I ran up the hill and into T1. As usual I didn't get my wetsuit off over my feet as smoothly as I would have liked. What would you do differently?: Work on getting out of that damn wetsuit faster! Bike
Comments: I wasn't very happy with my ride...seemed like everyone and their grandmother passed me even though I kept a steady low-level burn going in my quads. I guess I could have pushed harder but my typical strategy is to make sure I'm fresh for the run so I can finish strong...which I did. My goal for this season was to be a top 25% biker. I was 35/72 (top 49%) in my AG and 205/474 (top 43%) overall men so I wasn't anywhere near my goal but to be fair I have developed an overall pacing strategy that has me holding back on the bike so I can run strong. It still seems like I should be able to ride better and still have a solid run. What would you do differently?: Definitely gotta work on my biking for next season. I know it's mostly about the engine, but I really want a better machine to ride. I just bought a sweet set of 58mm carbon race wheels yesterday that should help next season and I plan to have a professional fit done over the winter. Transition 2
Comments: Good quick transition...everything went smooth. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Very good run. I had my first victim 200m out of T2 and just kept eating people up the whole way. I initially started counting how many people I had passed but realized that I was losing focus on what was important. I'd see the next person ahead of me and zone in on him. What I should be doing is concentrating on running my own race. I know I'm faster than 99% of the people out there on the run so if I just focus on doing my own thing the passes will come. By the first water station and had stopped counting and just settled into my groove. I couldn't completely ignore the guys in front of me but I didn't make a point of running them down. There was this one guy that I saw about 800m ahead with 2 miles to go...I wasn't gaining on him nearly as fast as everyone else but after stalking him for nearly 2 miles I finally caught and passed him on the final uphill of the race, just before making the turn for home. I was a little bummed when I saw how close I was to going under 40min but I was happy having the 11th fastest run of the day. My goal for this season was to be a top 10% runner. I was 2/72 (top 3%) in my AG and 11/474 (top 2%) overall men so I'm very happy with my performance. Wondering how much I'd drop if I went harder o the bike but it feels so good to pass everyone on the run and feel strong from start to end. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: The usual...stagger through the chute, try not to fall down, get lots of water and take a good 15min to pull myself together. I know I really should do some warm-down jogging but moving is the last thin on my mind when I finish a race. What limited your ability to perform faster: My ride was average at best. Event comments: A well organized race with a very nice course...especially the run course. There are a few minor things they could do to improve the run course (mile markers and that set of timing mats just before the finish) but overall they did a great job of putting together a fun and safe race. Alarm roused me out of bed at 4:15am for breakfast...2 cinnamon begals, a bananna, and 16oz of water, then back to sleep for a while. Wake-up call at 5:30. Packed my gear, checked out and headed for the race site.
I sipped on water through the morning. 1 hour before the start I took 4 Endurolytes, 2 Endurox Excel tabs, and 200mg of caffeine.
I had 2 bottles for the ride, both with 2 Endurolyte caps (it was going to be cool and overcast) and one with an additional 200mg of caffeine.
~5 mile ride...damn I felt slow. When I turned around I realized that I had been on a gradual but steady uphill for the last mile so I felt a little better. ~1 mile run...felt good. A few 100 meters swimming with the wetsuit on just before the start...felt good.
